DS does Legion! IMP OFFICER AND DROIDS 03/26/19

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm incredibly new to painting. I took a free "learn to paint" session at my LGS and found out I absolutely love painting. It was most of the reason I bought into Legion. (Though now that I've played a few games, I've found it's very fun!) Here are some of the things I've painted for Legion (and others).

Firstly, here are my storm troopers 5 squads. I airbrushed a primer coat them brush painted the base white. I washed all the figures completely with nuln oil and then dry brushed white over the panels and raised parts of the armor. (It gave them a worn-in look without making them seem too seasoned) I then did a little bit of detail work on the bits in between armor, guns, and colored their shoulder pads accordingly. I then when over all the armor bits with a gloss varnish and the non armors with a matte. They look quite nice on the field.

I also had a friend do up a very nice "inferno squad" stormtrooper squad.

He also did up a Darth Vader that was quite nice.

Here's one of 2 AT-ST model I painted.

I air brushed a grey primer followed by a darker grey base coat. I gave the whole model a wash in nuln oil then did a second shader coat on high detail areas. From there I dry brushed on a white/grey mix that matched the AT-ST color. Then I added my black detailing using the dry brush to highlight areas of intense movement or heat (like blaster tips or joints). Finally I dry brushed some areas with a metallic silver to give the machine a used look. It still needs a varnish but it's mostly complete.

Thanks for checking out my stuff! Any thoughts or tips are more than welcome!

UPDATE: 1

So I got my scout troopers and I've been working on them all week. The front row is basically done. I have some minor touch ups to add some color to the satchel and landmine, and colored unit markings.

Started with a primer in white. Added a 2 coat white base, and tried detailing the ammo bags, boots and cloth back pieces with an off-white. I highlighted the black under suit, guns, helmet vents and lenses with a matte black, then gave the model a good wash in nuln oil. I lost the off white in the wash, it was too subtle. I dry brushed the armor with white to revive it's color and left the ammo bags and such washed to keep the off-white scheme I originally intended. From there I just touched up some black areas that picked up white from the dry brushing. Finally I mixed a black and white to get a deep charcoal for the gloves, and then varnished the armor in gloss and everything else in matte.

UPDATE 3

Time for another update!

First off, I decided to base all my stuff to look like Crait from TLJ. I know the fans seem to have a love/hate relationship with TLJ, but the location Crait was a really cool idea, both conceptually and visually.

Unfortunately, finding a mat to play on that matched was a little tricky. In the end, I ended up designing  my own!

I ordered 2 from Inked Gaming, and they arrived  yesterday!

The level of detail I worked into these really blows my mind when I see them up close.

This got me excited about getting my basing started. I had purchased 2 or 3 bottles of Agrellan Earth months ago, but I just couldn't get motivated to start... I started with my storm troopers and Veers. My main units. Once the paint dried the cracked earth effect looked wicked cool! (I don't really like Citadel paints, but holy **** their textured stuff is cool).

Once they all dried out I started dry brushing the white onto the cracked earth. I started with Veers (and my favorite stormie unit, which I didn't manage to photograph). I think it has turned out amazing!

The Infernal squad looks nice, but I really like your worn (silver) effects on the AT-ST

Thanks! Yeah, I saw a lot of the weathered AT-STs online but I don't think I saw a single one that had exposed metal... I was like, welp, this is happening. lol

...stop the madness!...you not only have a fire team... but a rifle platoon with heavy weapons section....boy, you have a lot of STOrMIES….nice WERK!...

I know right? lol I run Veers a lot so having plenty of troops to back up my AT-ST is super helpful.

Your stuff looks great man.  I think the  Crait maps look terrific and likewise your base on Veers.

Yeah, the texture paints are easy and cool.  Sure, if you want ten gallons of the stuff you can make it cheaper yourself but I for one am happy to use theirs for the convenience.  And it works great.

any plans for additional Crait terrain?

EDIT: also I can’t see the option for square playmates on Inked Gaming’s site.  Am I just missing it?

Edit 2: nevermind, I found it

Indeed there is. First I'm going to base all my troops, I feel that's more important because terrain can change. But after I have an old hasbro AT AT I'm going to cut up and use as a center piece. I have a couple of little outpost towers that will also be based for Crait, and a 3d printed outpost.  Finally I have a couple old action fleet snow speeders I plan on burying in the "salt" and making wrecks with. I think I may also create some raised terrain so I can make trenches like the movie. (here's all the terrain I plan on modding being used on space mats lol)
