NEBELWERFER 33 Posted February 14, 2019 Hi folks. Looking to paint an AT-AT, and I was wondering if anyone could suggest a base color from either the Citadel/GW paint line or Vallejo. Thank you.

emsgoof 473 Posted February 14, 2019 It’s a huge monolithic galaxy spanning empire that rewards conformity and uniformity. I’m fairly certain they’d paint their standard walkers the same way.
BigBadAndy 640 Posted February 14, 2019 Yeah it’s more or less the same. The good news is grays are actually very forgiving and out of context (ie sitting right next to something that is the same color) it will likely look fine. But in reality both AT vehicles are a very light gray. So something like vallejo’s Sky gray is a good idea. Because there’s lots of real estate you can play with a darker gray underneath and lighter on top if you like.
Alpha17 2,853 Posted February 14, 2019 start dark, go lighter. I was pleasantly surprised on how that worked on my AT-ST, and I assume that would work on it's bigger, camel-shaped cousin.
aniron 218 Posted February 14, 2019 Looks like they have the same colour scheme to me. Keep in mind that we are mostly looking at the shadowed underside of the AT-AT and the sunlit sides of the AT-ST, which makes the former appear darker, but if you look at the very top you can see some more brightly lit parts. Bohemian73 161 Posted February 19, 2019 I looked at this battle scene to get an idea for painting. mine may be darker because I didn't dry brush a lighter color after the nuln oil, but I like the way both turned out. I posed pictures on this forum, but you will have to go back a long ways to find my thread

If you are in the desert and you get shipped a bunch of vehicles straight from a jungle, without time for a repaint, grey is at least ok in both. I tend to question the value of camo in Star Wars and 40k anyways. Battletech always justified wild paint schemes saying that sensor tech destroys any attempt at camouflage allowing battlefield heraldry to make a comeback. So go grey! Bohemian73 161 Posted February 26, 2019 I like my stroomtroopers white because they are too arrogant to use a camo paint scheme. same thing with Imperial vehicles. My rebels will use a green camo paint scheme, if I ever get around to painting them.

Though I also like to mix in the Battletech explanation that sensor tech makes camo useless if anyone's actually specifically looking for someone/something.
