Asmodee Germany discontinuing IA

Recommended Posts

I could live (reasonably contentedly) with a box and a wave a year.

But I think that we just don't have the revenue generation capability (repeat sales, and all) of Legion, and I suspect IA is a little more resource-intense than Legion when it comes to development.

I want to believe in the future of IA, it's a great game, and we have a lot of fun playing it.  I could pick up Legion (maybe), but our other two players are a 40k guy and a boardgame guy that doesn't (usually) do minis games.  So I'm not likely to pick up Legion without serious commitment from the others--which is doubtful.

Come on, FFG, at least "finish" the ecosystem (Endor box, Zuckuss & 4-LOM, Scout Troopers, Yoda...).

...

Please.

Tarkin, Ackbar, Jar Jar, Dooku, Bib Fortuna, Garindan, Grievous, Veers, Windu...

Occasionally hot products will not do so hot in foreign markets and it no longer makes sense to translate and print in that market.

My first guess is there is a new expansion coming and this just forced a decision. either dump more resources into it or cut it off.

Hasbro does not have the Star Wars license locked down in all markets. I know there are Star Wars board games that don't get distributed in America because of hasbro (the lego Hoth board game).  perhaps there is local competition that better serves German market. like Death Star Carcassonne.

It's a bit academic at this point, but... while I wouldn't object to any of those, and if IA went on forever I'm sure I'd be delighted to see them, I don't think it feels unfinished without them, especially the prequel characters. Conversely, Yoda, Ewoks, and Scout Troopers / Speeder Bikes are Star Wars icons (plus the two remaining bounty hunters, who aren't as iconic but would complete the set of six and provide something for scum in that wave). Until we get them, which it looks increasingly likely that we never will, IA will always feel like there's something missing.

Grab a random person off the street. Ask them who Yoda is. Now ask them who Bib Fortuna is. Exactly.

You know, what beginning to be the thing that bugs me the most is the fact that it would be so very easy for them to stop all these wild speculations and discussions once and for all:

- We, FGG, decided for whatever reason to stop developing the game.

OR (much prefered)

- We, FGG, want to inform our invested fans that there is still more physical content coming (not what, not when, it would be enough to say we‘ll get more).

At this point I really don‘t care what the reasons for the lack of communication are. They are 100% aware of what‘s going on here in the forums, which for me makes it even harder to understand.

Just in case this adds some light into this...  In the Armada forums our German players informed us that the SSD expansion will not be available in german.  Back then, when the community realized there would be no new Armada products for over a year, we thought that spelled doom and gloom.

However, recently we got news galore, new products announced and hints at future stuff being developed.  I forgot about the german thing until I found this topic.

In other words, this may be a german thing.  Let's hope it is, because IA and Armada are my favourite SW games!

Edit: My condolences to german players, you're getting the worst of this.

I think you should consider that the SSD is more of a display piece because of the price. I highly doubt there will be high numbers on sales on that one. So they just cancelled the translation on one item and not announced the discontinuation of a whole product line.

Sure, but Germany has been silent regarding the new campaign expansion.  It doesn't look good.  And the SSD still comes with a bunch of really good game components and cards to shake up the meta quite a bit.  In any case, the two star wars games with the least attention from FFG 'murica are the ones FFG germany is moving away from (And I know that IA gets the worse treatment out of the two).

So, display piece or not, this might be a business move from germany still.  I can only hope, IA is a joy to play and has a lot of potential.

When you ask someone "Who's Bib Fortuna?", that guy may say "Hmmmm... it's a trap!" :D

Yes but the expansion (I'm figuring you mean the "Rebellion in the Rim") has been announced close to 14 days ago... and Asmodee Germany really takes its time for translating articles... we had that problem with Legion and X-Wing all year long... they are behind with translations on every game.

That's the thing.

If they read these forums, they'd know what an issue this is for us.

I get it's not their typical style, but peeling back the veil is kind of important in times like this.

But see, they released an app campaign recently and announced European Championship.  What else do you need to understand they want to keep the game alive? They have even released a new box for Descent! Why would they drop SWIA and not Descent?!

A physical product announcement. App campaigns and op events aren't impacted by distribution. Ffg op doesn't even know what ffg is developing right now.

But as I pointed out here this is (unfortunately) exactly what they wouldn't do this because it would leave distributors with a large amount of (unsellable) stock and losses in bargain bucket discounts. This is probably exasperated because they cannot reabsorb it back into their own warehousing as they don't sell it on line themselves (for whatever reason).

Winding down a product is a fine balancing act between allowing retailers and the supply chain to clear stock (not declaring the game support finished  prematurely) and simultaneously avoiding disappointment of new customers who recently invested into the game. And the obvious way they would do that is to keep pushing product to the retailers, keep OP ticking over but stop printing and promoting the game. Which is what seems to be happening.

I am hopefully that the Ewok image on the last skirmish map meant something but I am still not optimistic.

A key difference is that are still reprinting Descent products but not IA. And there may be licensing reasons why they are still producing App campaigns.

From what I understand, Armada is getting a whole new bigger game mode (where players play on a 6'x3' space, like an 800-point Legion game) just to make the SSD playable. Which is cool for Armada fans!

X-Wing has/had(?) that mode to. Was called Epic and almost nobody played it. And those ships were bigger than the SSD and still only half the price (or even cheaper)

Just to add on top of this, in Italy we just got the announcement of new kit for upcoming tournaments.

I see this game alive. You just have to consider this game is developed at speed of campaign. You can't ask for frequent (4-6 months) updates because campaign is what drives sells. I wish we could get skirmish standalone but this will never happen.

So game is alive, just wait the next campaign if you want to know what's new into skirmish.

Nobody's asking for frequent.

We're asking for SOMETHING.

ANYTHING.

"Hey, Imperial Assault fans, here's a report from Worlds... once you've read it, stick around, because soon we'll be able to give you some tantalising hints about the next great expansion for this game!"

That's not news. It's not even news about news, it's news about a hint of news, and doesn't even commit to a timeline. But it would be something. It would tell us all that this game is not dead. And it would take them all of thirty seconds to type. There's no excuse, at this point, no reason not to do that; unless... well... do I even need to say it?

Right?

Aside from the fact that within a week it'll have been a year since the last physical content was announced (outside of the mats), just a simple "hey guys, we hear ya and just know that this game has stuff coming still" would easily suffice.
