How much would I expect to pay?

Recommended Posts

I've considered getting into this game, but I can't afford a huge money sink (40K anyone?)... How much would it really take to build two base armies so that you can play a reasonable sized game?  I don't mean just a starter game, something closer to a full game.  A rough idea is sufficient - not looking for specific army lists.

Assuming full MSRP, probably in the $275-$325 range. Two cores is the best way to start ($180). Veers and Leia and/or Han provide commander options ($26+). You can probably skip the big stuff, but the AT-ST is more serviceable ($50), and I'd definitely recommend another Speeder Bike and AT-RT ($50). I'd also heavily suggest grabbing the Commandos and Scout Troopers ($50).

I mean, the two cores are absolutely the best way to start. There can be arguments for grabbing the Fleet Troopers and Snowtroopers over other things. And if you hunt around, you'll likely find 10-15% off, so you may be able to grab another box or two.

Stasy is pretty much spot on.  Id reccoment atleast a unot of fleets and snows.  Sniper and bombers work best in pairs(camandos and scouts) hard to say if youll want to run trip atrt or trip speeders.  Leia boba and han are some of the best units im the game so far from my experience.

Hmm....

Start with 2 Core Boxes + Leia or Han, + Veers or Boba.

2 Core Boxes, Leia/Han, and Veers/Boba, would go around $230 I believe.

I don't recommend getting the Airspeeder, by the way. It's not very good in game, in my opinion.

PERSONALLY, I went all out. As soon as the game came out I got 3 Core Boxes, 2 AT-STs, and 2 Airspeeders. Then, I got Veers, Leia, 2 Snowtrooper Squads, and 2 Fleet Trooper Squads. Then, just recently, I got Han, Boba, 3 Rebel Commando Squads, and 3 Scout Trooper squads.....

I have pretty much no money for other hobbies. ?

The bare minimum for full sized games would be: 2 starter boxes, Leia plus one unit (I suggest Fleet Troopers) for filling up the rebel side and Veers for filling up Empire. That would be 231$ and you'll get full game experience but with little to no variation of army list. That is fine already, actually the first months of the game were played like this and it was a lot of fun. You could then add units whenever you feel like it (or have money to spare).

The next things I would get after that would be a unit of Snowtroopers and Boba (to switch out Vader because unfortunately he is not the most effective unit in the game) and a unit of Commandos for the rebels to add variety (with a box of commandos you can actually add two units and if you are not super servious about having all the components correct, you can even make 3 squads out of one box)

Thank you all for your input.  Not as bad to get into as 40K it would seem so something I could swing for Christmas

The other option would be to just build a singular army, which would reduce your cost. Chances are anyone you are playing against can bring an army of your own. Unless I suppose you are trying to introduce friends to the game. Even so, I've come up with some smaller list "learning" games that I play with friends, and I do it by splitting my Empire army into two. Saved me a lot not investing in both sides.

For a lot of games, I ended up with 1 army... then no one to play with because they can't afford it, don't want to invest without playing first, etc.  I could do a full sized army for myself with a basic smaller army for someone to try with....  Most of the time in my groups, the one that GMs a game (even a miniature game), ends up providing all of the toys.

You know, you could maybe go to Amazon. you can find great deals there. one time I saw the Core box for only 64$ ,And the T-74  Air speeder for only 17$, Another time I saw the ATST four 39$ And other units for cheaper prices. also the game play is amazing it’s easy to pick up and you definitely got too master The mechanics of the game. I would highly recommend to coreboxes because you get extra dice and extra movement tools an extra range ruler.

Also you get an extra Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. what I did with my Luke Skywalker. Is i Painted him to look like return of the Jedi Luke. Darth Vader haven’t got to yet. I hope you Get the game??

If you are going to do Legion as a “Christmas buy-in”, I’d suggest using the next two months to build some terrain for your games. This can usually be done very inexpensively by using items you have around the house that usually get thrown into the trash or recycling.

I’ve used large plastic tubs from ground hamburger for cargo containers or bunkers. Drink mix canisters for Tatooine-esque buildings. Those old phone charger cords that don’t work any more? Clip off each end to use as accents on your buildings (seriously, they look like little electricity or gas meters on the outside of buildings ?).

You might want to also check with your local public library to see if they have 3D printing services. I just found out mine does free prints for public domain files and while they only print items 3”x3”x3”, I’ve my first door on order for a watchtower I’m building out of a section of a shipping tube and round plastic Chinese take-out containers. ?

 I really like that idea.?

I've had Legion for [checks calendar] five days now and I already have a early buying order slated. I think it should be pretty solid and gives you a little variation in army building, starting with whatever seems to be your favored faction, then switch to the other. I'll bold what I went with.

  1. Core Set (obviously) [I'm omitting a second Core because I don't feel the need to have a second one, even if is pretty efficient to do so]
  2. Snow Troopers/Fleet Troopers (to bump you to the necessary 3 Corps units for standard 800 point game)
  3. Scout Troopers/Rebel Commandos (to round out the bulk of your list and add variation)
  4. General Veers/Leia Organa (these Commanders seem to support troops well and are not terribly expensive to buy or field)

This is where I'm going to halt my buying for a while; I've spent about $65 past the Core Set and Christmas is coming. I also intend to go back through the same order to round out the Rebel side before getting deeper into Imperials. I'll continue alternating as much as I can before Clone Wars era, where I'll just repeat the same cycle. I think I'll be doing this when I get back to buying, though:

  1. More Corps: Storm/Snow Troopers // Rebel/Fleet Troopers (moar Trooper spam)
  2. More Spec Ops: Scout Troopers/Royal Guards // Rebel/Wookie Commandos (Scouts and Rebel Commandos are probably the most efficient Expansion to flesh out a faction since they give you two units per box; the others add some variety)
  3. More Commanders/Operatives: Han Solo/Chewbacca // Boba Fett/Emperor Palpatine (gives you more than just Luke and Vader as a main Commander. Consider even earlier because Han and Boba look like really good replacements for Vader and Luke)
  4. More Support: Speeder Bikes/E-WEB // AT-RT/Laser Cannon Team (moar support; the emplacement guns seem okay. They seem like they should support troopers better than speeders/walkers since their pace is similar and they're a bit more efficient, so better to pair with Trooper spam)
  5. Specialist Personnel (This should pair well with Trooper spam as well. I think I'd bump this up a slot, but doesn't really increase unit count and seems to be lesser Veers/Leia more than a particularly unique unit)
  6. Heavy: AT-ST/Snowspeeder (these will probably be my "final, if ever" purchase since they are expensive to buy and to field. Arsenal does look sweet, but Boba Fett :))

I do have to agree with this. X-Wing is my only other miniatures game, so I am woefully underprepared to handle the sheer amount of stuff I need to make/prepare/paint for Legion. I find some comfort in the barricades that come with the Core and will rely on those for some time, but unit painting and terrain already looks like a really time-intensive task. I'm hoping to have most of my Imperials painted in two weeks and that already means I'm cutting out most other at-home hobbies for that chunk of time to make some headway.
