Relationship card ideas

Recommended Posts

I couldn't wait for the Lurker release or a Strange Eons update to get the ball rolling on these...   Here's a couple of ideas I had.  Presumably some similar things might already be in Lurker, but anyway...  I'd like to try out the whole Relationship thing in a 5p game this week, so I needed at least one more to print out than the four we know of.  Anyway, let me know if you think these are comparable to the ones we know about, or if you have any other ideas for new Relationship cards.

Here are the ones we know about...

And here are a few ideas for other ones...

Of course, Sharing Information is essentially worthless if Patrice happens to be in the game, so I could use some other thing along those lines...

Now that Lurker's been out for a while, any comment on these or suggestions for more?  I'm surprised that none of them ended up in Lurker, at least not exactly (even Business Associates turned out to be quite different than my Business Partners).

I think I would scrap Sharing Information, which would be irrelevant in a game with Patrice, anyway.  I've Got Your Back is kind of in between The Best of Friends and Skullcrackers, so that's redundant.  I like Teaming Up but that might be screwy with Darrell Simmons as a partner, and it's not something that would likely be useful very often... not that any of the Relationships necessarily are, though.  The other ones I like, though, especially Psychic Connection, which has both a positive and negative aspect to it (like relationships sometimes do).  I'd love to come up with some more ideas like that.

Another one with positive/negative aspects.  The positive is the same thing as The Best of Friends, with a +2 instead of +1, offset by the negative if one partner is in another town or Other World.  The negative might be too harsh, and there might be a better way to depict a co-dependent relationship, but anyway, here's what I've got for now...

Yeah, you're right, considering that money can be freely shared at any time during movement.  This just makes it a little easier to do that at any time for that partnership.  Here's the update...

The update looks identical.  Did you reupload the image with the same name?  It often doesn't upload properly when you do that.  I don't know if it will correct it in a day or two.

There's always a delay for me when uploading over a file with Photobucket.  It's updated now, though...

I dig Co-Dependent, with a benefit offset with a detriment.  The trick is to make the benefit major, the detriment minor, and both of them "off" half of the time.  Co-Dependent is sufficiently conditional, but maybe +2 for being in 2 of 4 spaces is not quite equivalent to -1 for over half of the playing field.  The detriment feels a bit too much like Chaugnar Faugn's Slumber Ability when you're packing an Elder Sign.  Perhaps limit the detriment to a specific check?  Same Neighborhood: +2 any check.  Different board/world: -1 Will checks.

I would love a few more in this style.  Friendly Rivals (perhaps with monster trophies), Old Flames (+ to checks, - to Focus)...Odd Couple stuff.

That's a good point, though keep in mind that while it's -1 for over half of the playing field, it only applies if one is in one and the other isn't... most of the time both partners will be in the same town or world (Arkham), and some planning or timing might be needed to stay together more often (e.g. wait to go into gates until both of you can go).  But nonetheless, I think making it more specific is a good idea, though -1 Will is perhaps too specific.  I'm thinking of maybe -1 to Will and Luck checks.  And just to distinguish the positive part more from Best of Friends, maybe the +2 should perhaps also be specific to Will and Luck or some combination of skill checks.

I like the idea of Friendly Rivals and Old Flames...  I'll see what I can come up with for those.

Whoops!  It would seem that FFG already thought of Friendly Rivals!  And it involves Monster AND Gate Trophies!  (This is what happens when you don't peek ahead at your own cards.  D'oh!)

Of course I would have to wonder if I drew old flames for a combo like Wendy and Walter.

Heh, no doubt.  I think they were careful with the ones they went with for that reason...  I think something that implies a special loving relationship could work, as if he's her grandfather or something, and it could also imply a romantic relationship for other characters.  But yeah, "old flames" wouldn't work at all.

Hmm, I just had a thought for a card called "Old Resentments" or "Strained Relationship" or something like that... which would work sort of like a mini Personal Story or mission.  Something like: "Each partner receives -1 to all skill checks when in the same neighborhood.  If one partner gives the other a Unique Item and $4, then disregard the above penalty and either partner may exhaust this card to gain +1 to a skill check when in the same neighborhood as the other."

That could imply something owed being paid back, or a gift given as a romantic reconciliation.   Of course, the specifics could be different... that was the first thing I came up with... but I think the idea is cool, and it helps to really support the idea of the two characters having a specific relationship with some history to it.
