Isn't anyone else gobsmacked at the price of the new large ships?

The price increase isn't really due to tariffs. 10% of $50 is only $5, plus FFG doesn't isn't paying their manufacturers anywhere near what they are charging us, so assuming the Onager model is roughly equivalent to an ISD in production cost the tariffs should probably only add 2 or 3 dollars to the cost, not 10.

This is just prices going up because prices go up. It's probably made worse because FFG probably sees Armada less as a game that attracts new players nowadays, and almost nothing is too expensive for deeply enfranchised players.

Here's the thing though.  Lets say tariffs go up by 10%.  You know what doesn't go up in price?  Established products like previous expansions.  ISDs would still be sold at $50, but FFG would take a hit on them as they'd be paying a $5 tariff per item.  So when introducing new expansions, they up the price to not only cover the tariff on the new item, but also on the old ones that they can't raise the price of.

I was told about a change in prices due to license stuff.

Not sure how much true is behind that.

As a customer I prefer to get that info publicly rather than at the corridors. I mean, technically could just be a way to use a scapegoat. Let's get the chance to hear what the goat have to say.

Yes but you are assuming FFG reprints expansions, which they clearly don't.

Considering how the Onager is going to be a specialist and the Star Hawk being what will probably be a huge point sink, I can't see needing more than one each at first at least (admittedly multiple Star Hawks in sector fleet might be fun). Plus with how slow armada releases have been lately the price point is far less than what I've spent on Legion this year or would have spent if I had decided to keep up with X-wing. Really isn't that bad for one offs.

Does that matter?  I'd have thought it was the detail that cost, not the raw material.  Now I imagine it does have more detail than the ISD, but that much?

Regardless, I assume there's a formula that means it does makes sense from FFG's point of view, but what about customers?  Aren't people put off buying it at that price?  For me this wave may be my first pass.

I agree. I was surprised by the price of both ships considering the respective sizes. The only ships I don't own multiples of are the SSD and the Profundity (just haven't gotten around to picking up a 2nd yet) and while I'll definitely buy these, because I'm an addict, they are likely an individual buy for me. At $50 the star hawk would have probably been a 3 for me; same for the Onager at $40. Probably at least an okay chance that I see both at some point priced well enough for me to grab a 2nd one though. I still think they are worth buying at the price they are, just wouldn't buy as many of each ship is all.

I had a little search around the UK online stores that do Armada

Darksphere, Chaos Cards, Magic Madhouse, Darkstar so far have them, but the cheapest preorder I have found is

The Outpost, Sheffield.

https://www.the-outpost.co.uk/product/star-wars-armada-nadiri-starhawk/   £54.95

https://www.the-outpost.co.uk/product/star-wars-armada-onager-class-star-destroyer/    £43.95

There is upcoming economic uncertanty, what with Trump's trade war(s), Borris about to crash us out of the EU and the Pound weak & ready to plummet.

So I nailed my wallet to the mast and preordered one of each for £98.90 with free UK shipping as the order total is over £75.

Disclaimer prices can change, yada yada yada...

EDIT: 15 Aug. Prices have now changed. £59.99 and £45.99

I think they've underestimated the UK RRP (others seem to be going with £75 not £70), but that's still over 20% off.

Hmm. Maybe I do want to pre-order a Starhawk now...

That's pretty tempting, thanks for doing the legwork!

Just noticed the card count too and they are both a little lower for the new expansions, 9 vs 12+ for previous large expansions..

Even without tarrifs there is always inflation and we have not seen too much of an effect from inflation on Armada.  X-Wing 2.0 saw a price jump for everything with very similar ship sculpts.  A price rise over time is expected.  Based on the size and the fact that its command 4 I can't see needing more than 1 Starhawk.  The Onager may fit 2 in a list but it seems like it will be a tricky mechanic and probably not the best use of list points to have 2.  I will get 1 of each, day of release, if I decide there would be some reason to have more than one of either I will just wait for a price drop on-line or a big sale.

As others have said, our releases are few and far between.  Amortize the cost out over time and this is a very cheap game to keep current in compared to others.  I also play Legion as a Rebel only and the rate of release for expansions there is insane, sometimes I barely have time to try out the newest release before something new comes along.  I am a completionist with Armada and it is far far cheaper than being single faction in Legion.  Plus no painting (unless you want to).  Legion is a fun game but Armada is an amazing game and well worth my investment.

Honestly, while it is a big price bump over the ISD, I will still get at least 2 of each, probably 3 of the Starhawks.

Same. Now that sector fleet battles are a thing, and it's not just a "house rule" a lot of players  locally are trying bigger formats and finding out it was the way Armada was meant to be played. Also, we hope to see you soon mate. (though this week's roster is looking a little weak).

I'm heading off to the Caribbean for the next two weekends, so I won't be able to make it out that way for a few weeks. Hopefully I will be able to get in some quality list building time, for a sector fleet! I think I can make the Thrawn regenerator work with the SSD! Really looking forward to try

Well if Sector Fleet battles become a regular thing here I will probably have to back off of my only one of each of the new expansions...  A thematic Battle of Jakku game would be fun.

I can see you don't play X-Wing much :D

Seriously, our B-Wing now has folding wings, a rotating cockpit, and the whole thing rotates on its peg. All X-Wings have moving foils. Detail on the Y-Wing is much crisper and I think all ships now have engine glow by default. Detail on all large ships has improved tremendously and the paint jobs are much much more vivid and crisp than before.

Some of the more recent sculpts didn't really change, but they didn't really need to. Most things have seen significant improvement, at least in paint quality. But I really think they raised the price for three reasons: 1) because the game's been out for 7 years and inflation happens 2) because the sculpt and paint quality are substantially improved 3) because there's more content per pack in terms of cardboard, and most of the expensive work goes into playtesting and balancing those things (especially now that things aren't just one-and-done because fixing bad prices is a thing).

Price change was very reasonable IMO. Especially because things like the Decimator and Ghost got improved and didn't even get a price change at all (2.0 Ghost is going for $50 with a docking shuttle).

Well that's good, I want people to keep buying into the game, and I'm worried fewer people will at that price (especially people who are also into other games, eg X-Wing).

I do kind of wish there was a cheaper entry price for Armada. The core set is pretty pricey as an initial buy-in. But once you put down your initial investment, your cost tends to level out.

One of the reasons I enjoy Armada over X-Wing is the slower pace of expansions. X-Wing is cheaper, sure, but there is just so MUCH X-Wing that it feels overwhelming. Its also why I struggled with games like Netrunner (which I still adore). I just couldn't keep up with the pace of expansions.

I think we are seeing the upper limits of what FFG is going to price out for Armada. You really can't go much higher than this without either greatly increasing the model quality or size, or just making something so big and silly that it has no real practical value at that point.

The SSD rightfully carries its hype. These? Not so certain.

Theyre very expensive and looking like will be only a buy one for many at that price point.

Also so kudos to the team for making cool products but FYI I’m pretty sure the plastic comes out to a few cents literally. Even with the moulding. The paint job even with some mass assembly techniques is what is suspect is costly in labor costs.
