Ah yeah I was hoping to find one of those types of books, but couldn't do it very quickly lol

EDIT: Round round get around, I get around, yeah

Bargain bookstores are the place to find them. Really lovely art books for painting inspiration.

So their official title is "Coastal Defender storm trooper", and coastlines are pretty common, though the unit description from when they appeared in Star Wars: Commander adds they are tropical specialists - which makes sense, you'll want a specific gear setup for high humidity, high temp environments where you'll want some waterproofing, make sure they swim or float if they fall in, don't die of heat exhaustion, etc.

Assigning them as Corps is probably to do with org-chart design, and the fact we already have Death Troopers. While noted to be somewhat scarce, Shoretroopers are said to be rotational and rank based assignments (requiring certain skills and experience), but they do still only seem to basically be senior NCOs. While the R1 visual guide says they're scarce, that's also just as likely an excuse to explain away why you never saw them before now - if LFL isn't treating them as particularly rare in their other works, FFG might not have to either. I never played enough commander to get to any special events or anything, but looking at the unit list, I think they're just a special event or map equivalent to Snowtroopers. And then on-screen, which FFG says they take heavily into consideration, on Scariff we easily see twice as many Shoretroopers as Death Troopers, and they don't necessarily seem as effective. The higher level of experience, specialization and better equipment makes them a good analog to Veterans as an "experienced" or "premium" corps, but they are not quite as elite or premium as say, the Emperor's personal guard, or ImpInt's exclusive cyborg Death Troopers. And for that matter, when we actually first see Scout Troopers, they're "the emperor's finest troops" sitting and guarding the shield for his personal death ball.

Love this announcement and was exactly what I was hoping to see.

Legion is a "sand-box" game for me.  FFG has given me tools to wage battles in many different themes.  The Core units are the perfect building blocks: generic Rebel Troopers or Stormtroopers.  I primarily play with my son so themed battles are easy to set up.

If we want to play an Endor battle? Add Commandoes and Scout Troopers/Speeder Bikes/AT-ST.

Hoth? Add Rebel Vets/1.4 FD Cannon/Snow Speeder & Snowtroopers/E-Web/AT-ST.

Scariff? Pathfinders w/ Jyn & Krennic/Death Troopers/Shore troopers

Fleet Troopers are fun for playing with Leia; the X-34 will likely see some play with Sabine for a loose Specter Cell feel.

Plus, Q2 release!!!!

This forum is certainly odd.  The Shore Troopers pictured are gorgeous minis, though I’m not sure my meagre painting skills would ever do them justice.  The initial card peek makes them seem potential decently playable as well.  Seems like a big win to me.

The overwhelming whinging is curious though.  But when the someone leading  the complaints has a phonetically spelled Russian swear as a forum handle, I lean towards there being a good chance of trolling going on.

I can FINALLY start buying stuff for this game!

I know it's a pretty silly reason to disregard an entire game, but I only want to do Imperials and I don't want to spend time, effort and money on booooring Stormtroopers and have no desire for a Hoth-themed force.

So I have been waiting to buy ANYTHING until I knew either these guys are Navy Troopers were coming. And I really hoped it was Shores out of those two choices.

Models look great, they go well with all the other Rogue One stuff I want. SOLD.

Well then, welcome to the game!

Thank you! I've played twice with friends and loved it, but as a hobbyist I just really couldn't get past HAVING to take boring white-armour troopers. Now I have an actual choice!

It's not that I dis-wanted them. I just think corps is the worst rank for them.

That and as a totally new unit to incentivize people to buy stuff, slightly differently posed Stormtroopers that have some of the same details as the ones we already have isn't the way. At least, not this 'early' into the game. Based on the releases in the last year, it seems diversity of unit looks is what FFG is going for.

Seems like FFG is pushing their fluff to make them seem more like elite security forces for military bases and secret installations. Which, if they were, could make sense as a Corps unit because a battle over an Imperial installation would heavily feature the security forces stationed to guard it. But also there's the general, "lulz, whatever, we don't care" of Star Wars.

Lucasfilm hasn't done a lot with them, that apparently leaves FFG pretty free to write their own work for it - they've invented entirely new stuff before, and even made small improvements which are both logical and good for the game (see the pintle-mounted commander gun on the Occupier).

Guys with magnetic boots and cold weather gear for guarding a big maglev train in cold weather conditions.

Far more extreme environment than the beach, I'd say, but then I'm not even remotely suggesting that "range troopers" deserve any more mention than shoretroopers, who get their own suit of armor because they need the mobility to better re-enact their favorite scenes from Top Gun.

While we're on the topic, why not the Imperial Regulars from Solo?

I actually want both of those please! I’ll give the regulars a commissar and the can scream “For the Emperor!”. You are way too uptight. I want anything they are willing to make. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it, it’s not hurting you

So i gotta buy 3 boxes of shoretroopers to get 3 mortars and then throw the Shoretroopers in a box like the Scouts...yay

Hate to break it to you, but I don’t think you can field the mortar without the Shoretroopers present in your army.

From the article: “While these mortar troopers operate as independent units and are free to lend fire support to any unit, they can only be deployed if a corresponding Imperial Shoretroopers unit is included in your army.

Its the same with the rebel version.

Plus, with the possibility of a stormtrooper rerelease on sprues, it makes sense to offer the pieces to make sandtroopers  in that.  Despite whatever fiction comes about, if you put sandtroopers and stormtroopers with a dlt on the table they can be confused - they look that similar, believe it or not.

But a different style of armour, lends itself to not being mistaken for another unit.

Look, I know we can do whatever we want for casual play, but FFG wants to have a focus on tournament play, where you Have to be able to differentiate.

There is also the fact that different sculpts and units drive sales.

Something else to consider with these troops and the rebel veteran; is the detachment a support or a corps?  In either case to fully get the return in points, you are limiting yourself in another area.

Now I do realize that the cost of the detachment synergy is minimal, and it seems these units can stand in their own without the detachment, it is something to consider.

For those interested, here’s a little bit of information on the Shoretroopers from FFG era sourcebook: Dawn of Rebellion.

Shoretroopers are Imperial stormtroopers trained in amphibious landing combat in coastal environments. They wear a modified version of stormtrooper armor over a heat-modulating dry suit that protects them from adverse atmospheric and geographic conditions where land meets water. They are typically stationed on watery worlds like Mon Cala or Scarif, where their training and specialized equipment allow them to operate with little to no difficulty in and out of the water.

Now I really need to start making watery terrains!

The models looks fantastic, and it's one of the more aesthetically pleasing of the new stormtroopers. I'm really happy it was these guys instead of the Pimptroopers from Solo. I would have preferred Navy troopers, but I wanted to see shoretroopers eventually. Given the other Rogue One content, this release makes for a nice, thematic distribution.

I see no problem at all with these troops being corps. In a game in which large battles don't even feature a platoon of soldiers, whether or not one side had more of one kind of trooper than another is not particularly relevant. It is believable that, where these troops were deployed, they were probably in roughly equivalent numbers to regular stormtroopers. I wholeheartedly agree with the poster who said that a strength of this game is its sandbox quality.
