Holly shoot! That‚Äôs right. Between that and the fact that the burst effect does not seem to have any apparent expiry (as written, it lasts as long as the Kiho is active), I think it deserves a rewrite ūüėõ

Limiting it from "you defend against damage from an Attack action" to "you defend against damage from an Attack action using Martial Arts [Melee] or Martial Arts [Unarmed]" could work.

I still find it interesting that it reduce the damage from all sources, even sources at range. It is only the extra "burning condition + weapon breaking" that feels a bit weird, limiting that second part of the Kiho's burst to be triggered only at the same range as the activation range is neat;

kiho: The Body is an Anvil: Change the burst effect to: If you have two or more bonus successes, until the beginning of your next turn, before you defend against damage dealt by the target, reduce the damage dealt by your fire ring. If you successfully defend against the damage, and if the damage was done at range 0-2 from you, one weapon the target used gains the Damaged quality and the target suffers the Burning condition.

what do you think ?

The melee attacks of some NPC's have a range of 3, so that solution is insufficient. Additionally, it ought to affect thrown weapons (regardless of the range they're thrown from).

To answer the OP's question- The burst effect singles out one target, which means that the burst effect fluff-wise doesn't apply to any attacker within range 0-2, it's more of a supernatural mark placed on one foe. Wyman, who attacks you at range 1 but wasn't singled out by the effect, will never have his weapon explode but Mr. X further away will regardless of what he's actually doing.

You are right, if the burst applies only before your next turn, it is probably ok to keep it functional at any range, though weird, it is an easier and cleaner fix.

Keeping it only until your next turn balances it enough anyway. Thanks.

Why can't magic just follow normal rules like everything else?

  Honestly, I'm in favor of the Kiho working on ranged attacks.  In my experience, this can set up some funny situations, but it doesn't seem to make monks overpowered.. at least not compared to shugenja.  Last session I was using the goblins with that ability to do 4 damage to other targets by using opportunities.. the Monk ended up knocking down about 8 goblins..  later on my shugenja flies over a couple units of goblins using "wings of the phoenix" or whatever, and he kills 30 goblins..  why should I worry about the power level of monks?

The range is not an issue, really. The fact that it is a persistant "burst" effect is a bit more the problem/imbalance.

And yeah, Shugenja are very strong compared to others. Doesn't really matter though.
