Building the Desert Ruins

The FFG Desert Ruins play mat looks amazing! I'm waiting for it to arrive and I've been looking at the mat while I wait. 

Has anyone thought about building those ruins using the picture on the mat? I'm not sure if I have the skill, but I'm thinking I might give it a try. Then I would just set it on top of the mat in the same spot.

I could be built by hand but is really something that is probably best 3D printed. With that said, the mat itself isn't very popular. I have it, it does look good but is busy for a game mat.

How does the mat work in a battle without any 3D elements on it? Do you still gain any benefits from different terrain pictures on the map? Do you still determine Line of Sight across terrain that looks like it would block it?

It is just a mat, not terrain. You need 3D objects for terrain to determine line of sight and how much cover you can place on it. The image was made in some form of 3D software but that is the extent of the "3Dness". It is a 2D mat. Once terrain is placed on it, they flatten out pretty much.

Definitely a bit busy - almost wish I'd ordered a second desert matt to go with the plain one that I have,  but they're not terrible.  I could see using the terrain on the matt to represent difficult terrain, but it's hard to  use the features for blocking LOS - since they are flat and the LOS rules don't function since you can see full bases etc.  you could probably add broken ties and a platform where the elements are.  We used them with some wh40k terrain, because we haven't got much SW terrain built yet.

That is a nice set up. I am hopping they come out with new mats, with star wars elements like at-at tracks but not so busy. All the other game mats out there are rather bland. This is is too busy. Need a goldilocks mat.

That is awesome!! I knew someone would be working on it, since it looks so cool. I might see if I can pull something like that together using foamcore... I don't think I could afford what that might cost 3D printed!

There's a bunch of companies already doing generic grassy mats in a range of styles, from tundra to lush meadow to sparse tufts to jungle etc. I personally really like the mats from Deepcut Studios, but there's a bunch of companies making them.

I'd rather have AT ST pieces on a base that I can rearrange from game to game to maximise versatility. Also, I'd like my mats to be able to pull double duty in Kings of War, SAGA, 40K, etc.
