OT: What's Left?

Recommended Posts

With Clone Wars on the horizon, I'm wondering what is left for OT in Legion. There has been talk of Navy Troopers and Echo Base Troopers, but outside of those guys, what are you all anticipating we'll see as expansions for OT-era before Clone Wars expansions roll out?

Plenty of named characters. Mothma, Dodonna, Rieekan, Jerjerrod come to mind. The Droids of course (I wouldn't be shocked if R2 and C3PO were a single unit like in Empire At War). Perhaps some "gimmicky" vehicles like the Rebel Troop Bus that you see in ANH (and R1) ferrying pilots to their ships, but I don't really expect to see that. Hoth Troopers and Imperial Navy Troopers for troop units. Some have suggested "Downed" Rebel and Imperial Pilots. The other named Bounty Hunters (Bossk et al), Jawas and Tusken Raiders for people who want that Scum Faction.

But of course, the most important one of all. The AT-AT.

I think both sides need to be a little more fleshed out with Operatives. So far we've only got 1 for each side. It seems likely to me that Lando will end up being released as an operative. The natural extension for Empire would be a Bounty Hunter. Bossk or IG-88 would be cool!

Lando, droids, hoth taun taun riders, reikan, mothma, dodonna, possibly ackbar.  A lot of rogue one characters left too.

empire has a lot of bounty hunters left as well as tarkin, thrawn, jerjerrod, dewback riders and lots of vehicles.  Oh and jet pack storm troopers as well.

Plenty left before Clone Wars.

REBELS: Cassian as an Operative and the rest of Rogue One as a Special Forces/Specialist hybrid pack, R2-D2 & C-3PO, Rebels cartoon characters as Commanders/Operatives/Special Forces, Hoth Troopers & Tauntaun Riders, EWOKS!!!

EMPIRE: Shore Troopers, Navy Troopers, ESB bounty hunters as Operatives, Dewback Troopers, Mud/Swamp Troopers, Inferno Squad (?), 0-0-0 & BT-1 (mainly as a "foil" for R2 & 3PO).

I personally do not think FFG needs to keep with the notion of releasing the exact same type of troop for each faction.  Empire can get more choices for Corps slots but the Rebels seem to have more units that would fit a Special Forces slot (like Rogue One and Phoenix Squad members).

I'd say that Mothma being in a skirmish over vaporators doesn't make sense, but then there's the Sheev situation.  The main difference is probably that people like the emperor (as a character).

Crix Madine makes more sense than a lot of high command characters- he's the top guy in charge of commando raids (for both sides) after all. Awful hair though.

As soon as you have Hoth troopers you probably also have tauntaun riders.  I imagine they'd fight as dragoons and dismount for combat rather than sit out in the open.  The same goes for the Dewback.  If it were a smaller scale game they could fulfill a cavalry role but in a skirmish it doesn't make much sense.  Even less when they're involved in the same battle.

Just because Clone Wars is coming won’t mean they are “done” with GCW.

I would expect a continual release of OT content just not as fast once there’s four factions out.

Tons of operatives left, even ones from on-screen without touching Rebels content. Cassian, IG88, Lando, any of the other bounty hunters.... (if you add Rebels content the inquisitors crop up as well).

Mounted Troopers as support - dewbacks for empire and tauntaun for rebels

Hoth troopers rebel, shore troopers empire, navy fleet troops for empire, etc

Theres no shortage of material. Just a matter of what you want to have or not have.

Lets see, things I'd like to see:

Empire:

Commanders/Operatives:

- Tarkin

- Thrawn + Rukh

- General Tagge

- Sontier Fel (Not canon, but would be nice to have him as a commander that called in air strikes)

- Inquisitors (Likely will be put into the special forces category with named personnel or heavy weapon options.)

- Iden Versio + Inferno Squad (Could just be a special forces unit)

Troops:

- Mudtrooper/Naval trooper (As some kind of cheap cannon fodder unit, maybe they get a dodge token when they lose a model?)

- Imperial Security Droids

- Shoretroopers

- Imperial Pilots

Vehicles:

- AT-DP

- AT-PT

- Imperial Trooper Transport from Rebels

- Imperial Hover Tank from Rogue One

Rebels:

Commanders/Operatives:

- Mon Mothma (Could be a non combat type leader who motivates the forces with her.)

- General Dodonna

- General Rieeken

- Lando

- Operative versions of Han, Leia, and/or Luke so you could run the OT crew all together in one list

- R2-D2 and C-3PO (Though I could see them waiting to release them as a dual Rebel/Republic unit once Republic drops.)

- Wedge (Would be nice to have him as a commander that called in air strikes)

- Cassian + K2 + Chirruit + Baze + I guess Bohdi too

- Hera + Kanan + Ezra + Sabine + Zeb + Chopper + Ahsoka

Troops:

- Echo Base troopers (likely with some ability that gives them a bonus for being behind cover or not moving during their activation.)

- Rebel Pilots

- Trooper variant we see in Rebels

- Saw's Partisans with Two Tubes as a unique option

- Rebel Heavy Troopers like the ones we saw in Star Wars: Galaxies

Vehicles:

- T2-B

- T4-B

- Troop Transport

So a fair few things I'd like to see released before and after Clone Wars drops. Especially the pilots since it opens the door for more cross play between Legion and X-Wing.

I feel like we're certain to see Lando and the Droids before OT releases slow down to do Clone Wars. I'd like to see a hovertank, tauntauns, dewbacks, and of course famous Imperial commander "You rebel scum," guy too though.

Lots of options, and when Clone Wars come out, maybe the OT releases become more spaced out, maybe not.

A box of a sandtrooper on Dewback would be cool, like the AT-RT, one per box based on size, I guess.

They could also add Sandpeople, Echo Base with Taun Tauns...*gulp* Ewoks...

Nothing says they will stop making OT stuff, in fact, I think they would always try to make *something* from the OT every year. They're the classics, after all.

@Animewarsdude I think transports are unlikely since the "Rapid Reinforcements" card already emulates their main functionality. Additionally, the T4-B and T2-B are in canon as long as the AT-ST is tall, so wouldn't fit on any of the current bases since so far FFG has stuck to scale.

I'm also not sure how I feel about pilots as ground troops... I would love a couple sculpts, especially as alternate objectives, but in general I don't think pilots should feature as a unit.

I really hope they release every possible gcw expansion before moving onto the clone wars.  I don’t want to have to keep checking every other month to see what releases are on the horizon, clone wars or gcw.  Give us every gcw expansion so that we have a complete game for that era, then move onto clone wars with a new core set and a big wave 1 release in early 2020.  Everyone should be happy with this format.

I would not be happy, as the CW armies should be balanced against the GCW armies. There are at least a couple of people at my FLGS waiting for the CW to drop before they start playing Legion, and some people with no interest in purchasing CW armies.

Also, if they release "every possible gcw expansion" then what happens to the game after the CW armies are likewise done? V2, or just die off due to lack of income for FFG?

Rather than re-list what's already been mentioned, I'll mention some new things!

Let's start off with this freak.

latest?cb=20080427153922

The XR-85 Imperial Droid Tank. It's big, but quite a bit smaller than an AT-AT.

latest?cb=20080328173601

latest?cb=20091030185230

The Tie Crawler and Mauler, because why not. They're funny and funky, and would be a neat fast attack vehicle for the Empire, like a ground based speeder.

500?cb=20120228045005

The IDT, or Imperial Dropship Transport. Oddly enough, its canon. Small enough to easily fit on the table too, better than a Lambda!

uKsmnSJ.jpg

The unnamed rebel speeder from Hoth, only used in one scene but pretty cool IMO. It's fun and very rebel-ish, like a third world warzone pickup with a .50 cal on the back.

What happens is I have purchased everything I have interest in for this game and at that point I can move on and invest in another game. I don’t have interest in sticking with the same game for 5 or 10 years! I want a complete game, I want to play for a year or two and then sell it and get a new game to try.

In my experience miniature wargames are typically only "complete" when the company stops supporting them. Otherwise there is always another unit, theatre book, or unit upgrade to buy since that's how they are designed, unlike board games like Risk or Star Wars Rebellion that are complete games in a single box. You can choose to stop buying at any time of course, but then you would miss out on any GCW era units that are released after being introduced in the Cassian live action series, or some other new film. Honestly, if you only plan to play with units you own on both sides, then you could consider your collection complete now since models have been released that take every unit slot.

These kinds of games don't usually unfold like that. And if the game was "completed" it would be a buyer's market and you'd get very little cash for your used stuff. For your purposes I'd call it "complete" unless there's a favorite movie character or squad you're really eager to paint up.

Game, or game not. There is no try.

I don't think there's enough operatives yet? Since the ones we have are unique and you get two slots? Or I'm making stuff up. I have  lot of rules sets floating around in my brain.

I slightly mistyped, what I meant was a unit if each category, but you are right, once one more operative is released then there is the possibility of filling every slot in each category.

Yup... I want all four factions to be balanced and able to coexist too.

That said, I do hope that when CW is here the GCW slows down until they catch up so it’s not a constant rat race and I feel like I could pick up a CW faction.

I know people who are waiting for CW as well. One guy bought Rebels hoping for Obi-Wan and Yoda and I informed him he’s not going to get it (for a while). Now he’s wanting republic for all the Jedi. I don’t blame him.

I am hopeful this game slows down on releases soon because this isn’t sustainable for 5+ years of content. But, it’s a great kickstart for a new game. I want this game to be around 5+ years, and whenever support does end I want it playable without support using last available rule set for those of us who set up a home game.

May I observe that expandable miniature games may not be for you then. Or just declare it complete at any time you want, but what you want for two sides, and then have friends play with just the stuff you’ve collected as a board game.

This plan won’t work too well - good luck. Most of us invest in these sorts of games with the intent of always being able to play it (or at least able to for a long time not a year).
