Alpha's Army (Now with Dooku and Armored Kenobi! Page 6)

I'm about sick of painting Rebel Vets.  Painted up two squads for me, then agreed to do a third for a friend as a commission.  Then I ended up doing another for another friend.  Blah.  On the plus side, I did finally remember to get a picture of all of them.

My units, the Space French, in their 1914 and then 1916 colors:

The first commission, also Space French, but these guys are based off of France's colonial troops (which is why I grouped all the Sullustans into the squad)

And finally, Tauntaun Scout's favorite, good old fashion Hoth troopers.  Oh, how I hated painting these guys.

As soon as I finish up some commission Tuantauns, I'll share a picture of them.

Small update for today, but I'm pleased with out he turned out.  Started out as yet another Death trooper conversion, but I decided to base this one on Appo, Rex's replacement as the commander of the 501st.  Technically, the pauldron should be on the other shoulder to be Appo, so, I guess this guy would be Oppa then?

As a side note, I decided to add a bit of an artistic flair on him.  Since Appo was the Clone Commander in charge of securing the Jedi Temple during Order 66, I added some spare lightsabers from Grievous to the base.  It's the simple, silly things in life I enjoy.

Finally remembered to get pictures of these guys, and then when I do try to post them up, Flickr starts acting stupid.  Hopefully you guys can actually see them.

None of them are mine, as they were all commissions for a friend.  We went with a deserty look for the first group, and the classic Hoth look for the second.  I prefer the desert stuff, though he likes the Hoth version.

I really like what you did with the desert taun taun bases- how did you get that effect?

A very liberal application of Citadel's Agrellan Earth, over a base coat of dark brown Rhinox Hide.

Since my shoretroopers were two weeks late getting to my FLGS (between that and the CW release screw ups, getting hard to justify supporting them over places like MM), I finally was able to finish painting them this week.  Not the best job I've ever done, but then again, I wasn't all that impressed with the sculpt either.  Felt like a step backwards from the quality of the Deathtroopers, Rebel Vets, and Clone Troopers.  Oh well.

Painting these guys was a little bittersweet, as they will likely be my last Imperials for a long, long time.  (unless FFG screws up the CW release anymore than they already have)

These look great.  What colors did you use on your desert/sandy bases for the shore troopers?  I have been trying to get that same color look/process.

Thanks!

Can you tell me your process for the desert Tauntauns and riders?  I'm trying to come up with a high desert scheme.

Not much of a process, to be honest.  I used Vallejo English Uniform as their base color, and went from there with off-white or light tan for gloves, scarves, leggings/puttees, etc.  Occasionally I'll throw a "civilian" colored item (or in the case of the French Colonial troops squad, their actual issued head gear) in for a scarf or something, either red or blue as they stand out.  Depends on what you want to go with.

I think your Shoretroopers look great. They are cleanly executed and all the free hand decoration looks perfect.

I hope you don’t skip the Dewback trooper - I’d love to see what you do with it.

Unfortunately, I likely will be skipping them.  I wasn't particularly excited about them when they were announced, and the delay means that they likely won't be released until after the Clone Wars stuff is out, or at least shortly before.

How can you not be excited about painting a giant space lizard... with a stormtrooper riding it?  This thing had like two seconds of screen time in Episode IV and did more to create a compelling Star Wars universe than many of the named characters, lol.  Oh well to each his own.

I'll be honest, I've never liked Dewbacks.  As a kid, I just kinda accepted them and moved on.  As an adult, they seem out of place with the Empire.  Living mounts work for groups like the Gungans, since that's their shtick, the Rebels, since they're desperate, or random characters like Obi-Wan in Episode III, because it's unique and different.  The Empire, however, doesn't make sense with living mounts.  They're the guys with all the industry, the resources, and they're ready to go in any environment at short notice with equipment that's designed for it.  Dewbacks just stand out from that image.  A speeder, tank, or even a wheeled dune buggy make more sense to me.  To put it another way, Stormtroopers on Dewbacks would be the equivalent of US Infantrymen in Iraq riding camels on their day-to-day patrols.  Not SF, or anything working with local nationals, but your average infantryman is riding a camel instead of in an uparmored Humvee or MRAP.  Just doesn't make sense to me.  I won't hate on anyone that does like them, but I'll pass on them.

Anywho, painting thread and what not:  Painted up a spare set of movement templates and doubled down on the Republic with these.  I think they'll match my gear above quite nicely, though I'm not sure if I'm happy with the gloss, and may hit them with a matte finish instead.

With the Fall semester and graduation behind me, I can start playing again.  Maybe.  Anywho, here are some updated photos of my army.  New additions are an AT-ST, a Scout Trooper Scout/Sniper team, and a Space Maxim, I mean, E-Web Mudtrooper gun team.

Basic idea was that the Imperial Army was pushing through this bombed out village, with a scout team in the lead, and combined arms unit following.

The terrain in those pictures is from Bolt Action, the Ruined Hamlet, and the mat is from Frontline Games.  It's their "Field Base" mat.

Ended up buying some 3D printed Clones to help pad my army for a small, local tournament.  While a little skinny (I guess this is the Track-star squad) they look pretty good in my opinion.  Almost (if not entirely) got the popcorning of the paint under control.

May I ask what you did (if anything) about the popcorning? I'm having a truly terrible time with a can of corax white. These guys look pretty good by the way! I almost prefer the skinnier look to the ffg sculpts.

I actually tried several different things.  I ran my dehumidifier consistently before painting, to counter the humidity where I paint, shock the heck out of the can to really mix it up, held it closer to the minis that I was trying to paint, and gave them all a heavier coat than I had been doing.  I'm not sure which, if any of these helped, or if the Paint gods just decided to smile on me.  Good luck on the Corax White; worse popcorning I've ever had was with a can of that stuff.

I really like your shoretroopers. The minis are great and what finally made me decide its time to mow down filthy rebel scum. You’ve done a really good job. I didn’t see your paint recipe, would you mind giving a rundown? I’m planning on trying out contrast paints over a grey seer undercoat.

PS: Awesome to see some conversions too! Favourite part of the hobby.

After priming, I hit them with a can of Krylon Camofaluge Sand.  After that, I used Vallejo black, Citadel Rhinox Hide for the pants and boots, Citadel Eshin Grey for the kamas and slings, Army Painter Leather Brown for any belts or leather gear, Citadel Evil Sunz Scarlet and Ceramite White for the arm markings, a mix of Army Painter Crystal Blue and Allejo Sky Blue for the squad leader markings, and Game Color/Vallejo Gunmetal for snaps, buttons, or other such highlights.  For most weapons, I used a mix of Army Painter Rough Iron and Vallejo Gunmetal Blue, with a dry brush of Citadel Dry Necron Compound.

Hopefully that helps.
