Good/Bad ships to fly in multiples or squadrons

Recommended Posts

With the upcoming epic wing rules, which ships you feel are good to deploy in formation (any size)? Which will probably shine either as wingmates for a named pilot or simply as generics?

And which ships you feel will hardly ever be flown in groups?

This are the previewed wing's card reveled so far:
star_wars_x-wing_second_edition_epic_bat

So, even if it's not 100% confirmed, we can safely assume:
- Wings are for small base ships.
- Wings have a wing leader and 2 - 5 wingmates.
- Wings must be composed of the same ship type.
- Some special cards allow exceptions: you can see Imperial and FO ones. For empire, you can give both TIE advanced types wingleaders some TIE fighters wingmates.

I guess there will be 3 main classes of wing uses:

- Acewing: a named wingleader with a coterie of generics for wingmates.
- Namewing: several named pilots, maybe some generics to eat damage.
- Gruntwing: full generics wingleader and mates.

Look to the films for the most obvious answer, but anything that is cheap (under 30 points) would be a decent option to spam. Quantity has a quality all it's own.

Personally, I'd like to see fleets of Quadjumpers clogging the board. They'd be T-beaming fools left and right!

I'm curios to see how a squad of starvipers are going to barrel roll.  Does the leader move and then barrel roll and then everyone falls into position?  Will there not be any pre-ordained squads that allow them?  Will Guri be able to lead a squad with 2 fang fighters?

I'll be in a meeting during the reveal tomorrow so I'm counting on the forums to let us know.

Raiders. I like massed Raiders, flying in groups to cover one another's flanks. Angry Space Triangles are best.

I would lol pretty tremendously at a wing of 6 Quads! Flying 3 independently is bad enough; 6 might be so bad it’s good.

In all seriousness though, I could see TIE/sf wings being pretty good. Or Silencer wings...

(I would also lol at a wing of Resistance Transports. Back-back-it-up!)

4 Arcs are a big no.

Bwings are kinda boring.

5 ints 5 strikers - a lot of ppl have said they didn't turn out well.

4 gunboats - also eh.

I don't expect 5 Jedi with CLT to be that good, though I might be mistaken.

Played 3 Ewing's, decently fun.

4B+Attshuttle is decently strong, just again, kinda boring.

Multiples but not formation tool: TIE/sf.  The strength of the TIE/sf is the amazing killboxing.  Fly past stuff, still get actions, shoot with lots of ships.  Formation tool kinda ruins that.  However, running Quickdraw in with maybe 2 minions might be strong.  The minions can help QD lose damage more slowly, and maybe get a few extra attacks in.  Once you're engaged and past an enemy alpha strike, maybe break up the formation.

That's the real kicker here. If all ship in a wings move exactly like the leader, imagine what kind of shenanigans you can do!

My wing of tie-advanced is led by Ved Foslo, they can all switch their maneuver and do hard 1. Or a wing of firespray led by boba with Slave 1 can decide where to go whenver.

Can a wing of striker with duchess decide to forgo aileron at will?

Can a wing of phantom led by echo decloak all over the place?

So many questions!?!

So here is my take on a few ships:

Imperial:

TIE fighters: heavy use in wings of any type, from Vader & bodyguards to one-dial Inferno Squadron

TIE Advanced: I doubt they'll see much play except as aces escorted by fighters.

Phantoms: Maybe... I would assume many will prefer to fly them loose

Interceptors: Besides Soontir and bodyguards, I feel they will still not be used much.

Strikers: Will probably be flown in wings a lot, in all 3 classes.

Bombers: Jonus and friends will probably be flown a lot, maybe gruntwing too...

Rebel alliance:

T65 Xwings: besides some thematic red squadron, dont think will be flown much. Hope I'm wrong.

Z95s: I can see Cracken and friends all sporting cluster missiles as a thing.

Awings: probably flown a lot in wings, specially with Jake.

Bwings: expensive wing... could be awesome though, both named and generics.

I feel like a squadron of fangs is going to be extremely scary to see in the board.

A squadron of Z-95s on the other hand is just funny.

A squadron of Z-95s will become even funnier if you can give them all Deadman Switches...  And fly 12 of them into the path of a huge ship.

So, after watching yesterday stream, I guess having wingleaders with high initiative and repositioning capabilities (either because ships ability or upgrade card) will be most  valuable. Couple that with those whose chassis have cheap generics, preferabily with some shields to spread the damage around, and we could predict good wings.

Interceptor wings led by Soontir will certainly be a thing. Vader with academy pilots too.
