A non Canon child...

Recommended Posts

So... I'm not sure how this is going to go, but I think I should ask.

Can I add stories that slightly impact Cannon characters, for example, make one of the younglings from the Gathering in the Clone Wars a Mentor for my group im FaD or have a pair of characters that never actually were shown to have a child, but give them a child or to literally play as a character from either a TV show, book or movie.

Now obviously I'm not going to touch any of the big-name characters I'm only thinking like asajj Ventress or the Younglings from the Gathering or things like that. For sure nobody that's actually seen in any of the live action movies.

All thoughts, opinions, and most importantly facts welcome. Thanks everybody!!!

Alright cool, I was thinking my character would be the child of asajj Ventress and Quinlan Vos, which brings me to my next question. What would/should he look like, my preference would be a male dathomirian, and due to  her ancestry/genetics, that should be fine right? Also... If that works, should/can I just use the zabrak stats or something else?

the nightbrothers (male dathomirians) are plain and simple zabraks

Probably a pale human with a penchant for funky Quinlan tattoos if he knew his dad. They're both pretty much humans after all.

Well, Qinlan had a girlfriend in the Clone Wars comics from Dark Horse, but it is your star wars and Ventress can have children with whoever you want. It is your star wars game ;).

About the child, he/she will look like as you want him/her to look. It is not wrong to look pale and with qinlan hair, nor is wrong to look dark skinned and bald. Genetics are capricious, and real life is full of examples.

Use the statistics that better match the kind of character you want to represent or that reflecs better the environtment where he/she has lived. Use Zabrak stats if it suits you.

Have fun!

As others have said, do whatever you want, Disney will not send agents to your gaming table because you deviated from canon.  If it works for your story, go with it.

As to how the child would look, I'd probably give them a mix of features.  Possibly the somewhat larger than normal eyes that Asajj had (or at least I seem to recall she had BIG eyes for her small head), but perhaps the other features to match the father.

Or whatever, again, those type details are quite literally superficial in nature, so I personally don't worry about them too much, beyond a general description of appearance.

Thanks again everybody for posting; I've really appreciated what everybody had to say.

So my thought was that he would be this like dark Jedi, Sith Hunter, but with the era and understanding that there aren't  a whole lot of "Sith" to hunt, so I'm kind of at a loss on how to make that work. Further the idea was that he would like go around you hunt/ fight them and if he defeated them he would collect their lightsaber as kind of a trophy (General Grievous style). Side note, my character would already have his initial personal lightsaber.

I think his mindset / motivation would be like he's trying to eradicate Dark Side users and so he goes across the Galaxy hunting them, but after some time he realizes that  he's been tapping into the Darkside himself.         After reading the summary of the dark disciple book, which is where I got the info that says asajj and Quinlan become lovers, I would say that by the end, they both have had a "bad taste" left by the dark side. Because of this they left their child teachings or holocrons that show what the dark side is and how evil it is, and if he is not strong, the dark side will consume him.

For his look, I know for sure i want him to have the male dathomirian horns, but I want to incorporate the extra humans genetics... Just saw the picture of the male zabrak in the FaD core rulebook, that is practically the picture I was painting in my head, but with some yellow tattoos/face paint.

Thanks again everyone,.          Additional replies are still welcome.

Simply put, Canon and Legends are just that. stories somebody else has come up with and set in writing, audio, video and/or other means. You, as both player and Game Master, are in no way obligated to stick to that, if you think your story is going to be (more) interesting, and no Legends-Police will come knocking at your door to stop altering Legends. Also, feel free to include your own take and changes on big names. If you play a Clone Wars type campaign, and in one session Anakin's fighter is totally blown to smithereens, and one of the characters starts courting Padmé Amidala.... Go for it. Have all the fun you can get in this Alternate Universe. Did you say the rebel strike team on Endor failed, was wiped out totally (including Han, Luke, Chewie and the droids), and the group of player characters saves the day instead? Terrific! Your character would be a child from established names in Canon or Legends? Why not? And why limit yourself to 'side' characters? Why not the never-heard-of-before fourth child of Han and Leia?

Having set on Asajj and Quinlan as parents, you can still go in amost any direction. His looks; set! You found an image, imagined a slight variance; ready. You have something you can describe with some, or great, detail. The character 'starts to live' a little. He would be a Sith Hunter. Why not? From Star Wars The Old Republic we know there was a huge Sith Empire. Why wouldn't thousands of them still remain, hidden somewhere in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, ready to be hunted? In your own version of the Star Wars galaxy?

That is one of the most striking qualities of roleplay games, I think. That freedom.

You could have it be something of a "unrealized destiny".  Not an Actual Destiny, as in foretold by the stars or anything, just, "This is what I was raised to do.  I was taught from birth to hunt these evildoers....and the galaxy already got rid of them....so what do I do now?"  kind of thing.  Have his motivation BE his character arc and struggle.  He tries to find some way to find a place in the galaxy, despite his "calling" basically being obsolete at this point.    But then, maybe he then comes across actual Dark siders, and has a chance to do "what he was born to do."  And maybe he likes it too much, gets too much of a thrill in taking them down.  Perhaps so much that he begins to become like them.  And then the question for him will be, whether or not he becomes the very thing he hunted, or will he be able to turn away from that path.

*shrugs*  That's probably what I'd do with that character at least.

Thanks to both of you for the great ideas, definitely going to think them over, and pull inspiration from them.

on a slightly different note if I've learned one thing from this discussion board is that while playing these games Cannon / Legends is relative to what the GM/players decide for the game.

Asajj Ventress wasn't a dathomirian by blood.  The child could he from dathomir, but wouldn't be that species.  Neither of their parents would be.

How about his morality???

I dunno, how about his morality? :P  It's your character, what does he value and care about in regards to personal conviction? (Strength), and what does he care about, to the point of giving up those values and personal conviction? (Weakness)

As an example, you have a character who cherishes life, and will go to extreme lengths of self sacrifice and injury to protect anyone they can.  But they also have a beloved sister, who if she is threatened, they will lie, steal, kill, enslave, etc, to protect her.

I'll give you that I just looked at a couple websites, it is kind of confusing whether she is or is not, but I've always thought/assumed that she was far enough down the genetic "tree" that at some point there was zabrak genetics added to her bloodline.

If you're referring to the fact that she used to be a different species and then with the Clone Wars they tweaked/changed it or something.[Didn't know that till today (if true] I don't know what to tell you, except that i'm still going with the idea that she had at least a little bit of zabrak in her, and when she had a child, that sliver of DNA was one of the key elements in the child's DNA. Plus we all know and understand that the force can work in crazy ways so what if in this instance that little bit of zebrack DNA was either multiplied or really honed in on by the force. Also if you've read some of the previous posts on this feed you'll see that several people and now including myself would say that in this game Cannon or expanded universe stuff can have meaning but doesn't have to, so in this Star Wars Universe She might have had a full-blooded zebrack father; and there would be your genetics if you must have them.

Now in conclusion I'll say thank you again everybody for responding and commenting and sharing your different views and opinions they are  all welcome and very appreciated... Even if I disagree. ?

She has a detailed history of where she came from and eventually got to Dathomir.  And yes if you want to make changes that's cool.  In your game cannon is only cannon when you say so.

Ran a game once where the Emperor was a woman and she seduced Anikan to the darkside the old fashioned way.  And in fact Padme had Leia as a child, but the emperor had Luke.  Leia had to bring her brother Luke to the lightside with the help of the PCs.

Glad we are on the same page; and the changes you made for your game sounds like a lot of fun. May I ask how it went?

Also, where can I find more on her backstory?

Before this goes in a direction I really don't want it to. Let me ask another question; how are red lightsaber crystals created and or found.

I used to assume, and I think that's how I think it used to be, that they were just found like the crystals that the Jedi used, but I think over the last couple years or so they've changed that and now red lightsaber crystals are created from the "bleeding" of a crystal that used to be a Jedi's, but was either stolen or the Jedi himself flipped to the dark side. Is this correct or am I off.

Yes, canonically, red crystals are only created from “bleeding” them, thus creating a Corrupted crystal (found on page 52 of Disciples of Harmony).

Under the old canon (now Legends) lightsaber crystals could be of any color, determined only by the minerals they were made of).

Alright thanks for confirming that for me, then my next question would be that if my character defeated a dark side user and took his lightsaber and used it would it turn back to it's original color or would it remain red.

Also, since I'm on the point of crystals, to clarify when Jedi  initially get their Crystal; the crystal is colorless until it becomes "attuned" (I think this is the word I saw it earlier) to the to the Jedi. which then I assume determines its color which is more commonly than not blue or green with some exceptions. Do I understand this correctly or am I mistaken?
