Has anyone tried any heroforge custom miniatures for their characters? I came across the page the other day.

The online character generator looks good, and there's a good selection of oriental weapons and armour to draw on, but I don't know how good the final print-offs of models are.

I have quite a few custom minis from them, a dozen or so. Found them to be quite good and they have excellent customer service. Had a couple damaged in transit and they immediately sent replacements. Price point may be too high for some but customization is quite good and constantly being improved with more options.

Yes, I made a model for my Shinjo scout. 3D rendering was pretty good.

I still haven't ordered it as VAT, custom fees and shipping will make that model very expensive. :(

You can always order the stl, and then have it printed locally.

I was trying a few characters from our party. Most pleased to find stuff like a tetsubo in there as an option as well as just generic katana, which makes armoured crab look much more impressive.

I wouldn't want to do models en masse - they're not cheap - but models for characters and campaign big bads is not unreasonable. A (very short) version of the orcs makes for a decent bakemono standin, and the zombie components in the 'modern' archetypes mixed in allow you to make stuff like half-undead dark moto, and obviously rival samurai and courtiers are easy to do

I'm glad to hear the models look good. Have you tried painting them? Any advice?

Did Heroforge add more options, or is everyone just using varying combinations of the two Asian styled options they've always had?

  • There's still only the one samurai helmet (+/- mempo), but you can add the mempo without the rest of the helm
  • There are a couple of armour chests that are specifically 'samurai',
    • There are quite a few Korean & Chinese armour types as well that (shorn of helmets & shoulder pads) can look right for well-equipped ashigaru-style armour, too. They do provide a few options for unicorn characters who want to add a slightly more mongol touch to their character, too.
  • There's two kimono variations (essentially an actual kimino and the inevitable fantasy setting "look at my cleavage" version) for courtiers
  • There are about three (I think?) robe/monk/ninja outfits you can mix and match for things like togashi monks
  • Katana, Tetsubo, Yari are specifically available, as are a few choices of bow. I'm pretty sure I saw jitte and sai. Wakizashi are avallable but only as a strapped-to-hip item.

Heroforge's samurai options are very limited, and you have get creative with it. Especially considering L5R is a samurai game with lots of variation between the clans. Compared to different games with different archetypes and races.

I designed these figures based on the characters in my beginner box game:

Very nice.

Not bad, Danger Bob, but looks way too Gaijin for my tastes.

There isn't really much chance to mess with facial features; there's about 12 (?) sets of predetermined nose/cheekbone/eyebrow sets. It's probably the weakest bit.
