What Commander Calrissian upgrade will be like

Recommended Posts

With the SSD EP there will come imbalance to the force! With Piett and the Emperor himself the Imperials will have 12 Commander upgrades, while Rebels only have 10. (Even worse with officer upgrades!) So it's time to start wondering how FFG will bring balance to the force(s).

I would like to see another iconic character of OT as commander and my favorite is General Lando Calrissian. He led the rebel squadrons during the battle over Endor. So he maybe could bring a commander effect that affects squadrons, like Admiral Sloane. Or the effect could be quite similar to that of his officer upgrade card.

What would you imagine? What would you prefer?

Lando Calrissian:

At the start of the ship phase, you may move to your opponent’s side of the play area.  When an enemy ship executes a maneuver, you may yell “YEEHAAW!”  Upright ships and squadrons affected unintentionally by your opponent remain in their current positions; fallen ships and squadrons are treated as destroyed and are removed from the play area.

In the Battle of Endor rebel squads worked in a coordinated way to take down a Super Star Destroyer by picking off key functions that gradually debilitated the might ship.

If General Calrissian had an ability that gave rebel the squads something like the following that would fit that theme rather well:

While a friendly squadron without Rogue is attacking a ship, it may spend 1 die with a 'crit' icon. If it does the defender gains 1 raid token of your choice.

OR

While a friendly squadron without Rogue is attacking a ship, it may spend 1 die with a 'crit' icon. If it does you may choose and exhaust one of the defender's upgrade cards.

Commander Calrissian:

Once per ship activation, you may roll three blue die. If you have at least two [HIT] icons, the defender gains one raid token of your choice. If you roll no [HIT] icons, you gain one raid token of your choice.

23 pts.

I like the gambling aspect of that idea!

We should remember that Calrissian is a quite successful Galactic Entrepreneur who lost more ships in sabacc games than in combat! ?

I feel like he should be a rogue booster rather than non-rogue. We don’t need to boost Yavaris and rebel Rogues could use some help.

Good point! It could be a boost for squadrons attacking during Squadron Phase.

Rogues only could also be fun and thematic! Calrissian believes in independence and proactive thinking!

Yep, and while it's in his favor there is a drawback to using it and upgrades like Toryn wouldn't make it OP because she wouldn't apply. On paper it sounds pretty balanced.

Lando Calrissian (Commander): "While defending, at the begin of Spend Defense Token step, a friendly ship or squadron may roll a red die. If you get a double hit symbol, you can spend 1 Defense Token to cancel all attack dice. If you get 1 hit or crit symbol you may ready 1 exhausted defense token. If you get an accuracy result, the attacker may choose and discard 1 of your defense tokens." [28 pts.]

"We're not gonna get another chance at this, Admiral!"  "Yes, that's right. I said move as close as you can to those star destroyers and engage them at point-blank range!.. We might just take a few of them with us!

"Before a friendly ship's Attack Step, it may choose to attack only at close range this round.  If it does, it may add 2 Blue Dice to its attack pool while attacking a ship."

Sort of like the close range Ackbar variant, and would work well with Hammerheads, MC30s, Peltas, and MC75s.  Lando was, in nothing else, a bold commander who confidently took the fight directly to the Empire.  If it weren't for his presence, the Rebel Fleet would have retreated from Endor under Admiral Ackbar's command, unwilling to undertake a direct confrontation with the Imperial Fleet.  But Lando crunched the odds in his head and knew the Rebels could sustain a direct assault long enough, while damaging the Imperial ships present, to see if their gamble for the shield generator would pay off.  Had Lando not been at Endor... well, Han, Leia, and Chewbacca would have been killed and who knows what would have come of Luke's confrontation with Palpatine as he watched the Rebel fleet abandon the sector as ISDs gave chase.

Alternatively, to capture this head-on direct-fight mentality, he could be the 'front-arc' version of Ackbar, perhaps adding 2 Blue dice if a ship chooses to only attack out of its front arc.  But this might be a bit hard to balance with Liberties, though would breathe new life into Nebulon-Bs and would be solid on Hammerheads as well.

I don't want to see a direct 'gambling' mechanism on Lando, because they've already done that twice in X-Wing and no one ever uses his crew card competitively because, surprise surprise, high risk low reward mechanics are too unrelaible to use competitively.

You're all wrong. The most iconic Lando's scene is warning about the shield. Just before Ackbar's one.

The best thing he should allow to you is cancel an attack.

I allow you to turn that into something positive like just after rolling the dice you can cancel the attack and choose another target to attack instead. Once per ship activation or something like that.

Or just make it a fleetwide version of his card. When a friendly ship defends, it may exhaust its title card to force the attacker to reroll 1 or more dice if your choice.

Exhaust its title card or the commander upgrade card? It must be a very cheap commander, if he only works on ships with title upgrades.

Lando isnt about squads. He is a gambler. His ability should be inconsistent and should potentially backfire but should have a good outcome more than not. A walking red die.

Lando Calrissian

After deploying fleets you may place 1 round token on this card. If you do, during the round that matches that token, you cannot attack and friendly defense tokens do not exhaust when spent. If your flagship is not destroyed that round, the game does not end at round 6.

Hard to play competitively, sure, but does kinda fit with his "we've got to buy them more time" theme
