German Nationals

Recommended Posts

Just a few impressions from the german nationals. We had 47 players, 4 SSDs joined the fray. Right now the top 9 players are playing a top8 swiss cut (3 matches). Tokra took the inofficial king of swiss title. I had a good run with Riekan Aces MSU for 6th after swiss. But i had to drop and head home to my three younglings. So the 9th place had the opportunity to take my seat in the cut.

I'll see, if my bothans can bring on any further information. I know for sure one SSD is in the cut. List consists of "Small" SSD, Demolisher plus two Gozanti. But i have no information about upgrades or even Commander (wild guess: Jerry).

I was there yesterday as well! Great, relaxed atmosphere.

More notes on the SSD‘s impact: all of them were in Top 17 and in 16 games total (4 SSDs in 4 rounds of games) only killed 3 times!

Out of curiosity where did the SSD place?

A little Meta Breakdown:

We were 47 player. 4 rounds with a cut for top 8. And a fresh 3 rounds swiss on second day for the tops.

There were 4 SSD lists.
Total matches with SSD were 14 (two had a bye in the first round).
3 SSD were killed on the first day, non on the second (there was one SSD in the top 8 cut).
The 4th SSD was place 17, one in the top 8 cut, the remaining two somewhere in between.

The 8th best Rebel player was 20th place.
Top 8 were 3 rebels 5 imperials. But because one rebel player could not stay for the second day, another imperial player joined the top 8.

The 3 rounds of swiss were all really close. In the first two rounds, we had not a single 8 or higher game. All 8 games until than were 6-5 or 7-4. In the last round were two 8-2 matches. The other two were 6-5 and 7-4.
As @NewGandhi already said, first 3 all had 19 points. And the MOV was really close.

The 4th, with the 18 points, did not loose a single game in both days. But 3 times 6-5 is just not enough to win.
In the top4 were in the end 3 times Sloane and one lonely Rieekan.
The most funny game was a won (6-5) with a MOV of -35 😨. The opponent was tabled but had, thanks to victory tokens, 435 points. Resulting in a 6-5 with a MOV of 0.

I had to play against two SSD lists on the two days (one in swiss, one in cut).
First one was SSD (with Piett, Ravager, Kallus, Quad laser turrets, and some other, that did not bother for squadrons) with two Comms-Gozanti and Rogues (3x Agressor, Bossk, Firespray). I just killed the Squadrons and the Gozanti (139 points…) and lost one squadron (Rhymer..).

Second one (in the cut), was a nice version with Command SSD, 2x Gozanti and a Demo (5 activations). But no squadrons, and the SSD was really weak equipped, because of the missing points. No Kallus, no Quad laser, no titel, but it had Palpatine and Brunson.
This one was really nice and interesting. I just send in the squadrons over and over again. I was able to strip both Redirect with the first attack round (lucky). After this i went directly through the front and pushed it to 14 damage on turn 5. At this point we skipped the last turn. I could not destroy it (it still had both brace and both Contain), and he could not repair back to prevent the half point loss.

Who said again that squadrons aces are dead with the SSD`? 😁

And a good hint (regarding my insane stupid, really stupid, mistake i made in the last game).
If you want to measure the distance, how far a squadron can go for attacks (range 5 plus a bit), do NOT use the range 4 ruler for this. It might be that you are in attack range….
This mistakes cost me the game. I lost 3 aces because of it.

Thanks for the report.  Given all the Aces and SquadBalls (Reikaan/Sloane), were any of the SSDs running the Annihilator + Kallus + other stacked anti-squad stuff?  If so, could they just not cut the squadrons down fast enough?

Annihilator is bad (imo). It is not the answer against squadrons or aces. The reroll is not helping you to get the damage that you need.
If you want to kill them, you need Ravager, Kallus, H9, Quad Laser.
And if you really badly want to kill them, you add Quad Turbolaser as well. But this means you need the Assault, and are sinking quite a few points into it. Weakening yourself against other lists.

I definitely agree that Ravager+linked trubolaser tower+H9+Kallus is the way to delete a squadron. However Annihilatetor can do some nice things on a Kallus+Palpatine+quad laser turrets aces will really burn though their token really fast and Then Annihilatetor can help with very consistent 2+ damage.  My biggest issue is its cost and how inflexible it is as it only helps if there are squadrons.

Look at it this way: Kallus, Annihilator, and QLT together is 16 points. You're investing essentially 2 TIEs to basically delete squadrons. H9s and Palp aren't squad-specific upgrades, and so not something I really account for. They're just as worthwhile against ships as squads.

Ravager adding a single die with a token is just not something that has impressed me. I have a hard time justifying not repairing on the SSD given that means 3 shields, so I can't say I've ever felt the need to use confire commands. I suppose I could feed it tokens, but it's still a single die. I've seen Annihilator's reroll do an entire game's worth of Ravager damage in a single anti-squad volley. The thing's firepower is impressive in its own right. I'd much rather just bring along an IO than Ravager if I need to push more damage, though that starts to get tough on the officer slot.

I see your point. 16 points to chew through a good chunk of squadrons is a good investment for the points and engineering commands are very useful and Ravager I only find works when you get to add 2 dice.

But as you said, Annihilator is only against squadrons. Ravager work as well against ships, and is cheaper.
And these two extra dice can as well do a lot. It means 2 blue + 1 black (Kallus) + 2 black (CF), while you can turn the one blue always to a ACC with H9. Or even on long range (if you use the big one…). 1 Red + 2 red against generic or 3 of any color against uniques. And also a good chance for the ACC with H9. this one is not so great against a full squadron flak, but it is great to take out on by one. As long as you have CF Commands (i assume this will be the bigger problem in later turns).

Back to the National ("Grand") Championship.
I was really expecting more SSD lists. 4 were quite a low number, after all this hype 😏. And all 4 in the top 17 (with 47) players, is really not a bad result.

On the other hand, i saw many lists that were not prepared to fight against an SSD at all (and they went down REALLY hard).
Worst match, that i saw, was with imperial MSU. Two GSD and a Raider were charging the SSD. In the Front. Before he activated… These 3 ships didn't see another turn. They just were in medium range in the front from the SSD. I don't know if the player didn't know what Gunnery Team is, or that the SSD has this many dice.
Other lists were adjusted for the SSD (like mine: Rhymer rebirth!).

I hope that i can get the Lists this week. But because of the Euros ("Continentals…"), i will have no time for it.

Would be nice a new player to Armada, am enjoying it very much, but after Euros, would you be so kind as to share a little insight to your list building.

Would be nice to know your thought process.

Thx

Go big or go home I guess.

It's basically why I always just build a list for just my objectives.  And then include a 77 or 85 pt Demo, to make sure I get it.  (IE., my '85 pt bid for 2nd player')

I mean, that 378 bid...geeeez.  That's a comms net GR75 with Hondo.  You gotta be desperate for 1st to need it that badly.  And then you are playing your opponent's objectives, anyway...

The mind boggles!

Was there too!
Once again (previously at Postdam regios 2 years ago) German Armada community show their great hospitality and passion for the game. End up at 13th place (which was great success for me as I haven't play on big tournament in a looong time and got experimental list). First day was awesome (lots of players, lots of fun and- I my case- very bloody battles) but top8 cut was unbeliveble! Such even (top 3 had  only 19VP each and MoV decided) and exciting!

Thanks again for the TOs and participants- thats the tournament to remember!

See some of You very soon in Kraków!

It's a search & destroy list, you gotta go first or have a huge disadvantage. I had a Raddus list with 376 bid and always want to have the choice. One more Gozanti oder 2 squads won't change the game for me. Going for 2nd player would.
