Literally just brainstorming for ideas here.  Is there any way the Force - or aspects of the Force - could be an Obligation?  (Republic setting, so legality of Force is not relevant).

Not an urgent one - just came up with a vague concept and thought I'd see if anyone fancied helping me flesh it out.

I suppose you could do an Addiction Obligation, where the addiction is constantly using the dark side of the Force, or just overusage of the Force in general, relying on the Force exclusively even when mundane solutions to a problem would be just as if not more effective.

Possibly an Oath to not use the Force for whatever reason, with Obligation triggers being scenarios where a major dilemma would be so easy to solve if the PC just used their foresworn Force abilities...

The Force itself is an Obligation tends to cause issues, as an Obligation by default is something that negatively impacts or otherwise hinders your character.  Generally speaking, the Force as an aspect of the character isn't really much of a hindrance, especially if you're playing in an era where being an open Force user doesn't make you an automatic criminal.

With enough imagination ANYTHING can be an obligation, it does not need to fall into any of the categories in the books those are merely guides to create an interesting back story to your character.

Hmm, this is a good point.  Your Dark Side addiction one is a decent idea - might play with that a bit.  Although maybe "Obsession" might be more appropriate?  (Not that the label matters, particularly - just Obsession feels like it has a more narrative flavour).

Maybe having untrained Force abilities could work as an Obligation?  In the time-honoured fantasy-fiction manner of untrained wizards and witches being unable to control their powers?

For something to be an obligation, it should:

  • be able to put pressure on the character's mental state
  • be able to introduce tangible complications to the plot
  • not be able to be easily resolved

If you can find a way to do all those, congrats - you've got an obligation!

I've been chewing on this idea for a minute, so I'm commenting to follow the thread.

I'm playing a Sensitive Exile in an Edge game, and bolting the F&D Morality system on top of the Obligation system just feels crufty.

My current thoughts are along the lines of the GM presenting moral challenges to Force Sensitives based on the Moral Strengths and Weaknesses from F&D, with their screwups being measured in Obligation to The Force rather than Conflict... with the idea being that these characters feel an abstract accumulation of karmic weight more than other Edge characters.  They would subsequently feel The Force calling them to bring themselves back into balance (pay off that line-item of Obligation) by facing more challenges relating to the same Strength/Weakness...

It's a work in progress, but I'm hoping it can lead to integrating the idea of the moral dimension of Force sensitivity into the existing dynamic of Obligation in Edge.  Feedback is welcome.

Now, how to track your overall Light/Dark status...
