Dunno if I will pick these up. They will be a good counter to Wookiees but I don't plan to get the Emperor.

Stash them away until Clone Wars comes out. Then they should have plenty of Jedi to shut down.

Going to start with 2

You can fit 4...

Palpatine (210) + Anger (5) + Force Choke (5) + Force Push (10): 230

4x Royal Guard (75) w/Extra trooper (25) and Tenacity (4): 416

3x Stormtroopers (44 each): 132

778 points. Enough to add two extra stormtroopers.

Palpatine's entourage ability allows you to take 1 extra Royal Guards Unit.

Ah nice, hadnt really read his stuff yet.  So with him, you could take(for example) 3 scout squads and 1 Guard unit?

Yes. The rank of 1 Royal Guard unit does not count for squad building.

Imperial or Royal. Not both. Is this idiocy "canon"?

Palpatine's guards are Imperial Royal Guards.

The reason Imperial is specified is that Mandalorians canonically also have a bodyguard style unit called Royal Guards.

Those ones therefore are the Mandalorian Royal Guard.

Naboo also had Royal Guards, but I'm not sure of that's what they're called in canon.

So the idiocy is George Lucas, not FFG. Thought as much.

Thing is,  we cant compare it to real life in this galaxy, maybe thats just how they are in that Galaxy far far away.

It's a perfectly acceptable way to refer to them.  For example, there are/were quite a few Royal Guards in real life: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Guard So to make it easier to tell which one I'm talking about I might say the Greek Royal Guard or the Moroccan Royal Guard.  That's all that is happening here, it's phrased in such a way to make clear that these are the Royal Guards of the Empire, as opposed to the Royal Guards of Naboo, Mandalore, the Sith, etc.

Imperial is the adjective for emperor. Royal is the adjective for?

Imperial = Emperor, Empire

Royal = King, Kingdom

´Imperial royal guard’ doesn’t make a lot of sense... it has been bothering me for a while.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one having first world problems with my wargaming hobby :)!

I can't believe we're arguing these semantics here, but it's important to remember that "Imperial Guard" is a thing associated with another 800-pound gorilla. Even if they call them "Astra Militarum" now to be even more trademarkable.

The units are traditionally just "Royal Guards" in star wars, but I think since we're a multi-faction game (and who knows, these guys but Blue might be coming to Republic as "Senatorial Guards") putting the faction in the name probably helps avoid confusion.

Think of it as saying something like French Royal Guards. The Imperial in this case is tantamount to nationality, not political structure per se.

ie Naboo Royal Guard or Alderaanian Royal Guard.

Not the same thing. The Passion according to St John: "We have no king but the emperor"
