What expansion should I get first

Recommended Posts

I finally got out my Eldritch Horror game, punched out the pieces, and began to learn how to play the game.

I know that there are a few expansions to the game, what order should I save up and buy?  (I cannot buy them all at one time.

The first expansion I would recommend would be Forsaken Lore - it adds cards to the existing decks, including the Ancient Ones, adding more variation.

After that it would purely depend on what themes you like and what you want from the game.

Masks of Nyarlathotep can be left for last.

I personally really enjoyed the Cities in Ruin expansion and the Under the Pyramids expansion.

Forsaken Lore is the one everyone recommends, but every expansion adds to the replayability.

First small expansions:

-Forsaken Lore (like said before ,it adds to the base game AOs, Nasty AO, no Investigators)

-Cities in Ruin (Best small expansion. Filled with theme, Disasters!, 4 excellent investigators)

Big expansions:

-Mountains of Madness (Adds everything. Most content, Good AOs, sideboard adds its own Research encounters not tied to any AO, 8 investigators)

-Under the Pyramids (Good sideboard to use with everything. Adds most Expeditions. Both AOs great, 8 investigators)

Thanks,  Forsaken Lore will be here Wednesday from amazon, (may be able to get in a game before then, or might be Wednesday night playing) and will get a few games under my belt, Mountains of Madness and Under the Pyramids both look great.

Welcome to the game! I second everyone, and indeed what you have already done, in that Forsaken Lore is definitely the first one you should get. To go further in-depth with it, Yig is a particularly strong Ancient One with some really interesting theming and story that is distinct from the other Ancient Ones in the base game. It also adds the Focus mechanic, which is a great option for new tests and will give you a fighting chance against your Lovecraftian foes.

Speaking about expansions more broadly, I think the incentives for getting them comes down to personal preference. For myself, I love the lore and thematic underpinnings of Lovecraft's world, but I am also conscious of not adding too much bloat to a game that already has quite a bit going on (not to mention are notably cheaper than their big box brethren). As a result, I have only bought the small box expansions, as I was concerned about how much tablespace the game was already taking with all of the various cards and single board. Interestingly, I have loved all the small boxes with the exception of Strange Remnants, as Syzygy is just a particularly strange Ancient One and I personally find frustrating to play.

Signs of Carcosa is a particularly cool expansion revolving around the Monster Gates, but it is also arguably the easiest to complete (not a bad thing if you want to introduce new players to the game). Cities in Ruin by far has the grandest consequences, as it is a true event when the cities are destroyed.

Happy gaming, and welcome to the nightmare!

Foresaken Lore does not include the focus mechanic.

You can always use pennies or some other markers for them, and download the rules for them from another expansion.
