My Hoth Imperial army

Recommended Posts

Thanks. It wasn't hard to do, anyone can get two armies painted for Legion fairly quickly. I have no talent: I can't draw straight line with a ruler.

A squad of 7 troops for either army probably took around 45 minutes of actual brush time: 5 minutes painted here, 15 minutes painting there, punctuated by several hours of drying time. I don't think there's more than 12 man-hours per army.

Plus, Darth Vader and an AT-ST paint up to tabletop standard in roughly zero seconds. That gives me 400 points that can move around to pretty much environmental theme. If you paint pretty much any 3 corps you've probably got a legal army. Legion armies just aren't very many models in the grand scheme of gaming. Now, I do have core set stormtroopers & bikes painted in traditional colors. So someday I can add a 3rd corps squad of, say, Imperial Army troops or something, and pop over to Endor without a fuss.

But I don't actually like using Darth or Luke, coming from an 80's & 90's background. So Veers is my goto for Hoth imperials. When Operatives are released I'll paint "Gideon" like all my other rebels and he'll be my rebel commander. My theoretical someday Endor Imperials will of course be led by the eventually released imp. operatives officer.

I think I glued the feet on the wrong sides. I didn't realize there was a right and left foot till I was almost done painting. Oh well.

If it makes you feel any better, I knew there was a right and left foot, referenced a photo from the movies, planned very carefully... and then still managed to get them on the wrong side, lol.  It doesn’t really matter all that much except for your nerd cred.

Having said that, your models and minis look terrific.  I like the ATST.  Sometimes simple is good.  So far I have only primed mine to make it not stand out so much (it has appeared in precisely one game in my basement) and at the rate I’m going I may never get back to it.  I really enjoyed painting the airspeeder but the ATST just has a lot of flat gray surfaces that you have to try to add some interest to...

Tell me about your power generator terrain.  That thing looks fantastic.

The generator is made on a 1/4" plywood base with beveled edges. I just used a sander to do that. The power coils are 8 lids, turned sideways, and cut into "most of a circle". Then arranged as you see them. The word "LEGO" was sanded off the lids... they lids from the container you use to pick your own assortment at The LEGO Store. Then I glued a PVC elbow joint to connect the generator to some underground tubes and wires. Epoxy glue was used to ad 3D snow effects to the generator and spackle was used to add 3D snow to the base. I think I scuffed up the cup lids and elbow joint a bit, and sprayed them black before glueing them to the base with epoxy. Epoxy and/or spackle snow as also used to hide any mistakes I'd made. The generator was painted grey. Then all snow areas were painted blue and drybrushed up to white. That was about it. The hills were similar. A piece of plywood, a piece or 3 of styrofoam, and lots of spackle, white glue, and blue and white paint. The shelters were made just to get more terrain onto the board.

Next for this table I'd like to make some crashed spaceships. Maybe meteor craters or hot springs. I'm also toying with the idea of somehow making enough "wild crystalline growth" to cover the table...

C'mon. Give it a drybrush and paint the base green. It'll look 1000% better than primed and take like 20 minutes. Not even. Then you can file it under "done". One thing I really like about having an AT-ST is, it can move to different theater seamlessly. I can combine it with my core set Imperial units and suddenly have most of an Endor army. So that's good.

Here's my e-webs. Finally got a good day for priming then I eventually remembered to paint them! With the snow bikes I've maxed out that particular force org slot. Next up is another AT-ST, and then the army is about done. Eventually, I might start to miss the simple meditative approach to painting these and add a 6th squad of snowtroopers for the fun of painting. Also, I'll presumably add droids. I don't know if the generic officer and radio operator can be converted into Hoth style using extra Veers models or not.

Nice! I really like those e-webs. I've yet to get mine for my imperials, mostly because I don't play imperials (I have a Rebel force and an Imperial force with 2x - 3x of each unit, and 6x stormtroopers / rebel troopers respectively. They're just painted to tabletop standard cause I don't really give a **** about painting forces for only newer players to use.)

Anyways, I think you could do it using extra Veers models, but i'd be slightly concerned over how you'd make them differ appearance wise when using Veers.

Better than not painting them at all...

I don't find Legion models particularly lend themselves to spending much time on painting. But they're my umpteenth army and wargaming isn't my only hobby.

Fair, I think Legion miniatures can look amazing if there's good quality put into the painting, I'm getting around 30 paints for the custom force i'll be doing using a ton of bits + rebels.
