Clone Wars Inspiration

Recommended Posts

Aside from being lazy and not wanting to look for this stuff myself, I figure there are plenty of folks who already have this information memorized.

How about posting some pics of different Clone Trooper and Droid Trooper paint schemes. Looking for official images to give people ideas on how to paint these armies when they release later this year.

This is how I’m painting my clones (Despite being a seppy fanboy...) actually based on action figures. Art work by Markus Aurelius Starkiller I think the name is..

Is there no massively nerdy site that has like full indexes of all the clone paint schemes? 'Cause it seems like there should be!

I tried Wookieepedia and you can get a list of the different units but the pictures aren't the best for reference material. I figured someone out there would have this stuff already.

I will probably paint my Phase I guys simply white, but, when Phase II troopers come out, I will likely give them more distinguished color patterns to reflect "shiny" and veteran troopers.

I'm really holding out to see if we get any of the Named troopers like Fives, Rex, Cody, etc. I don't want to paint generic dudes to look like them, and then get them later as carded upgrades for a squad, which is how I am expecting to see Rex and Cody, like the "named" Deathtrooper squad leader and Pao in Pathfinders.

I do a lot of window shopping with this game (unfortunately time and money have kept me away). If I were to ever join (which I'd love to some day), I'd go straight to clone Wars over GCW. My phase 1 clones would be white. The officers would get the stripes: a green sergeant (2 if I were to get 4 squads), a blue lieutenant, and a red captain. If I were to do Phase Two's, they'd probably be either Shock Troopers or 41'st with the Camo, possibly even 327 with the yellow, orange, and tan scheme.

For Battle Droids, it could be fun to do the normal tan, the Geonosis Red, or even the Grey Urban camo from the Darth Maul Son of Dathomir comics. I also like the red highlights of the Security Droids.

Phase I troopers I will be doing the basic white, with red scheme for captains, blue lieutenants and yellow for commanders. Don't think I will do green for sergeants.

For Phase II I will do them as 212th Attack Battalion

Nice! I did yellow striping on my Stormtroopers to set them apart from other people's Stormies, since most people around here did just basic white and didn't add any accents.

I will probably also split my Phase II troopers between this one, for Kenobi, and the 501st for Anakin.

I like Phase II  and the Legion markings, but can't stand markings like that on Phase I.  Too cluttered for me.  Phase I looks better with the ranks.  I'll probably stick to primarily white, but with trooper "squads" (they're more along the lines of fire teams) being commanded by a sergeant, with maybe one being an LT. If we ever get a clone Generic commander in Phase I, he'll get painted red to be a captain.

This is what I was thinking of doing at the moment. I really like the classic rank stripes for Phase 1s but I also think it would look good to do actual units too. I figure having three general units lets me have the freedom to run them with any Jedi commander that comes out while I can use the 212th and 501st ones with Obi-Wan and Anakin or even inter mingle them with the other units to spread it around.

I've even played with the idea of getting a sixth unit to do the leader in command yellow and then 2 normal troopers and 1 heavy weapon in 212th and 501st colors to further make the units look more like they are part of an actual unit. That or run 4 units not with full squads to have a stand in clone commander until one is added to the game in the inevitable generic commander and various clone commander characters.

As for specific clone characters, I like others would stay away from obvious ones but ones like Crys, Longshot, Denal, and other one or two episode clones would make fairly decent paint schemes along with the Phase 2 Clone unit skins from Battlefront 2.

I’ve still got these guys as action figures.

I took the grey plastic images from the product info page and just lightened them up in photoshop, went in and did the grey/black color for those bits and added the other colors so I could test paint schemes.

Ever since they were introduced I have considered the color-coded markings for military ranks of early Phase I Clone Trooper armors to be the optimal way to do Stormtrooper-type armors/armies, even if I am less than happy about the specific color choices (they should consistently go up in wavelength as they go up in rank - and cover more ranks instead of just throwing together all that aren't supposed to be front line soldiers as "commanders").

Wouldn't really add up to much in Legion, though, with one (green) sergeant per ("Corps" or Special Forces) squad with (blue) lieutenants, (red) captains and (yellow) commanders all vying for the Commander spot next to whichever Jedi is chosen to cinematically lead from the front contrary to their military rank on that day. (At least this fits the lore, unlike every non-generic Commander in Legion hitherto, whose participations in standard size Legion ground battles range from improbable (most everyone) to ridiculous (Emperor Palpatine, Jyn Erso), but I digress.) And on the one hand a Standard Army should average out to two lieutenants and a Grand Army to three lieutenants (filling out the technically undersized squads with Support and Heavy units), but on the other every Jedi is supposed to be accompanied by a commander no matter the actual size of the force of Clones they are taking with them. Long story short, the Legion rules hardly allow for so much nuance in military ranks, and not at all in a canon-compliant way.

The whole point I just spent so many words on is rather moot, though, anyway, as it wouldn't solve the issue of a single authentic color scheme, which has kept me from buying into GCW era Legion more than most other reasons (of which there are several, but most others also won't apply for TCW era Legion). I'd love to have a pink Darth Vader leading a rainbow squad of Stormtroopers just for the fabulous lulz, but most of the time I'd like to have as immersive an experience as gameplay restrictions allow for, yet also want to actively decide on a color scheme myself - be that between multiple official ones or my very own. And the late Phase I/early Phase II division markings allow for just that with many officially established and many more not at all.

You only have to follow a few simple rules for an authentic Clone Trooper color scheme of your own design: 1) Keep the majority of the plate surface in a base paint of either standard white, forest camouflage, desert camouflage, or stealth gray. 2) The markings need to be fully opaque and typically are in only a single color, although accents in a darker and/or in a lighter color of a hue either identical or so close that the untrained eye can't tell they're not the same over the difference in lightness and/or chroma aren't uncommon. 3) The patterns may signify ranks/roles in any way you deem fit or be fully individualized by each trooper - or a combination of both with certain areas reserved for the former while still allowing for the latter on the rest.

I fully plan on slowly building up a Clone Company of my own now and am heavily leaning toward medium magenta markings (or as close as I can get with my paints with minimal mixing) over standard white with some rough ideas for specific patterns. And as there are no canonical markings for each rank for this company of mine, I won't be constantly reminded of the discrepancy between the army structure lore and the army building rules. Hooray!

So something I've been considering...The Kamino troopers are in very basic white and light gray, but the Kaminoians are suppose to see in ultra-violet spectrum...So what if the Kamino clone legion LOOKS grey to us, but is a really knarly color/markings to the Kaminoians?

Because of this I've been toying with an idea to paint some markings in black light paints so they glow...If I follow through I'll post it.

If you take the color patterns of the 501st or any other clone unit, you could just make your own unit by choosing a color and following the color placement of where the blue is on the armor of a 501st clones. For me though it's an easy choice, even though it's not typical to give phase I clones unit colors, I'm painting them all as 212th battalion, with different variations of the color patterns for sergeants and heavy weapon troopers.

Great idea, but to really make it shine I'd recommend building some terrain with black lights in it so you can sometimes see the markings as you play!
