my guess is that, when they decided that kata would not be listed by elemental affiliation, they forgot to add things like "Rank 1-2 Ranged Kata" or "Rank 1-3 Melee Kata"

Hmmm. That makes a bit of sense.

All of the redundancy I have spotted are in kata (though I'm far less familiar with the other types so far). Maybe some quick and simple errata can clear up the confusion.

I'm home-brewing this, since, as I read it, this is definitely the case. For the Kakita, I suggest replacing Strike as Air with Cadence. Cadence thematically fits, as Doji Diplomats are enticed to take it. If both Doji courtier and Kakita yojimbo have the technique, they can talk to each other in double meanings that others don't understand.

For the Lion, they are also missing a nudge toward shuji. My suggestion here is that Warrior's Resolve be replaced with Unearthed Ancestry. Essentially the Lion recalls whether or not you or your family has been dishonorable, because of course the Lion clan would try to attack you for that in court.

The Phoenix clan is harder because they are so weirdly stylized. The Shiba school, I'm leaning toward a ritual. Probly Tea Ceremony. For Kaito, I think you should also grant any Rank 1-2 Ritual. The Kaito start with two rituals, and a third choice really hammers home the shrine keeper/mystic idea.

im not as familiar with all techniques, but if you come up with a good list of suggestions (nothing overpowered, and thematic) i might include it in my list of homebrew stuff.

the rules as so broken in the weapons.. that i'm trying to wrap my head over this. like the Ono being a clearly better Zanbato... because; makes sense. the **** is just not double checked/tested enough.

Having just read this, I’m going with the specific kata, plus one more counts for full advancement. Until otherwise clarified. Seems fair to distinguish between characters gunning for their rank 6 and those interested in seeking broader experience. I also figure it leaves room for role playing when a student is taking far too long to advance their rank.

I'm still new to this but I wasn't sure how advancement worked. It seems you need to sped 20xp on you curriculum to advance in rank, then 24xp, etc...

However sometimes you have the same skills to increase. How do you keep track of the XP you spend on rank 1 and those on rank 2? Maybe I'm missing an information though ^^'

You may wish to dedicate notes to help with the accounting, but you won't be spending any XP on rank 2 until rank 1 is complete. Once you've spent at least 20 xp worth of curriculum advancements (with non curriculum counting half), then you being working on the 24 in rank 2.

The only time you should need to account for xp side by side is if you are also working on completing a title, such as Emerald Magistrate.

The beta had some curious wordings, which implied that only one rank of each whatever counted. As you bought things, you filled in the line on the form for that thing. And it only allowed buying more than 1 item for skill groups. It had some interesting effects on spending.
