Rotation Schedule released at least.

So we still have 2 cycles before the first two rotates out, so about a year or eighteen months, I suppose.

If I’m not mistaken, it’ll work like this:

5th cycle releases, 1st and 2nd rotates out, 6th cycle nothing happens, 7th cycle releases, 3rd and 4th rotates out.

Also, only the last clan pack for a specific clan is in the rotation, others pack from that same clan get out. And things like CotE follow their own (non-specified) rotating schedule.

I think I would have preferred the rotation be when Cycle 6 starts rather than 5, I feel like a meta of 3 full cycles plus Clan Packs, Core and Deluxe would give that little bit of extra for deck building when rotation first starts rather then immediately dropping down to 2 cycles plus the extras.

I’m still struggling to work out UK release dates...I’ve got over £100 worth of L5R stuff held up in preorder at my usual game supplier...still no sign of Across the Burning Sands...I feel like I’m way behind the local meta somehow.

So by the end of the year we should have the minimum pool of cards for the rotations. I am a bit sad that it is only 1 clan pack as they seem to bring more fun toys than dynasty packs, but I also suppose we don't know the actual release scedule for clan packs as they have been speed up. 2-3 a year was what it was going to be right? They need to release them in the same order other wise some clans won't get to use their packs for long and it would suck to buy one only for it to rotate out in less than a year.

It'll be probably late 2020 at the earliest before we see rotation start.  Inheritance is 3rd Cycle and we still need a full cycle after that and then when they start the next after that is when rotation starts.

Did FFG ever rotate cards back IN?  Or once Cycle 5 starts will those cards be gone for ever?  I can’t see myself keeping multiple cycles worth of cards I’ll never use again. 😵

Do people really just end up storing boxes and boxes of cards they don’t use?  I can’t imagine they have any resale value...I might make some starter decks I don’t mind giving away to friends/family, but the prospect of an ever growing paper pile is why i left MtG - I played until the first set I bought rotated out and then moved on to X-Wing.

Better buy some card boxes for the attic...

In MTG there are formats that let you use old cards, and, even if you don’t play them, you usually keep the cards in the hopes that some of them will get a higher value in the future.

In LCGs the secondary market is practically non-existent, and, as far as I know, there’s no different play formats, so yeah, basically those cards are just for collecting now.

That being said, a lot of my MtG and Old5R cards ended up punched with a round cutter, and then used as tokens to play D&D and L5R RPG.

Sometimes cards get reprinted within the new packs. This could potentially be a way to get errata'd stuff in its true form.

I'm a fan of rotation as it prevents a bloated meta and power creep. I respect leaving the core set untouched for a variety of logistical and financial reasons, but I feel like the chief complaint I've heard from players is that the core contains so many potent, key cards that it stifles deckbuilding.

The last several decklists I made out has had a majority core set population. I hope the next cycle has cards that make it harder to decide between core set cards and the fresh cycle.

Yeah I was able to sell my old MtG stuff no problem, I fear L5R stuff will just become bricks of cardboard in my attic.  I’m not even really complaining, just pondering.

Rotating/restricting I have no problem with, just wish it wasn’t quite so quick.

I think the issue isn’t that FFG got it wrong, just that I’m not playing enough at the moment to justify that big of an expense.

That's my main issue. I understand that rotation might be implemented at some point, but I was hoping it would be much later in the game's life cycle.

I don't have infinite space either. A move like this makes me more inclined to only play a digital version of the game than bother with picking up the physical product (especially as I don't get to play the game as often as I'd like).

I guess nothing is stopping local groups from running 'eternal' formats if they want, but it would be nice to have FFG sanction that option.

Unless... maybe they can implement tournament systems where the winners of tournaments can place "fate" on their chosen cards and those cards will be spared the rotation hit for a time.

No set rotation in Daimyo format L5R... just saying.

Fun Fact:  11 of the 17 cards on the restricted list are "Evergreen" (Core + Clan packs) and most of them in the core set.  Additionally, 3 of the 4 errata nerfed cards are Evergreen!

I think a lot of this also comes from the fact there have been 3 different lead designers on this game since FFG took over the IP.  Each of them had different priorities in what they think of as healthy for a game.

In netrunner the cards that were cycled back in were reintroduced in the new core box after rotation.  The new core box didn't include anything new it just took the cards from the core and rotated out cycles that they thought were important or not damaging and reintroduced them into the player pool.  People who owned everything could pass on the product (though there were a ton of alternate art versions of the old cards to entice you to buy it).

I'd be pretty happy if they did that again so these cards aren't just gone forever.  I thought that was a slick way to do it.  I think the rotation schedule they worked out is good.  Netrunner's was way too slow.   This should help flush out the meta a bit.   I can understand people wanting the pool to get bigger, but with that many cycles, all the clan packs, children and whatever else they release as a deluxe after that I think it will be big enough.

Yeah that’s just bananas to me...I wish one core set had x 3 of less neutral cards, and that the cards were “benchmark” cards, ie fan/katana: simple 0 cost +2 buffers to help you with economy when a 1 cost +1/2 + Ability came around and you had to start making choices, or stuff like rout/outwit which does the same thing but mil/pol.

Having so many loaded cards that turn into juggernauts later is probably my least favourite thing about L5R.

Also - as much as this makes me laugh, I like Pokemon’s preloaded decks in their starter packs, where the tutorial literally gets you playing right away because the decks are not randomised, then you can shuffle and play after you’ve learned the basics.

Technically in the article they didn't say those products were actually evergreen.  They said the current plan was for them to not rotate, but in the future they said they may include some of those products in a rotation.  So they left that expectation open.  Also Netrunner originally listed it's core as exempt, but then redid the core so that was a half truth.  The core didn't rotate, but the legal core set changed so that was irrelevant.  Honestly I think most of the problems in this game are in the core so more than rotation a core 2.0 would be welcome when we reach that point in the card pool.

I really hope that there will be core 2.0 in some day, but only after we have had some rotation out in normal way. Then it may be time to think the core in new fress eyes. What is good and what is not. Netrunner core was broken IMHO and core 2.0 did fix Many of the problem of the original core. The problem was that They did keep original core too much and it did lead to some broken sets afterwards.

I hope that L5R would remain healthy and somewhat balanced. And original core definitely did not do good job in that sentense so new core 2.0 would definitely help in long run!

I imagine they will definitely do a Core 2.0. It would easily be relavent to story arcs or even generational story relavence. Regardless, FFG has a lot of space to work with here. I could imagine, if nothing else, an every two (or at a stretch) three year core rotation. And I honestly think it would be beneficial for the game. I know with net runner, when that happened, if you had purchased all the packs, you would have all the cards, but purchasing the new core gave new artwork.

My big critique of this plan is that I would prefure if cycles were rotated one at a time, so upon the 5th cycle start the 1st would drop off and on the 6th start the 2nd would go. As it stands with the current intention certain cycles will have a 6 month shorter shelf life than their predecessor, and if the pack a month schedule is enacted than the first pack of one cycle will have almost a full year longer legality than the last pack of the next.

The last thing that came in up in Edinburgh was the Unicorn Clan pack.  They've actually changed the set legality for the UK Grand Kotei because the distribution's so messed up - the Crane Pack won't be legal, because no one in the UK has it yet!

Well this should give Mantis and Spider clan fans some hope. Since rotation is now official they can introduce them as great clans at a later point when stuff rotates out. That way the won’t be severely behind on cards compared to the other great clans.

“Other great clans?”  That’s a bit presumptuous of a bunch of stinky pirates and zombies...

...you can become a great clan when you pay for the wall we built to keep you out.
