So, about the GR-75...

Recommended Posts

While I doubt much will change for the Rebels, with it being the only Huge ship for the Resistance, do you think it'll be weaponized? I can't really see them not giving it some kind of attack when the First Order has two extremely powerful Huge ships (the Gozanti and Raider are arguably the best two Huge ships) that are armed and very versatile.

No need for weaponry: Holdo manoeuvre 😆

Jump to Hyperspace and wreck everything in the bullseye arc 😛

Not sure that would work in this game..  As is there's no rules to 'ram' into someone to damage them.

First Edition Epic had the rule that a Huge ship overlapping a small/large ship would wipe it off the board instantly! Collision between Huge ships would result in both receiving a face up damage card.

And for the purpose of my theoretical idea, there's wouldn't even be any need to implement any rule of the sort: just declare you're jumping to Hyperspace (by spending charges or whatever existing/new mechanic or ability) and apply monster damage/destruction to every ship in bullseye at range 0-5 before removing your own GR-75 from the table!

Well the 1st edition it had no weapons, instead a combo where it could turn stress into damage, the idea is that the jamming action would apply stress then the upgrade can be used to damaged stressed ships. There was also the overlap rules that turned out to be way more effective than any hardpoint weapons.

Now when I made my Scum conversion kit I gave it a firing arc and a hardpoint to shoot, but I also gave it an upgrade that allows it to spend energy to shoot out of arc.

For second edition I can see them giving it some sort of hardpoint and have it attach a single turret weapon. So it sort of like the HWK in it doesn't have an arc it can shoot from but it will have arcs it can fire from. How those arcs work we will have to wait for the huge ship rules to come out.

The GR-75 should have a minimum of a fp2 primary (single turret or set arc) if the releases to date are any indication (there are currently no unarmed ships in XWM 2.0, also helps that even the "stock" version has a laser turret in the current Canon).

That I didn't know!

That's interesting! Really can't wait to table all this stuff again!

No joke... “the flying brick” build was a nasty ship.  Purposely ramming ships of all sizes was not only fun but effective and then combined cheap transport you don’t want to shoot at, nice.  I hated the thing 😂

However it should really be armed or at least the option like the Gozanti did.

Which IMO was just utterly silly and kind of dumb. I mean, do we ever see this happen in the SW universe, other than the one accident with the Raddus? And that was a gigantic ship.

Au contraire, we do see small ships (Arvel Crynyd, Vult Skerris) wrecking into capital ships (SSD, Arquitens) and causing catastrophic damage. I seriously doubt they'll keep that rule around. Ships that would actually be badly damaged by such a collision would have an easy time evading it (by current overlap rules). The image of a Gozanti bumping into the Ghost and the Ghost just getting atomized is kind of hilarious to me.

I mean, these giant ships are supposed to be scary because they're hard to kill, they carry a lot of equipment, and they have scary weapons! Not because they can play bumper cars and crush your ships with their hull armor. Here's hoping their weapons are actually scary this time around.

Yeah I wanted more of a overlap rules which sort of took a page from the death or glory rules for X-wing.

  • If a ship was not stressed, under effects of ion tokens and had agility >0 then it could roll a single green die to move out of the way and that die roll could be modified by tokens. If it had any of those conditions or failed the roll then the ship was destroyed and collision effects apply. If the die roll was successful then move the ship either forward or backwards until it is only touch the huge ship.  Huge ships can still fire at ships that are touching its base, small and large ship cannot.

Well we are going to have to see how huge ships are treated in 2.0 when the conversion kits come out.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they took a page out of Armada's book and the opponent could just place any overlapped ships anywhere at R0 of the huge ship that they want. You bump, you pay for it.

I would have liked that too.  OR the epic ship getting bumpped rolled one red (attack die).  If it was a hit, the small ship took damage.  Crit, it got destroyed.  Miss or focus, and nothing happened.

  • Rogue One: Devastator running through a GR-75
  • Rebels: Carrier ramming and taking out an Interdictor cruiser

Apparently it's not that uncommon...

That said, wouldn't mind seeing a change. Also, I definitely want the guns to be more frightening than the ram. I liked the idea you had to be careful around the cruisers, but I hated that it became one of the more successful tactics.

I would actually do this, but way more aggressive:  each ship rolls a number of unmodified attack dice equal to its hull value.

Small ships could be crushed with some impunity, and if a Raider wants to run over the Ghost it can, but it's probably a bad idea. . .

Don't forget that Huge ships will get to take things like Turrets and Cannons.  They are upgrades included in the Conversion Kit.  So, not sure, but possible to add Turrets and Cannons.   Ion Cannon will be nasty to run people over with...

Assuming, of course, those rules have not changed. I rather hope ramming hasn't gone away, but hope there are reasons it doesn't become a primary tactic.

You say "become" as if it weren't already a primary tactic! :D

I play with some sadistic people.

I said "become" as in 2.0. I haven't played epic since they announced the upcoming conversion kit and won't until we have it in our hands. It's time to unlearn what I had learned.

I've also played with people where ramming is not only a tactic, but sometimes the only goal of the game. Had a team epic game, my partner had one goal in the game, and that was to run a ship over with his Gozanti. Having achieved that late in the game, he declared victory (despite the overall tactical situation.)

It definitely feels bad when your full-health ARC or YT gets nipped by a fishtailing Gozanti and just dissolves. Very anti-thematic IMO. A faceup damage makes sense but having a freighter that's half as large as the Gozanti itself just evaporate is a bit of a head-scratcher. The Gozanti doesn't suffer any negative consequences either.

It's just kinda silly:

"Sir, we have ships directly ahead"

"Accelerate to ramming speed"

"But sir! We have turbolasers"

"Lasers are for wimps. Ramming Speed."

"But some of them are almost as big as we are. Won't that compromise our hull?"

"We have armor plating. RAMMING SPEED."

"But they're mostly small and way faster than we are. They can easily evade..."

"OBEY ME AND CRASH INTO THE SHIPS."

YTs are a fair bit smaller than half, but the point is good. I lost a VCX to a Gozanti collision.

On the other hand, a snub fighter is kinda thematic to be a bug on the windshield, providing it doesn’t hit something important. Only memorable event in the old X-Wing PC game I have is being run over by a Mon Cal cruiser moments after the TIE Bomber I was chasing in front of it. Heck, you even see a TIE Interceptor smacking into a frigate as Wedge evades it in Jedi.

If the design is right though, we won’t want to just run around trying to crash into things. This is what I want.
