Star Wars Armada fleet fairness

Recommended Posts

Hi. (For the title i did not know what tp place so just ignore)

I started armada recently and i have bought a mon cala home one cruiser, a rebel transport flotilla for rebels, imperial gozanti cruiser flotilla and a quasar fire class light carrier. Is this a fair set for both fleets or should i remove anything. Oh and I also have the imperial raider corvette. Please share your opinions. I do not like the looks of the rebel assault frigate so...

Welcome to Armada!

I assume you also have the core set, which means that your fleets (without upgrades) look like:

Rebel:

MC80 Command Cruiser (106)

Nebulon B Support (51)

CR90B (39)

GR75 (18)

Xwing x 4 (52)

Total pts: 266

Imperial

Victory Star Destroyer (73)

Quasar Fire (51)

Raider (44)

Gozanti (23)

TIE Fighter x 6 (48)

Total pts: 239

So, the Rebels have a 27 pt advantage on the base models.  That can be compensated for with the right upgrade cards, but it does need to be taken into account when you & your opponent build fleets.  Example: give the imps a VSD II instead of the VSD I, a more expensive admiral, and gunnery teams on the VSD.

Ultimately, you will need to figure out what type of fleets you like flying, and buy models that enable a full fleet of that type.  If you like fighters, buy fighter packs.  If you like big capital ships with guns blazing, buy an Imperial Star Destroyer.  If you like fast, nimble, gambler's ships, buy more raiders, hammerheads, or MC30s.

Also, play the fleet size that you can support.  If you can build a pair of 200 pt fleets that works around a common strategy, you'll probably enjoy flying that more than if you have two fleets that are built around the concept of "leave no upgrade behind."

Which admiral?

I am fine with any ship, there are just too many to pick.

I hope I got you right, but if you mean what is fair for playing a game where both these fleets will be pitted against one another, just settle on a point value and build to it(i.e 200), then follow normal rules. As ur just starting out though, I do recommend the ISD as the Imperial player's options for list building is quite limited here, and the quasar and victory are not easy to command at the first.

Hope this helps you decide what else you might wanna get first after your next few games :)

welcome to Armada!

I always felt the Assault Frigate II suffered from a bad paint job. If you find some white and black lying around..

I agree that it is disproportionate to the rest of Armada though. It's wider than the Home One..

You could use most of your base collection, the thing you need most is a way to bring the VSD closer to the same level as the MC80.  For this you're going to want Minister Tua from the Imperial Light Cruiser (Arquittens) expansion.  This will allow the Victory to equip the Electronic Countermeasures card to make it more durable.  Also Moff Jerjerrod (who comes from the same expansion) brings the Victory up to a maneuverability level that it can compete with the 80.

This would let you make Lists as follows

Rebel

-MC80 Command Cruiser (General Dodonna, Electronic Countermeasures, Leading Shots)

-Nebulon B Escort Refit

-CR90 A Corvette

-Medium Transports

4  X-Wings

Imperial

-Victory II Star Destroyer (Moff Jerjerrod, Minister Tua, Electronic Countermeasures, Leading Shots)

-Arquittens Command Cruiser

-Raider II Corvette

-Gozanti Cruisers

6 TIE-Fighters

Oh. Actually, could i use rebellion ships in conjunction with the imps and vice versa?

In casual games you can do whatever you want. I you want to play it by the rules, than all ships and some cards are faction specific. If you want to go to tournaments and play your games to prepare for them, then stick to the rules.

If you only want to have some fun and don't give a dime about competetive play, than you could try to mix ships. FFG presented a own format for faction-mixed games for NOVA Open. I think, it's a good one for gamers starting with Armada:

Oh. But i purchased an additional cr90 and nebulon b for rebels amd a victory. Is that slightly better?

You did the right thing! 👍

These are good ships and there come some really good cards with the expansions! And you can never have enough CR90s! All you really need to enjoy the game even more are the Space Fighter Expansions I and maybe the Scum and Villains.

There are some very strong upgrades in the Victory Star Destroyer and Nebulon B packs that you're going to want as you move into the game.  I'm very glad I picked them up when I got my Core Set even though I was wanting to get an Interdictor more.

Gotten any games in yet?

It also hasn't been released yet, so I wouldn't worry so much just yet.

As far as what it does the SSD Article gives a good overview. Essentially the SSD is two ISDs smashed together into onesuper ship, but besides being double the ship, the ISDs weaknesses (easy to flank, vulnerable to being focus-fired) are also increased.  I would advise building up your core collection before jumping on the SSD.

I have thought of the super star destroyer but its pricey and i do not know what it does.

It does it all.... Well except turning. Haha it's going to be a ship that takes some skill to fly, in my opinion. No one has one yet so we don't really know but I think it is on vessels so some people have done play testing.  Some people think it won't be competative. Some think it will be too powerful. I think FFG has put enough time into developing this thing that it will be balanced.  They have done a great job balancing this game.  Definitely gonna be a fun ship to fly.

You don’t even need to do the orca pattern, just paint it as black as possible and play on a Star mat.  Trust me the harder it is to see the better.

Or if you can’t bring yourself to pay money for something so hideous, just proxy it with one of the googly-eyed fish in a small bowl.

Just based on ship cost alone, the Rebel forces have a 100+ point advantage (if you had everything on the board at once.). Personal preference, but I would add either an Imperial Star Destroyer or a couple Arquitens Cruisers. That would provide better balance with your fleets, plus the Imperial player gets access to one of two great commanders (Vader with ISD, and Jerjerrod with Arquitens), and a must-have officer (Minister Tua with Arquitens). If you can, get one of both. Also, you should get the Squadron I pack for each faction. The Quasar is okay with just TIE fighters, but it shines with other types of squads.

With everything suggested it would allow both you and your opponent to have relatively fair fights, and have enough variety so you aren't stuck running the same stuff every game.
