LoA Questions about Tutorial and Gameplay

Recommended Posts

So, I have IA and the LoA App. I have started the App twice now to try and get a feel for how the game operates with the app. I have to say I'm a little confused out of the gate in the first tutorial that assumes you have played the game before. Am I wrong, but it seems like the initial stormtrooper's movement does not make any sense. Am I seeing this wrong or are those trooper jumping over the Red Lines (Impassible Terrain) and then moving back over it when they are done. It's a little confusing. I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing that.

Also, so most of the time, the Stormtroopers and most Ranged Weapon Opponents are going to run up to be adjacent to my heroes, shoot them at point blank range for their first action, then run away for their second action. Is this correct? I mean, that's fine, but just seems dumb AI. So, am I also doing this wrong? I would think they would stay in cover and fire from at least a space or two away.

Thank you for any insight!!

They shouldn't be.  It's been a long time since I did the tutorial, but everything was working correctly for me.  Just to check, you are considering diagonal movement as one space, correct?

Eh... you are doing it correctly.  I think most people house rule it that they don't move any closer their minimum range to hit.  So, for example, three spaces away for Stormtroopers.

Yes, just played it again, and the only way they can make their moves is to have 2 out of three move THROUGH the impassible terrain/red squares. The first one can make the move if it moves diagonally through Impassible Terrain corners...can this be done, even in regular rules?

Seems like a better idea to house rule it. Thanks for that. Seems dumb to just have them be a merry-go-round of laughing shooters at PB Range. Plus, it makes "Engage" action seem unnecessary because everyone is going to do it anyway. I guess the difference being, engaged opponents hang around.

Maybe you're miscounting. A non-Mobile non-Massive figure cannot more into or through blocking terrain or blocking terrain between spaces (blocking edges).

A corner where any combination of door, wall, blocking terrain meet cannot be moved through, but corners do not otherwise block diagonal movement whatever the terrain of the other spaces are. See the movement examples at the end of the rules reference guide (you should at least skim through it in any case).

If you have expansions integrated, perhaps easier to check out http://www.iki.fi/a1bert/TheConsolidatedImperialAssaultRules.pdf  .

I totally agree. But take a look at how those Stormtrooper can Move 3 to Attack....it doesn't make sense. In the end, it's such a small thing, but I think it's an error in the app.

Really, I just wanted to know what to do about the lame Stormtrooper/Ranged attack actions and if I was doing it right and if there were alternatives. Sounds like House Rules are where it's at.

If it says move three an attack, it means only if you are able.  You cannot move a stormtrooper through impassable terrain just because the app says move 3 and attack.  Yes, the app gives the hostiles more movement, but they still have to follow the rules for terrain.  So if the only way to get to the figure the app is telling you to attack, is to cross difficult terrain, that's fine, but it still costs 2 movement points to enter a difficult terrain space.  If they have to go around impassible terrain, then that's what they have to do, you don't make them go through it as if they were a 'mobile' character (unless they are) If they can't get in range to attack with those 3 movement points, then they can't attack, and you'll move down to the rule that tells you what do after an attack.  The underlying rule is, always perform actions that are best for the Imperial Player.  So if the stormtrooper can't get to the person the app tells you to attack, but there is another character that they can attack, then attack them.

I'm merely pointing out that this is what the Tutorial Tells you to do, and it shows you directly where to place the Stormtrooper in the Tutorial. And I'm saying, where it tells you to place it does not (to me) seems possible because they start out behind impassible terrain.

Okay, I just tested and all movements indicated by the app were legal.

The first stormtrooper moves one space left, then diagonally down and left, then diagonally down and right.  The second stormtrooper moves diagonally down and right, then diagonally down and left twice.

Well, the big difference is that engage must end adjacent to a target.
