Suggestion for a final squadron pack

There are still some fan favourite squadrons missing, mostly the U-Wing and Imperial Gunboat. And although there are still tons of legends and canon TIE Variants remaining the Rebels have hardly any squadrons remaining. The only squadrons that were really employed in any wide scale were the U-Wing and the K-Wing (the later by the Legends New Republic, but we have the E-Wing from there too). 

So my suggestion is one final mixed squadron pack containing:

2x U-Wing (irregular squadron, possibly with the Assault Keyword)

2x K-Wing Squadron (regular squadron, counter for its turrets, maybe 3 blue bomber dice?)

2x Star Wing Assault Gunboat (irregular squadron, maybe give it Snipe because of all its missiles?)

2x TIE Punisher Squadron (regular squadron, 2 or 3 bomber dice, imperial B-Wing equivalent)

 

(For those thinking about the TIE Striker, i dont think it has much of a place in Armada, as it was mostly used for athmospheric duty and regarding the Heavy TIE from the Solo Movie, i dont think its different enough to warrant it a place in this game. Both work fine for X-Wing, but struggle to fulfill any meaningful and different role than other fightercraft already in this game. Same goes for the TIE Reaper and Krennics Shuttle, although both are cool)

If they did another CC type box for squads adding uniques for sqaud pack II, I could see Krennic's shuttle being used for/changed to the lambda. But aside from that I agree, doesn't feel like a squad type they'd double down on. 

On a similar note, I'd love to see a tie phantom or tie advanced type squad with swarm.

That could be reasonable, assuming it’s priced right.  It still raises the possible Yavaris damage from 20 to 24, but if it were priced to limit other essentials like escorts I could see it.  25-30 points, maybe.

I think there will  be two squadron packs. One for the rebels and one for the empire. I think a new squadron pack needs to bring balance between both factions and some new keywords. Based on X-Wing and canon I think there will be the following squadron and aces:

Arc-170/ Thane Kyrell. Maybe 10 points with speed 3, 4 hull 3 blue AA and 1 red against ships with bomber. Reflects that it’s a earlier version of the X-Wing. Thane has been piloting one and we already have Ciena. 

Sheathipede-class shuttle/ Ezra Bridger and Phantom II. Ezra is all over X-Wing and he is still missing in Armada and the shuttle is the  most likely candidate to get cloak of the rebel squads. 

U-wing/Cassian Andor and LMTR-20 . Just speculating here but Cassian seems obvious and they could give us a new keyword like “transport” which would extend the range of boarding teams if activated with a squadron command instead of attacking. Both the U-Wing and the Tie Reaper are transports so it seems like a obvious thing. 

Auzituck Gunship. It’s canon and seems like the obvious candidate for a assault squadron. I think raid tokens will become much more useful in the new ssd era and the rebels needs more than Jyn to be able to hand the tokens out.

On the imperial side I think we will see a Tie Reaper with the transport keyword, A Tie Striker with swarm, 5 speed 3 blue and 1 black antisquadron and 1 black die against  ships. I also think that we will se the assault gunboat with maybe 6 hull, 3 blue dice against squadron and one black die against ships. Overall the imperial side needs more squadrons with black dice against ships. And lastly I think we will see the Mandalorian gauntlet fighter again. It’s a cheap way for Ffg to include a squadron they already have developed.

I severely doubt we’ll see squads that let you extend boarding teams on both definition and game interaction reasons.

 

Lets face it, the ONLY defence against BTAvenger is staying outside of close range as long as possible...  A move anywhere Squad is going to... well... make that choice even more no brainer for everyone... 

Secondly, or firstly in my initial reasons, is the fact that “Boarding team” is used as a colloquial term by the community, but actually encompasses a swath of actual upgrades (Boarding Teams, Boarding Engineers, Darth Vader, Cham Syndulla) that, unless somehow defined as an in game rules term, would be further disincentivised away from the regular Boarding Teams...

 

Its just a bad move overall, and opens up more negative play, so, in my opinion, it’s best to just drop the thought entirely...

I think they could pull off two as well:

Rise of the Rebellion Squadron Pack:

U-Wing (squad leader type ship)

Phantom Attack Shuttle (docks with Ghost and can launch anytime)

Sheatipeade Attack Shuttle (grants Jendon like attack to an ally but then that ally can't attack again for the round)

K-Wing (Bomber with counter)

 

Imperial Projects Squadron Pack

Gunboat (Snipe, black dice anti-ship and anti-squadron)

Punisher (two black die, one blue die heavy Bomber)

TIE Droid (super cheap, Swarm, and swarm-like attacks)

TIE Reaper or Striker

U wing should be a cheap rebel gauntlet type ship aka assault mechanic equipped.

K wing, a heavy bomber w/ counter 1. Quite expensive.

The attack shuttles suggestions (Phantom etc) seen misplaced to me. One offs don’t really fit. If anything do the attack shuttles from the  old TIE fighter PC games.

Imperials have much better options as I’ve mentioned loads of times. TIE Avenger, Scimitar bomber & TIE Droid.

If you really want to push imperials add Assault Gunboat as a rogue fighter/light bomber & Missile Boat as a rogue medium bomber. Royal Guard Interceptors to spice ?

That was a cool shuttle but I’m not sure what role it would fulfil with the existing mechanics of the game.

Add new keywords of course then good to go ??

But with two of each ship instead of 1 each.

 

And going by Saw's renegades in X-Wing, you could get a U-Wing in there with Saw Gerrera as the elite.

 

Rebel -

U-Wing - Standard, Saw Gerrera

Fang Fighter - Standard, Fenn Rau

 

Empire - 

Star Viper - Standard, Xizor, Guri

Mist Hunter - Standard, Zuckuss, 4-LOM

Id actually favour the TIE Avenger over the gunboat. Or the TIE Droid - purely because you could have some interesting mechanics associated with it.
