Stop clone wars! (Where's my dewback and Imperial veterans?)

Recommended Posts

Yes, where are they?

A couple of weeks ago we all had our rebel tauntaun and the rebel veterans, thinking that next week there would be good news for imperial players... then clone wars erupted... and since then nobody is talking about my beloved, still lacking corps options for my imperial army...

where are my dewbacks?

where are my next imperial corps?

It doesn't matter if they are navy troopers, or army troopers or mudtroopers... whatever... but before clone wars makes us go mad, please, complete my imperial army!

Oh, they must have thought you wanted to keep getting expansions after Clone Wars got released...

Are you sure?

Well, the pace of new material for GCW will be slowed down for sure... I don't want to wait six months just to get my third corps unit.

I understand how you feel. People were extremely apprehensive of X-Wing jumping up to 7 factions and the effect on the release pace, but they’ve been seriously pumping stuff out.

I can’t promise anything here, but a bit of patience will get you a long way. The thing Alex said at the Adepticon panel that stuck with me the most was that they are trying to give us what we want. They’re Star Wars fans too, they’re gaming fans too... they want to give you Imperial Veteran Corps and Dewbacks, that I feel confident saying.

I dunno, but i'm hoping for shoretroopers or one of the types from solo. shoretroopers to go with the deathtroopers makes sense to me though. Dewbacks to me make little sense, they are too slow, and were only used for transport, there's no way stormtroopers would ride those into combat...it's ridiculous.

At this point they won't get released til mid to late summer so. They're saving them for articles in May and June. I was surprised they mentioned the tauntauns and rebel vets as early as they did

April: Heavies

May: Bossk + Sabine

June: Downed AT-ST or Rebel Vets and Tauntauns

July: Rebel Vets and Tauntauns or Imperial Corps unit + Dewback

August: Imperial Corps unit + Dewback or Clone Wars Core + Core Corps expansions

We are still getting them before Clone Wars for sure, FFG had been consistent with their release announcements for stuff. Expect new Imperial stuff in mid to late summer with that likely being the last GCW expansions for the year before they go full in on Clone Wars stuff, likely until at least spring next year. On the plus side look to a new terrain/objective set like Priority Supplies since that was announced to be coming shortly after Clone Wars drops.

Now, for the rest of the year expect:

April: Imp corps + Dewbacks announced for July or August

May: Support options for Clone Wars, hopefully with Heavies or Special Forces too for something new for September or October

June: More Clone Wars, or maybe the Priority Supplies 2 for October or November

July: Another set of expansions announced for November or December

August/Gencon: Likely 1 or 2 expansions announced for Legion like last year with expected releases around December - February, possibly with September and October articles focused on them rather than announcing anything big or new like how they did for the Personnel packs and the wookies and chewie last year.

Tell that to FFG. (These are from Imperial Assault.) I for one welcome our new reptile-riding overlords, especially if they have sandtroopers as the Imperial veterans,  toting T-21's and DLT-19's.

Based on the order of announcements and a couple of other factors, including when they normally release products, I'm pretty confident these dates will end up being within a week of being accurate.  This is just my take, but I've been correct thus far.  I don't see them releasing the new core before the inevitable Imperial Corps/Support release to match the Vets/Tauntauns.

  • April 25th Release - Occupier Combat Assault Tank Unit Expansion/X-34 Landspeeder Unit Expansion
  • May 23rd Release - Sabine Wren Operative Expansion/Bossk Operative Expansion
  • June 20th Release - Downed AT-ST Battlefield Expansion
  • July 25th Release - Rebel Veterans Unit Expansion/Tauntaun Riders Unit Expansion
  • August 21st or 29th Release - Unannounced Imperial Corps/Unannounced Imperial Support
  • September 26th Release - Clone Wars Core Set/Phase 1 Clone Troopers Unit Expansion/B1 Battle Droids Unit Expansion/Upgrade Card Pack

For the most part I agree with this, but the Rebel Veterans article says they're due out in Q2.  Assuming that's correct, that pushes their release up to June, and leaves July open for the Imperial equivalent, and August (GenCon) for the Clone Wars. (which I think has been their plan for some time)

You're missing the Downed AT-ST.  Historical releases suggest it'll get a window of its own.  I also think you'll see an early release at Gencon, but that wide release happens in September.

But otherwise, yeah.  I might have the order of product releases a little off, but I think the dates are correct as potential release dates.

No, I factored that in as well.  It's also supposed to be Q2, same as Bossk/Sabine and the Occupier/Landspeeder.  So, either the articles are wrong, or we'll actually get two releases in a month.  Considering the accuracy of the articles in terms of release dates, I'm going with that.

And I don't think they'll do an early release the better part of two months before the actual release of the Clone Wars.  Early release in early August, normal release a couple of weeks later makes sense; waiting until late September doesn't.  Granted, this isn't an issue if they just don't do an early release, but I don't think they'd want to miss the hype of GenCon.

There tends to be a several week gap between "similar" announcements when they aren't the same release such as (occupier and Landspeeder release).

Pathfinders were announced on Nov 19th and Deathtroopers weren't announced until Dec 3. Granted, it's been longer on this one, we're probably just having to wait because the Clone wars announcement had to be mixed in there. I'm sure, and hopeful, that we will see the announcement soon.

Fair.  FFG is always hard to nail down in terms of release schedule.  I know they do it on purpose to give themselves some wiggle room, so I doubt we'll ever get firm monthly release targets.

Wait, Legion releases more like one product a month? Not in waves, like X-Wing?

Huh. I guess I might like that better? I don’t know.

Yeah, the normal schedule is about 1-2 units a month, with a few notable exceptions, rather than one big wave every couple of months.  Personally, I like it better.  In X-Wing, the meta would get shaken up every few months, then settle down as everyone figured out how to make do with the new stuff.  In Legion, the shake-up is monthly, and other than the trooper/sniper spam, we haven't seen a true meta develop.

That ship sailed when the core set was released as a duel between Luke and Vader that never happened. Legion is ridiculous, just ride the wave.

Dewbacks would make cool toys. Every comparable SW minis game has had them (D6, D20, IA), so, not that crazy to think they'll appear in this one. D6 never actually got models for them but stats were released on Day 1. I'm still thinking about making some using 1980's quadruped Cold Ones. The trick is converting a stormtrooper rider. Dewbacks are still faster than a human on foot, so they're not that slow. People act like they're giant snails.

I believe the longest gap between new unit releases was last summer where we instead saw Barricades then Priority Supplies and new bases eating the June/July slots.  Otherwise, I THINK the release schedule has been pretty consistent.  This SHOULD be correct, but it's possible I missed something.

  1. MAR 2018 - Core Set, Dice Pack, Movement Tools & Range Rulers, AT-RT, Rebel Troopers, T-47 Airspeeder, 74-Z Speeder Bikes, Stormtroopers, AT-ST
  2. APR 2018 - General Veers, Snowtroopers
  3. MAY 2018 - Leia Organa, Fleet Troopers
  4. JUN 2018 - Barricades
  5. JUL 2018 - Priority Supplies, Bases
  6. AUG 2018 - Han Solo, Rebel Commandoes
  7. SEP 2018 - Bob Fett, Scout Troopers
  8. OCT 2018 - 1.4 FD Laser Cannon Team, E-Web Heavy Blaster Team
  9. NOV 2018 - Emperor Palpatine, Imperial Royal Guards
  10. DEC 2018 - Chewbacca, Wookie Warriors
  11. JAN 2019 - Rebel Specialists, Imperial Specialists
  12. FEB 2019 - Jyn Erso, Rebel Pathfinders
  13. MAR 2019 - Krennic, Death Troopers
  14. APR 2019 (EXPECTED) - Occupier Tank, X-34 Landspeeder
  15. MAY 2019 (EXPECTED) - Sabine Wren, Bossk
  16. ...

Put another way...

  • 2018 Q1 - Core set, 2x Accessories, 3x Imperial, 3x Rebel releases
  • 2018 Q2 - 2x Imperial, 1x Neutral and 2x Rebel releases
  • 2018 Q3 - 2x Accessories, 2x Imperial, 1x Neutral, 2x Rebel releases
  • 2018 Q4 - 3x Imperial, 3x Rebel releases
  • 2019 Q1 - 3x Imperial, 3x Rebel releases

So, each faction is average 2-3 unit releases per quarter, with neutral release sprinkled in here and there.  It's much faster than X-Wing and really, much faster than most direct competitors (Warhammer Age of Sigmar/Warhammer 40k) where you might go years in between releases for a given faction.

You know, the more I look at the announcements and what's coming out, the more I think the Downed AT-ST will release alongside Sabine and Bossk in May, leaving the Rebel Vets and Tauntauns in June to close out Q2.  Imperial equivalents to the Vets and Tauntauns could hit in July, with the new core set releasing in August.  That would fit the quarter target announcements and would make the May release a little "meatier" than 2x $12.95 small boxes, which would be the smallest retail MSRP month excepting the month that the Barricades came out.

Brace for impact!  Both Dewback Riders AND Shoretroopers have just been announced!

For the Dewback Riders (aka The Thunder Lizards):

And for the Shoretroopers (aka Beach Troopers):

As an Imperial player, I would like to take a moment to cackle madly at the sheer awesome that's taking place right now.
