Distinctions questions

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I have read the Advantages section and have a question: The book mentions that you can get fame and virtue distinctions after character creation. Is there a way to acquire Spiritual Distinctions later on?

Talk to your GM.

You potentially gain additional advantages from high Honor and Glory (or disadvantages for low...). And it's obvious to me that it doesn't make sense that your PC should suddenly get larger or smaller through something like the Large Stature advantage as your Honor goes up & down. But when I took a look at the advantages section, I didn't see text that specifies that you can only take fame & virtue distinctions after character creation. Am I missing something? What page are you looking at?

As a narrative element it at least seems possible to me that a Fortune takes notice of someone with high Honor or Glory and provides a "blessing" (Advantage) while they are worthy ... and maybe rescind it if they fall short. SO it seems to me that a spiritual distinction ought to be at least possible. My immediate impulse is to say ... talk to your GM

There is no text that restricts which distinctions can be acquired after character creation, but the mechanics for acquiring distinctions later on only offer virtue and fame advantages. I agree that working things out with the GM is a (great) option, but you can't gain this type of distinction through an official mechanic.

Yeah, that’s what I figured out, thanks guys. I decided to drop the lineage advantage, Kuge Lineage, and keep the spiritual ones. They’re more relevant to the character.

Table 7-2 p. 302 last column shows virtues/flaws and at high honor you receive virtue advantages. Table 7-3 p. 304 last column shows game/ infamy and at high glory you get fame advantages... Or at least that’s what I interpreted.

The text says the same thing: the last paragraph of "Honor in play" on p. 300 spells out virtue-type distinctions for high Honor, the sidebar on p. 304 specifies advantages that reflect fame for high Glory. It's pretty clear-cut.

So, the Acquiring Distinctions is a bit more vauge than I think it needs to be - compared to "Acquiring Adversities" (both on p. 100). In the adversities section, it mentions  that new adversities can arise from a variety of situations, and says "numerous other sources" besides examples of Critical Hits and the Afflicted condition (which leads to taint) which I would take to mean "any logical situation which adds an adversity". Distinctions is worded "some game effects grant distinctions, especially ones related to a character’s social attributes" but then only mentions the mechanics for rising Honor and Glory (though status is mentioned also for some reason...). But if the social attributes are the "especially", that also means that "some" is more than that small slice, right?

Since the number of Distinctions/Adversities is unlimited, and given that the way Adversities is written is very open-ended, I'd say that also applied to Distinctions. You save a small village? Boom, you're Hero of X Village.  Arrange a very good marriage match in game? Blissful Betrothal. Save a shrine of Benten, maybe you get that blessing in there. Reverse happens with Adversities also.

I agree with you regarding some Distinctions that can be added later, maybe in the future they’ll call the character in and say, your great uncle Toshio died childless and designated you as his heir, congratulations you’re a member of the Kuge now.
