Bigger scale 1/48 or smaller 1/72

Hey commanders I was thinking about getting a model tie fighter and turning it into a terrain piece but I’m not sure what scale size would look better. So what does everyone think? A bigger scale or a smaller scale. Price for both are about the same at a local hobby store. 2-3 dollars difference.

And, frankly, most model kits nudge TIE fighters too small for the listed scale anyways, so I'd definitely go with 1:48. 

(In fact, I'd say that the 1:48 TIE Fighter scales about perfectly with the older WotC figures or even IA figures. But shouldn't look too bad next to Legion models... And beats scratch building.)

I think 1/48 is okay for terrain piece. I have popcorn bucket AT-AT terrain, a little small scale wise, but okay for terrain.

For an AT-AT, I'd want one that stands almost three feet tall. I freely admit that the AT-AT on screen changes scale at least five times, but I prefer the larger end of the spectrum.. 

I'm not aware of an affordable kit available in this scale and I am considering the practicality of scratch building one. Since it's basically a collection of flat panels and simple shapes, I think it's an attainable goal...after I get all my other figures painted and easier terrain built of course.

Legion is around 1/47. If you want a TIE fighter, the best match is the Revell Level 3 kit erroneously marked as being 1/65 scale(because Revell, ugh) which is pretty much spot-on.

At that height, just build a leg and then cut it off like people do with Endor’s redwoods.  The rest of the AT AT will just get in the way...

Be aware that in-scale buildings and vehicles can take up a very large portion of your tabletop. Additionally, if you use O-scale (1:48) model railroad buildings - for example - they may seem much too short. Vehicles will have the same problem because the buildings and vehicles are not on bases like your figures. A house's doorway might be the "correct" size for your model, but the model won't fit through because the base gives the model greater height and creates the illusion that the scale is "off.".

A 3'x6' play area represents an area roughly 144'x288' (depending on your choice of scale); that's less than one acre. If you're not familiar, that's about half the size of a soccer pitch or two-thirds the size of an American football field. Imagine plopping a small aircraft down in an area that size and suddenly there's not that much room left for maneuvering your army. ☠️

Yeah, in wargames you often go one scale smaller with terrain, particularly with smaller scales.  So you can use 10mm buildings with 15mm figures.

This was my first idea, actually. I'm still undecided as to which way to go.

Is that a historicals thing? Because I've never once seen anyone deliberately choose smaller-scale terrain in 25 years of scifi/fantasy wargaming.

Oh definitely.  Sorry, meant to say that... it’s more often in the smaller historicals... 20mm and smaller.  Yeah, 40k or Fantasy usually just uses that scale:). I think I was mentioning it because I was thinking he could probably get away with a not-totally-to-scale TIE fighter, which would look visually excellent but leave more table for gaming.  I mean... it’s not like the big city buildings and factories in 40k are actually to scale, when you think about it...
