Well, this will be great... I should have paid more attention to Metsuro-sensei than my firefly. Hekasu swings the bokken to either side, testing its weight and setting his grip.

He steps up alongside Koharu and gives her a slight nod. "At your side, General Koharu." He shifts one foot back, lowering his shoulder, and looking across the tip of his blade at Fei, and then gives the slightest smirk.

((I'm going to enter fire stance and roll 1 success with strife. because I'm in fire stance this gives me one extra success, so my 3 focus +1 for success +1 bonus success gives me a 5 initiative.))

Koharu maintains a calm expression, and brings her bokken up to a high, inverted guard stance. "Then let...instruction...begin."

She advances, circling slightly to the side, beginning to rotate her bokken in a two-handed fashion, intermittently swapping her dominant hand. The bokken's heavy pine 'blade' whooshes back and forth past her shoulders in a complex pattern. A couple of cautious probes by the ashigaru's yari tips are knocked away.

 

 

"After a character resolves their Initiative check, that character enters the stance matching the ring they used." - you are not in fire stance for the initiative check itself, I'm afraid, so no extra bonus success, although you do increase your initiative by 1 for passing the check (and so does Hekasu, by the way).

Initiative Order:

  1. Koharu no Bunya sano Asahina, Initiative 9
  2. Hekasu & Yoshi-no-Kaze, Initiative 6 (order TBD depending on your relative Honour scores - lower Honour moves first)
  3. Flint Quay Village Ashigaru Recruits, Initiative 6 (PCs automatically beat NPCs at the same initiative)

Learn one of Fei's disadvantages (his choice).

Fei has the disadvantage Hatred of Ronin. This could be triggered in any situation where he needs to keep calm, or hold formation, or avoid engaging one opponent in favour of a more tactically important foe. In this scene, it specifically is likely to mean either triggering or exploiting the disadvantage to represent Yoshi or Hekasu 'distracting' him during the fight when he should be concentrating on Koharu or Aruzhan - Aruzhan may also technically be ronin but from her dress and manner she's clearly great-clan-born (if a slightly wierd half-gaijin from the perspective of a non-unicorn Heimin) and carrying stuff with great clan family Mons on it, so it's less relevant.

Air Stance + Guard Action means she is at TN+2 to be attacked.

Hekasu/Yoshi, you figure out your order of action and plan. Broadly, at range 3, you have 2 obvious options given your shorter weapons - air or fire stance and advance cautiously with a guard action, like Koharu, or water stance, and use a free maneuver action to 'rush' the ashigaru and strike in the hopes of knocking one or two down before they can react.

Any other cunning plans are obviously welcomed.

Yoshi’s cunning plan is to gently drub several ashigarus at a leisurely pace. In a near mirror of her moves, Yoshi steps forward. His broken,in 2 hands,, tracing lazy figure 8s. Batting at the tips of the Ashigaru spearpoints....

Yoshi is in AIR stance and also takes the Guard action. On Air 3/Melee2 I roll....I get a blank, a success, two options and explosion with strife. Guards is a TN 1. I keep the success (TN1!) and two options. I use one option to activate Cresent Moon style! If Hekasu is between me and Koharu then I designate Aruzhanthe beneficiary of my Cresent Moon guarding. After all she says she’s a shugenja 

Its now TN 4 to hit Yoshi (Air & Guard) and TN 3 for Aruzhan

I use the last option to add a ring die set to option on my next Martial skill check

"If you succeed, you guard the target until the beginning of your next turn. Increase the TN of Attack checks against the guarded target by one, plus an additional one per two bonus successes."

If you target Aruzhan with your guard action, you cannot also target yourself, meaning you will be TN3 to hit, not TN4

Hekasu watches as both Koharu and Yoshi take exactly the same moves he himself was about to do, and quickly adjusts his plan.

Won't stand out just following.

He quickly looks over the ashigaru, knowing their yari can reach him with impunity over his shorter bokken. "Let's get started, shall we?" He flows forward, closing the distance quickly. Sidestepping the readied spear, he brings the bokken across in a hard blow to the ashigaru's side.

Step 1: Set stance: Hekasu shifts to Water stance; set grip: 2-handed.

Move 1 range band (range 2 from Ashigaru).

Water no-roll action: Maneuver 1 range band closer to Ashigaru. (range 1).

Critical: Deadliness 3 against his fitness check, so either lightly wounded or I muck up his clothing.

Slipping between the ashigaru recruits' yari, Hekasu darts in and lands his bokken with a resounding thwack, leaving one ashigaru doubled up on the floor, groaning slightly in pain and fully aware that a similar blow with a live blade would have cut him nearly in two.

minions don't take critical strikes as per the normal rules:

"When a minion’s fatigue exceeds its endurance, it is simply defeated. A defeated minion is slain if the source of damage that defeated it is 7 or higher; otherwise, it is non-lethally dispatched. If a minion would be dealt a critical strike, it receives fatigue equal to the severity instead."

So a deadliness 3 critical strike inflicts 3 extra fatigue - pushing it up to 7 fatigue compared to an endurance of 6, which means one Flint Quay Village Ashigaru Recruit defeated.

The ashigaru's formation starts to splinter under the attack. Two of the heimin soldiers fall back, closing up back-to-back to clear the unwieldy length of their weapons to strike at Hekasu before he brings down either of them as well, whilst a second group push forward over-aggressively to strike at Aruzhan. Angrily, Fei barks orders to stay in a mutually protective line and push the samurai back, but his inexperienced soldiers are no longer really listening.

A forest of yari spear-points thrust at Koharu and the three Ronin.

Yoshi's bokken flicks out at one of the ashigaru attacking Aruzhan, "Play nice. She's a shugenja!"  

I use my attack from guard. I roll a success, an option and a success with and option(!). Plus success with strife and an option with strife. I keep the first three for a net: 2 success and 2 options. Ever so gently i crit one of the ashigaru poking Aruzhan. 5 plus 3 (for the crit) is 8, which should put one of them down.

I also inherit a bonus ring die set to option. I use that option ... to pass a ring die set to option forward to my next martial roll

The press of battle leaves the rapidly splintering ashigaru line starting to twist to one side, leaving a quarter of the heimin on their backs on the path, winded and coughing from bokken strikes.

Seeing two ashigaru splitting from the line, Koharu darts aggressively to the side, dropping low and swinging her bokken at knee height in behind one of them as they over-extend swinging their yari towards Aruzhan, with a loud kiai shout, tripping him and dropping him heavily to the floor.

Yoshi changes his footwork, flowing to the side and then back in a set of triangles. Taking advantage of the distractions of Aruzhan and Koharu, his practice sword sweeps down down on the last minion who has the misfortune of (briefly) facing 3 samurai alone. "Sorry. Sorry."

Then he turns his attention back to "his pack" as he shifts toward Hekasu. "Good workout, eh!"

((Yoshi shifts to water stance. First he attacks the last minion facing Aruzhan...I roll a blank, an option with strife, an explosion with strife and a success with an option. I keep the success w/ option and the explosion w/ strife & roll another success. With my kept die set to an option (from before in Air) that puts me at 3 successes, 2 options & 1 strife. Yoshi feels a moment of guilt as he uses the two options to crit...inflicting a total of 9 stamina on him.

Aruzahn now seems safe-ish. So. Second as a support action Yoshi then sets himself in Guard. I roll a successs, a blank, an option & an option with strife. i keep the success and an option. I use the option to raise Crescent Moon stance again, now aimed at Hekasu if possible (by shifting 1 range band if necessary). But I'm guarding myself. That brings my TN back to 3. ))

your 'free' action in water stance cannot be one requiring a check - so you cannot use Guard. It also cannot be one of an action type you've already used, and Assist has the Attack action type, so that's not legal either. So unless you have a technique or school ability, It's basically Prepare, Maneuver, or Calming Breath.

Note that you can use "spend a void point to" as long as it doesn't require a check (such as warrior's resolve)

Also, Crescent Moon Style only affects "you or another character you are guarding" - you can't target yourself with guard action then use crescent moon style to trigger if someone attacks another character

((D'OH! Sorry for the rule mistakes - thought the rule was not the same action (attack vs support). On this one I'm blaming a local player who uses this combo. Now I'll have to check if he's legit or making a mistake. Looks like Yoshi whacked a guy and is ... making a mistake while thinking that he's "crescent mooning?" at TN 2. Gah. should have stayed in Air. This might sting. I am still bellow half for strife and stamina so calming breath does nothing for me .... I am already prepared. I think I am already where I want to be. Thanks for the correction. Yoshi is "good"))

Hekasu advances once more, breathing evenly as he closes to the ashigaru. He leads their speartips one way, then doubles back, stepping in close and taking a swing...

Which goes horribly wide.

The shugenja resets her grip on her yari and bides her time, waiting for one of the ashigaru fighting Hekasu to make even the slightest miss-step..  and when the ashigaru does so, Aruzhan rushes forward like a crashing wave, her yari pushing the man's weapon aside and battering down his defenses.

  ((Switching to water stance, Aruzhan moves to within range 2 of ashigaru group 4 and attempts to use an assist action for Hekasu.  Since I don't have melee I believe this will add a black die to @Hida Jitenno 's roll))

that's correct. Assist is attack, scheme and support, so can be paired with maneuver and your free move, and unskilled assistance adds a ring die.

It also allows hekasu to choose and keep one extra die (of any kind), and allows him to 'pass off' one 1518491343_StrifeSmall.png.6434e11e967f0 result to Aruzhan when making a check (with her permission).

Pressing the attack, as Aruzhan moves in to pin one Ashigaru's weapon, Koharu darts in on the other end of the line, slipping  round and catching the recruit formed up behind Fei with a heavy backhander which knocks him back against the palisade, and leaves him face-down in the dirt. She is clearly breathing heavily from the effort, though, and the Ashigaru, whilst winded, is trying to stand up again.

Yoshi shrugs after his "experiment" in "Crescent Mooning" ends on an ... unimpressive note.  I would swear my father puled that off in combat

Koharu is attacking his group by the wall.... Aruzhan and Hekasu seem to have their group under control. Returning his full attention to the ashigaru facing him the big Ronin smiles. " I guess it's just us. Eh?"

((Yoshi slides back into Air stance and Guards (himself). I get a blank, 2 options, & an explosion with strife. I keep the options and the explosion. Explosion give me another option for a total of 1 success, 3 options, 1 strife. 1 option properly puts me back in Crescent Moon. 2 more options .... i will use them to augment my guard. Air + guard +1 puts me at TN 5!)).

Arms drooping slightly from the effort, Hekasu grimaces. Not going to be able to take much more of this.

As Aruzhan steps up by him, he realizes he can't fall back. They're almost against the wall. If I close in enough, their spears will be too unwieldy. Hekasu steps in rapidly, freeing his right hand, getting close and personal with the peasant spearmen. He throws a right hook...

Which sails cleanly through the air with no effort needed at all to avoid it.

 

Stay in Water. Set grip to 1-handed. Move 1 Range closer to Ashigaru (Range 1). Maneuver without check to move 1 more Range closer (Range 0). Martial Arts Unarmed 1, Water 3, Plus Ring die for assist:

Whilst Hekasu's blow doesn't connect, it does force his target back against the palisade, buying him space to catch his breath for a moment. Realising they've been pushed back against the palisade the ashigaru recruits are starting to panic somewhat now two samurai are inside their yari's reach and they can't retreat further.

 

Yoshi: Slight narrative observation "Minion Group #2 - Water Stance, Moves to range 2 of Yoshi, Strike Action targeting Yoshi, Manveuvers to Range 1 of Palisade." - Fei and all six of the remaining ashigaru have bunched up over by the wall. They could move into range 2 of you if they advanced again, but are currently just outside Yari reach at range 3.

Currently no-one is in range to attack you - I assume you're also moving forward into range 2, but one thing I realised; if you do, you'll be at range 2 when Crescent Moon Style triggers - meaning the 'free return strike' will be wasted as your bokken can't reach to do a strike action at range 2.

Also, the opportunity effect is "1211841275_OpportunitySmall.png.acf413431211841275_OpportunitySmall.png.acf41343: Increase the TN of the next Martial Arts [Ranged] check targeting you before the start of your next turn by 2.", unless I'm missing something

 

Don't forget you guys have got void points, and Fei's known disadvantage to throw into the pot at some point, plus any more details you establish with water or air 1211841275_OpportunitySmall.png.acf41343 that might count as disadvantages.

Yoshi slides forward to remain engaged even if he won't be able to counter-attack this round. Next round! ((My track record w/ rules isn't so hot this combat, but looking at the Guard on page 264 the last sentence says you can commit two options to raise the TN by 1. I'm looking at that, and not the air options. ... Sadly i spent my Void point in the market place.))
