Upcoming releases - time to break the "one of everything" habit?

Recommended Posts

Just tossing this out there for some discussion.  Up to this point, I've purchased at least one of every expansion released for Legion.  Some I've gone as far to pick up a second set.  I usually always preorder thru my FLGS as I get a slight discount and it's always available for me on release day.

I'm now looking at the releases for the rest of the year and I'm just a little hesitant to drop the funds for "one of everything".  I think I'll grab the E-web but the 1.4 FD Laser Cannon is really not doing anything for me.

So if I take this opportunity to pull off the band aid, it makes the decision to pass on some of the future releases easier.  Palpatine does not seem like a viable Commander choice, IMHO.  I'd much rather take Vader if I wanted an expensive commander.  The Royal Guards, as a close combat piece, seem superfluous to me because for close-in combat I think I'd much rather grab Scout Troopers or Snowtroopers with Flamer. The Wookiee Warriors are not my cup of tea either; I'd have been all-in had it been Ewoks.

So, I'm pretty much left with Chewie until the end of the year.  The only issue: all those unpurchased upgrades!!! :(

I dont think its absolutley necessary to have 1 of everything. You may not have as many options building your army, but if you dont see a need then you dont need it. Should you get to the point where you want to get one you can always pick them up later.

Both the 1.4FD and Palp I've heard are doing well on TTS. Perhaps losing multiple games to them will change your mind. It's not hard to be better than Vader. He's the weakest commander in the game by a margin.

Where can we see how the new TTS tournament is doing?

Honestly if I had the option of only buying one side I totally would. Unfortunately the only way I can play right now, due to lack of FLGS support, is begging friends to come over. So I have to have at least 2 armies of stuff otherwise I lose even that.

Solution, get 2 armies of ONE SIDE!

I think I have enough imperial stuff at this point. 2 vaders and veers, 2 AT-STs, 3 Speeder Bikes, 6 storm troopers, 3 snow troopers. So I could probably do an imp v imp game.

I am very much the opposite of the "one of everything" approach. While I do own armies for both sides, I don't have Han, Fleet Troopers, Rebel Commandos, or Leia. But I have 5 squads of snowtroopers. I buy (and play with) the figures I want. I don't buy (or play with) the figures I don't want. It works just fine in any game system.

As a general note on this, if new upgrade cards (or the latest codex, or new Technical Readouts, or whatever) are constantly redefining your games you might want to take a look at your scenery collection.  A bland scenery collection can put game outcomes at the whims of slight optimization tweaks.

I'm on the 'other' boat... where I get at least 2 of everything released. Some things 4-5 of. lol. Because.. it's Star Wars and it's my sci-fi kick (only sci-fi setting I actually highly enjoy). So, for those of you who don't buy everything. Thank you! More for plastic-crack gluttons like myself. :-D

(seriously though.. this game plays very well so far without having to own everything)

I didn’t plan on buying everything from the get go.

My first interest is with the Clone Wars era, but until it comes out, I bought enough to build a rebel and Imperial army with the Endor battle as a theme. So it means that I have no interest in Snowtroopers or Fleet troopers.

Only exception is Boba because well, it’s Boba...

I am super excited for the Scout troopers and Boba. Best looking armor by both of them IMO. I’ll probably end up doing a set of standard white, army cammo like the clones had, and a black unit. I want enough scouts that I can run 3 of them in a list. As far as some of the other stuff not very interested. I buy what I play, only got 1 set of snowies because I wasn’t sold on their abilities and I’m still not. I know when clones and droids come out there’s going to be a lot of money spent lol

I’m with Red Castle on this one- the system interests me enough to want to play with it, but the Clone Wars will draw my interest far more deeply. It just seems more fitting to the massed infantry battles. Imperial Assault (especially campaign mode) seems to fit MY view of the Galactic Civil War a bit better.

That said, I have a core set, and I’m looking at Han, Rebel Commandos and another AT-RT for the Rebels, and another Stormtrooper unit and an AT-ST for the Empire. Maybe Veers to open more Imperial command flexibility.

I don't think Legion asks you to buy everything. Excluding the emplacements, I think I'm done buying trooper units. Personally, I need some more variation beyond "this is a group of dudes that does something different than those other groups of dudes." So I'll get the crew served weapons, and from there I'm likely all set until some more vehicle support makes an appearance. And that's fine, get the flavor you like.

I wouldn't really call Legion "massed infantry battles".  Platoon level skirmish at most.  Legion really seems to be more of a special operations game.

It's all relative. This was the headcount of Star Wars Miniatures Battles by WEG and (Old)hammer 40,000. If 40ish models per side is the biggest game in town, that becomes the definition of "mass battle games". But 40k armies have roughly tripled in headcount since then...

This would be a lot more like a massed infantry game if "grand" or whatever games were common. But people apparently choose to play 800 points only.

If you really want the massed infantry experience, 15mm ancients is the way to go!

Thanks!  I didnt know if they had their own boards or anything, I wanted to know what the word was on units from people actually playing.

The website is actually updated with scores for every group after games are played. No data on lists, but you can track players results (and their factions).

http://www.invaderleague.com/league/season-2

Just click the link on the above page to see the US groups or the EU groups. We also talk regularly in Discord, where there is a lot more listbuilding discussion going on. Link to the Legion Discord is https://discord.gg/9yJPH4

And, as mentioned, TalkPolite (organizer) will likely post stats and results soon - he is compiling now since we have hit the midpoint of the group stage.

there are also games like dropzone commander, flames of war ave other smaller scale games. That is why I think clone wars should be its own 15mm or 10mm game. That way you can have squadrons of walkers and hailfire droids gong head to head.

Non-gamers tend to prefer 25mm (or whatever we've climbed up to now, 873mm or something) and Star Wars is a gateway franchise to get non-gamers in. So I doubt we'll see a 15mm game. I also think 15 or 10mm would be good for the GCW, along the lines of Epic 40k, so we could do actions similar in scope to Hoth in ESB or whatnot. But unlikely anytime soon. Only instance I can recall for SW of anything like that, is that game that used little collectible foldup models sold in card packs. Well that and the WEG boardgames of Hoth and Endor. Avalon Hill style boxed cardboard chit wargames, only, Star Wars.

I'd love to make a whole company of little 20mm by 40mm bases with 3 tauntauns on each of them...

Im not as impressed with the emplacements. The bomber commandos really need 2-3 groups. The 2man teams seem way better though than the big units. So far every thing does about the same thing. Wookiees and royal guards actually look like the first divergence in the game where all the units may not be the same

Honestly, I’m planning on skipping some of the things. I only buy Imperial units for now (I might pick up a CIS faction when we see it). I’m ignoring the eweb for now. I may ignore palp and royal guards. The specialist pack really has my attention though, and I’m hoping to pick up scouts and Boba (as well as go back to priority supplies because I haven’t gotten to it yet)

I am buying one of everything because I like to paint this stuff. But for game play, I usually try one out and wait until I feel like it's a good investment to buy more of them.

That's totally been my experience with Fleet Troops and the Rebel Commandos/Scout Troopers.

Future armies/factions may not get as much love from me. Need to be real about how much money I spend.
