CC Confusion

Recommended Posts

So I got my core today and was looking through and character creation kind of confused me. So I get that you get your initial skills and ring bonuses etc. From what you pick and there doesn't seem to be any starting xp so i'm wondering how you get advantages and the starting techniques.

  • By default, there isn't any starting XP. There is guidance about a chunk of starting XP based on the level of campaign you want to play, but that's variable depending on the GM's storyline (newly-minted samurai up to a bunch of clan heroes)
  • The starting techniques listed with the schools come free.
  • Advantages (and disadvantages) aren't bought with XP - you either get them at creation via your 20 questions answers, or pick them up later for high/low glory and honour, or similar campaign events.

The core isn't much different from the Beta in overall scope.

Starting Advantages and disadvantages are in specific questions (p 93):

Distinction: Q9
Adversity: Q10
Passion: Q11
Anxiety: Q12
Extra: Q 13

Starting talents are in the schools.

No XP are given as standard

The explanation for techniques is on pg. 56 in the box Elements of Your School in the heading Starting Techniques. It states your characters starts with everything listed here unless it tells you to choose from a list.

The game of 20 Questions really comes to the front in this edition. Your characteristics are determined by the narrative choices and XP is reserved for future advancement. Barring making more experienced characters.

Im trying to figure out how were going to do creation with 1 book for up to 6 or 7 players.

Semi simultaneously. Print out the game of 20 questions sheet and character sheet for each player. Have the gamemaster hold onto the book and present the general options to the  group as the questions come up. As options are chosen pass the book to the players as needed. Some material can be transmitted verbally. The questions that lead to advantages and disadvantages are the ones that will be most difficult to do this for, unless the player have a basic idea and the gamemaster can suggest a specific option. The starting technique choices can be the same to a lesser extent, since there will be less to look up.

This may be slower than each player being experienced and using their own book, but it can lead to a nice communal experience in which players are encouraged to intertwine their choices. The Game of Twenty Questions is intended to be a fun experience that helps the players immerse themselves into the characters.

So just to make sure I understand correctly...Hida Defender starts with Rushing Avalanche style at rank 1, while others have to wait until rank 2 to get?

Sorry, just wrapping my mind around it.

No. Hida Defender starts with Lord Hida's Grip and a choice from among two shyuji at rank 1 (see Starting Techniques). However, since Rushing Avalanche Style is on their Rank 1 curriculum with privileged access (the diamond), a Hida Defender can purchase that technique despite not meeting the requirements, in addition to the XP purchase counting full towards completing rank 1. Most everyone else has to wait until Rank 2 to purchase Rushing Avalanche Style since Rank 2 is a prerequisite for Rushing Avalanche Style.
