My best stormtroopers so far

Recommended Posts

My WIP thread was pretty cluttered so I thought I would post this separately.

These guys still aren’t perfect but I put a lot more time and effort into these than my previous stormtroopers.

I started with a light gray Vallejo airbrush primer (equivalent to Corax white).  Then I used nuln oil on the whole model.  Then I used some Vallejo blank ink to do the eyes and some of the Black joints and the eyebrow.  Then I started bringing it back up to white with Vallejo ivory.  I thought it might be a bit more gentle than white and I thought about switching to white for the final highlights but didn’t.  So it looks a bit creamy in some places but I kind of like it.

Anyway, as someone who is just going for table too adequate I’m really happy with how these came out. Still lots of flaws but like I said - I’m happy with how they came out.

Those troopers look really great! Nice job.

Dang these look great. I love the HH12 Trooper, really good shading on the body. Also, the ground technique on the base is good. What product creates that effect?

Looks like Citadel’s Agrellan Earth.

Yeah @KalEl814 is right.  It’s Agrellan Earth but like an idiot I put it straight on top of white primed bases.  So I painted over it, filling in the cracks with Zandri dust.  Then added some Mordor style bushes.  It turned out pretty well I think.

Yeah, still looks like a good effect!

A few more Imperials:

Veers is easier to paint than to photograph.  I chose to do gray rather than olive and he’s basically Batman. Different shades of gray.  All very forgiving of mistakes.  I hand painted satin varnish on the helmet and armor and matte varnish on the cloth and boots.  Not so obvious here but okay in real life.

I used the same basic technique in the biker scouts as my previous stormtroopers.  I’m not sure if it works as well or is as necessary.  The bikes I did the opposite of my previous set by priming them black and painting the brown parts.  I love these models.  Very satisfying to paint and come out looking nice.  For some reason I really prefer a clean, new look for them instead of the beat up look of the films. I’m not feeling super inspired for the bases so I might just leave them.  Maybe I will dry brush a sandy color over the top...

And finally just a cool shot of my imperial forces so far - including a primed but unpainted stormtrooper squad which is the last thing remaining from my core sets.  I randomly noticed the overhead light was dramatic and took a quick pic. Pay no attention to the creepy @ss doll head in the background, lol.

I prefer a grey and black veers over the green olive ones. My Veers, which I have already painted and will upload on my thread eventually (when i stop procrastinating) is a grey tunic with black gloves, just like yours, but also with a bit of blue in the hard parts.

Okay, finally got around to finishing my fourth and final set of stormtroopers from my two core sets.  I didn’t put quite as much TLC into them as the last set so they aren’t as polished.  To make up for it, I stuck them in a pleasant grassy meadow.

I admit, it’s nice to have these done.  I will probably hit the snowtroopers next. I’m so behind...

Got my first set of Snowtroopers done.  Pretty basic tabletop painting.  I primed in a combination of light gray and white (has some trouble with the airbrush but I’ve sorted it out).  Then used seraphim sepia to do the cloth bits. Used army painter dark time for the eyes. Put a few dots of red and blue here and there. The guns are Vallejo German gray. Used white to highlight mostly the shiny armor bits. Brushed on 3-4 layers of satin varnish.

the pictures aren’t great. I will try for some better ones later.

This is unfinished, obviously but I wanted to include a shot of the back and I didn’t take any of the finished ones yet.  I feel like the simple few blue and red elements adds a lot here.  I didn’t have a reference so I don’t know what this is “supposed” to look like.

I have set number two primed and ready to go.  I want to make them differently but I really like the way these cake out so I’m not sure what I will change.

Yes, it’s citadel’s valhalen blizzard on the bases.  I quite like it although it takes like half a bottle to do one set.

Here’s a few more careful staged photos that probably only look better to me.

For the next set I’m going to try painting the cloth in a cream color and the armor in a white. Hopefully it will have enough contrast.

Got the next set of snowtroopers done.  Not really happy.  I thought the cream color was a little too subtle so I added back the sepia wash.  Then tried to highlight it up.  Just overall lots of sloppy painting on these guys.  The bases turned out pretty well though.
