Enhanced Lightsaber

Recommended Posts

Wanted to share an idea I'm working on to make lightsabers more life-like. This uses a LEGO lightsaber as a sort of sheath over the model's blade. I've seen people replace the model's blade with the LEGO part before. However, what I like about this is it doesn't involve clipping the model's off so you always have the option to take it off. The thicker and harder plastic also prevents the flexy FFG blade mold. Also, I like how you can see the FFG mold inside. I paint this white to be the saber core, and the LEGO color creates the colored saber light (the core set cover you can see how lightsabers have the whitish core). If you use just the LEGO you have the same effect of the FFG mold of solid color saber.

This does involve some machinery. First I drilled out the LEGO .063" DIA about .8" deep (the length of the FFG mold). The LEGO is about 1.25" so clip it just above where the drill is, you can see through the transparent plastic. I find the OD of the LEGO is still too thick and a little cartoony so I use a belt sander to turn it down a bit. Make sure you don't break through the thin wall. Paint the model's saber white. Slip modified cover over. Again, if you don't like it you can remove it, don't have to be as committed as trying a simple replace method.

Also, anyone know a better way of getting pictures on here? I'm having a hard time getting the picture uploaded from size so I have to use a compressed PDF.

I use Imgur and it’s very simple.  It shouldn’t be difficult to figure out but let me know if you have trouble.

I like this idea a lot.  It’s something FFG should consider making themselves as a premium product once there are a few more lightsabers in the game.  The LEGO piece is a bit bulky and probably to solidly colored to get the best effect.  But if you had a thinner piece that let the light of the painted saber show through with just a bit of tint and then have sort of an aura around it, this might be brilliant.
