I am switching factions and so should you!

Recommended Posts

Switching to all factions becomes financially impossible after Clone Wars. I am not sure if I will cease buying new GCW to feed a Clone army or if I will just not buy into the prequels.

Although, I’m not sure what rebel units would be super exciting besides Ewoks once the announced stuff is shipped.

Shore Troopers and Rebel Vets are the last GCW purchases I'll be making, unless they make new heroes or operatives.

I'm all Clone Wars, baby.

Just some musing about why switching factions is a great way to up your game and what I am switching to.

Switching implies that you don’t play both to begin with. It’s illogical not to own at least 800 points of both factions for Legion to begin with.

Wouldn't it be "more" logical to own only one faction, since you can only play a single one during a match?

But that point is irrelevant tbh. It's Star Wars, baby! All your miniature are belong to us!

When the game first came out, your best buy was extra core sets since you at the very least needed the extra dice and units. With three cores, you have a working army for both factions.

With the higher price tag of the new box, any players who already have the dice, cards, etc don't benefit as much from multiple cores of the new stuff if they only want one faction. If you're willing to deal with selling off the faction units that you aren't planning on using, then it's still a great deal. I don't plan on going this route personally, but I'm aware of the benefits.

Some people, like Tauntaun, refuse to play mirror matches for their own reasons. I assure you that some people will feel the same way with GCW vs Clone Wars. I find it very respectable that the person who takes issue with one of these scenarios goes out and collects multiple factions in order to prevent a situation they don't like arising, like Tauntaun has done for when a mirror match shows up.

No. It is also not logical to own one suit of clothes because I only have one body to put them on.

I collect, paint, and play both factions (whatever faction my opponent doesn't want to play).  I also supply the game mat and make all the terrain.  This enables me to play way more games than if I had only one faction ready to go.

Like @TauntaunScout I do not play mirror matches and prefer to play with painted armies whenever possible.  I must admit that not all my terrain is 100% finished however. :)

I will be skipping all Clone Wars related stuff.  I dislike the Prequels and so I'm not interested in building up the new factions and playing them.

I'm happy because as the slowdown of Rebels/Empire releases I should be able to catch up on my painting much more quickly.  Maybe even finish more terrain!

And then, maybe, I can paint my Kill Teams...

I'm probably slowing down my GCW purchases to only the future models that really interest me after this next batch. Particularly if the units become really random/FFG originals. There are still some potential units that might peak my interest (the rest of the Ghost Crew for instance).

Even with the price increase, everything over and above the Corps units is effectively free. Having spare Battle Cards (especially if they are printed with all errata reflected) isn't a bad idea given there isn't currently another way to replace lost/damaged Battle Cards that I know of. A spare Obi-wan isn't the worst, since you can potentially sell it to someone who doesn't buy the new Core box, or at least use the model as a test bed for paint schemes. Two Grievous models allow you to build him in two different poses, either to reflect different armament upgrades or just to have the different options.

Spare movement/range templates can be sold off like the spare Obi-wan, or painted to match different armies, or just kept in reserve to replace breakages.

And if you only really want one side, splitting the boxes with someone who wants the other side is still a good deal. If you each throw in $100 + tax, that's a pretty decent start to two 800 point armies.

I still have a bit of backlog for existing items as well as the announced ones. Haven’t picked up anything Imperial since the Specialists, and my Rebels are back in the wave 1 world with one Commando unit. Have to pick up some stuff to get them more fleshed out for sure.

I figure the Clone Wars will likely be well underway by the time I’m done and caught up. Even with just what’s out and what we have seen in the upcoming. $200 is a lot all at once so I’m not sure how I’d swing the double core set for CW and then go pick up extras as they come out.

I'll be switching to Republic after the Clone Wars stuff is released, and my Imperials likely won't see the table after that.  Beyond that though, I have no intention of "switching sides."  I have a full, 800 pt Rebel Army for loaner use, and I've used it to play a few 2v2 games, but that's about the limit of my interest in Rebels.  I have even less interest in playing as the Confederacy.

Two core sets for Legion is stupid cheap in the world of miniature wargaming and due to dice and other considerations makes a ton of sense even if you only *think* you'll play one faction.

Eventually a couple expansions will come out for that *other* faction that are just too cool to pass up, if you're a Star Wars fan. They'll add a hero expansion of your favorite childhood action figure, or a vehicle that's too sexy for its shirt, or a squad from your favorite setting, or whatever. Plug pretty much any two expansions into the models from two core sets and you have a decent army.

Well, if CW is well underway by the time you start buying into it, the core sets may be on sale or otherwise discounted. Nothing says you have to buy them both at the same time if you already have army/armies for Legion, I'm just pointing out that two core sets are still a cheap way of getting legal armies for either of the new factions, despite the price increase. It's significantly cheaper than spending probably $330 for the equivalent sets if one wants to buy both, and only a little more than the $165 for one army. Should easily be able to offload the entire "spare" army for at least $35, even after eBay takes a cut.

My son also plays so we have to field 2 factions, but we are not in the true competitive scene, I might make a RPQ for the swag and experience but have no delusions of doing well, so I do not buy the same quantity of single units as competitive players. I just bought our first unit of Snowtroopers, Fleet and Deathtroopers (1 each) this weekend with my FLGS big sale they had. I will buy both new factions when they come out, probably 2 cores to start and expand with at least one each of everything eventually. I am still missing several from the current line up as I just bought in a month ago and slowly adding to completion.

These two get it.

The new factions pushed me over the edge of getting into Legion. My son loves Grievous and I can not wait for some of the other Clone Troopers, but I am still an Imperial player first.
