Is anyone concerned about generic officers?

Recommended Posts

with all the interesting units coming out before the officers,  probably we will not have this problem.

Imperial guards, Palpatine, scout, e web, Boba fett.  Plus extra personnel for existing units.

sincerely speaking if someone still goes with trooper's spam, he would be a very sad person....

All of the units you mentioned are troopers...

I think something to remember about the game is that it's always been marketed as a game of infantry combat. I'd be surprised if we ever see competitive lists that don't include a decent number of trooper activations.

Trooper spam yes.  Corps spam (currently the only way to trooper spam) no.

Plus we haven't seen all the generic command cards.  Maybe one requires heavies or vehicles?  Would be pretty dumb to have to include that with nothing that can be given an order with it.

sorry my bad-...in my native Language trooper and corps are synonyms, so Sometimes I make confusion with terms.

I meant corps spam. Trooper's spam is obvious since there is only two vehiclkes per faction up to now, and everything else is trooper.

No. I like cheap commanders as it opens more room for vehicles and such. I feel like trooper spam is only a problem now because so little of the game exists yet.

That makes no sense, if proven that trooper spam in the future is completely broken in terms of activation and achiveing victory through mission objectives that is something they should start adressing and fixing NOW, not in 4 waves to come. Have they learn anything from armada?

Well i like named heroes before generics, but that is a personal preference.

I get My chewbacca and han combo so I'm happy.

I really like that you can add some specialist to normal squads. I really liked that system in rubewars as well. Either a single unit or a less expensive and less powerful unit upgrade

And the fact that their extreme low point cost further promote and enable trooper spam?

Yes. I’m extremely concerned. More options isn’t a good thing if the competitive options become restricted, and generic officers have the potential to severely limit the effectiveness of bringing iconic unique characters to the table. Unless something mitigates activation advantage (which may be impossible... the fundamental win condition of the game is “having more units” with the only variation being when, where, and what type), I’m worried these generics will make it very difficult to justify taking a unique character.

Concerned? Not really. Mildly annoyed at FFG for the whole "Star Wars is about characters, so what better way to include them than by making them Commanders" (paraphrasing here from memory), thing? Yes. I'm interested to see how thing shake out, and if FFG changes the army build rules in such a way that a unique commander or operative is required. I don't really care either way.

Having not been around for the start of any of the wargames I play, I don't know if this is normal, but it almost feels like the Legion we are playing now is a paid open Beta for what Legion will eventually become. More and more it makes sense that the rulebook is digital only.

because history has taught us that war doesn't have named heroes

I can't tell if this is sarcasm? I can name a fair number of decorated veterans of past wars, and many historical figures who are only known for their prowess in battle. Napoleon, Duke Wellington, George Washington, Sitting Bull, Leonidas, Desmond Doss, etc, etc.

Besides, this isn’t a historical war game. It’s freaking Star Wars.

I have no problem giving people options. But if this detracts from Legion as a game of character-driven epic battles I’ll be pretty bummed. And with how cheap these are...

Mildly concerned.  This is Star Wars, named characters should be on every table.  Why would anyone want to play a Star Wars game and not use named characters?  Very confused by why those people would even be interested in Star Wars to begin with.

To your last point, many people play Star Wars RPGs without including the named characters anywhere in their games. I really enjoy the universe itself, not just specific characters in the universe.

A friend and I brainstormed this a while back and the best idea we came up with for implementing generic commanders without creating a unit that overshadows Veers and Leia was to make them command squads in the vein of the Imperial Guard in 40k. Given that the personnel expansions have a decent number of models in them, it's quite possible the generic commanders will be multi-model units with a personnel upgrade to give them some customizability.

Provided the images are accurate, that is not the design direction FFG took. The Generic commanders are cheaper, slimmed down versions of Veers and Leia for 50 points, and no unique command cards. Single model unit, 4 health, 2 Courage.
