New Unit Upgrade Packs!

Recommended Posts

Anyone notice that each expansion pack comes with a load of Surge tokens. Those tokens cannot be taken as an action, they have to be given.

So it looks like one of each of the faction’s Personnel slot minis will have that ability to hand those out.

Ok, double posting, but hold on a sec, why the heck did FFG not add this to the In-Flight Report? It’s more interesting and ground breaking imho.

I’m thinking just 1/each unless you really want more of the same new heavies out in the field. I’m probably 2 for Rebels so I can get that dlt20 out there. The empire and clones are just 1 for me most likely. Maybe a second clone to jump start my new army.

No clue.... but I had the feeling something was coming when their big cool things were all 2020.

Maybe they wanted to concentrate mainly on the Clone Wars stuff? It is a bit strange.

Simple really they wanted to surprise us fans

That by itself might shake up the meta quite a bit.

Some Medical Droids + Vader+ Force Guidance + New Ways to Motivate Them + 2 x Royal Guard with Tenacity, Tactical 1 and Environmental Gear = sexy times

Definitely some interesting potential with that training upgrade, Offensive (Tactics, maybe). Could be good combined with Dauntless or Compel to get a move and an aim token in exchange for one suppression token.

As a rebel player, would love to see a mirror upgrade, Defensive Tactics, that would grant Agile 1.

So that is four of the five missing products on the list. My guess for the last is something comparable to 3P0/R2 we are getting this month. Most likely a bounty hunter since that is really the only option I can think of that would go both CIS and Empire.................... unless its papa pap.

Lots of options now for Clone Wars, wonder how the battle droids will do with that sniper weapon. I also like how the units can do double duty and be run as a basic unit.

Aim Tokens might be even better for rebels. There are ways to get dodge tokens via command cards and such. A lot of units with black dice like the new Luke with his diesengage, Wookies, Commandos, Tauntauns and such really like free aim tokens.

Yeah noticed that too. My guess is the specialist, which gives some kind of slot, but also has a free action that is giving out surge tokens.

I thought there were 6 in total, so there are 2 left?

If there is only one left, I hope it’s Hondo Ohnaka. I can see him in every faction, but CIS.

Oh, good call on the wookies. I was picturing Sabine with a permanent dodge token, but that aim might be solid with more rebel options like you were saying. Pathfinders with Dauntless came to mind but Tauntauns will make use of Tactical easily too.

These are, like the specialists, another must buy product - especially for a budget.

The way I see if you get into the game, like I have, with limited funds, buying a starter, Stormtrooper expansion, specialists, and these packs you can build 4 squads of of stormtroopers, with personnel upgrades from these packs.

Sure, the cost is not having that extra stormtrooper miniature in a squad, but adding in whole other unit seems a good choice.

This also seems to put the nail in the coffin for a ‘sandtrooper’ expansion.   We are getting those models.  Like many on here, I've  posted, fairly often, about  how it would be a good idea to release a heavy-upgrade specialist pack.   This is it right here.

This pack does save me some money on buying a second clone wars starter..  I was going to do it to get another  Grievous model, and to get a playable force, corps wise,  but I just don't see a need as much.   The second Grievous model would be nice, but I don't think I need that many rulers, tokens, and all.   (I mean I'll get more when the First Order and Resistance starter comes out next year 😜)

From a modelling standpoint, the Rebel trooper upgrade is phenomenal.   Adding in all the aliens, helps diversify.  The Theelin alone is making me want this pack - and I don't even play rebels.

These options, make for more diverse squads visually, and allow me to build up a viable secondary rebel army without so many duplicates.  I think my two duros will be painted like brothers, and I'm going to mix and match units with this pack.

This is a great expansion, and I hope to see more along this line in the future.

Possibly, also possible it’s just to help get you a bunch of them ahead of the card pack so you can use aggressive tactics and have the right tokens without buying prequel stuff.

Yeah, its odd that this is out less than a week after the report, comes out before the stuff they talked about, and yet wasn't mentioned at all.  This would seem to have a broader appeal to both current and new fans as well as those that will be sticking to GCW factions only.  Weird.

I love these except the Stormtroopers. I don't like that they are Tatooine Stormies. To me it will look odd to have 1 Tatooine stormtrooper in a regular unit and there are not enough to make them their own squad with one box. I really like it besides that little gripe.

You mean, much like we have now, with our Stormtrooper leader wearing the pauldron worn by Sandtroopers and the DLT trooper wearing the sandtrooper backpack?

So.. looking at these stormtroopers some more, I think there is a possibility that the backpacks are like those found on the Jedha stormtroopers, instead of what we saw in Tatooine.

Edit: I wonder if there is a way to even make the backpacks the stormies come with optional?   It’s a pipe dream, but having if they could be left off, you have one more method of customizing.

Makes me wonder what the other two sku’s are that haven’t been revealed yet and if they’re going to be out by Christmas too.

Maybe when they do Stormtrooper sprues that'll be an option? At the moment I'm waiting for sprue before I get more stormtroopers or Rebel troopers for *fingers crossed* more customisation.

Awwwwwwwwwwwww man I hope you are right. It was a quick view from a friend's phone and since nobody was talking about it I was not 100% sure it was real. Apparently it is gone now so fingers crossed. Would also mean we get something for CIS/Empire AND a operative for all the factions........... man I love Hondo.

On a side note, I am also in the "why do this so soon after Gen Con and not at Gen Con?" camp. Seems very weird, especially since I was a bit upset that Clone Wars was going months with no expansion (not anymore!!). Seems like X-Wing is the only one FF does not do weird thing for.

I like them, but it's making me regret my basing strategy. I base my squads with common bases, but differing between squads, so it's easy to tell the squads apart on the table, but means the whole army has a variety of base finishes. Makes it hard to mix & match ... now I get an expansion that encourages mixing and matching.

First world problems.

Their role will be similar to new "experienced" Corps like Vets and Shoretroopers. Unlikely to make them your entire army except for thematic builds, but for a few extra points you can get a unit with slightly more kick - they have Courage 2 (harder to suppress), gain surge tokens for doing absolutely nothing (not even moves or orders, they just get them at the start of a turn) which allied clones can spend if they don't need them (thanks Clone Trooper rules!) and you can combo them with Training upgrades now, and with Courage 2 they might actually be viable with Duck and Cover. Or just slap on Overwatch, Endurance or the new Offensive [Tactics].

I personally expect we will see a batch of Upgrade expansions for more Corps units, but probably not until later next year. I'm more interested in other possibly unit Upgrade expansions - like maybe for Heavy units or our vanilla Special Forces.

I understand this Hawk, I have done the same thing. What I did with the specialist packs is make one of each specialist match the base of one of my corps units. I will likely do the same thing for a set of these. I guess the only concern with these sets as they each have 2 personnel and 2 heavy upgrades, so you could potentially run one of each in a unit. So, I guess a decision has to be made whether you would ever do so and decided if you will match one of each to a particular corps unit or not.

Of course, getting multiple of each set sort of helps eliminate the problem :D

New guns are cool, but without a way to make it appealing to run different unit configs its going to be annoying to buy the box multiple times for the one model you want to use.

That’s kinda the norm for the broader hobby. Like how games that use squads of 10 sell packs of 3 minis.

Not necessarily.  We know the card pack will have upgrades that give surges (a force power and a command one IIRC), but they don't appear to contain cardboard, so the boatload of surges may just be to give Rebel/Imp players a way to pick up surge tokens without going out of faction or getting a second core.  then again, the specialist might also do this just to kind of justify it, but I doubt the specialist gives like the six or so  int eh pack.

For my specialist I put them on the FFG ”Premium” bases, to alleviate the matching base problem.

I’m planning on doing what you guy described with my bases for each squad. Did you have an overall theme like forest, use rocks for one squad and the logs for another? Or are they completely unique for each squad mixing several themes?

For my Specialist I based them on the FFG premium bases.

For the new packs matching  one to each squad would work unless you use them by themselves. Multiples it may need to be.
