The new quick build system is perfect for this.  Each pack comes with cards that have a quick build for each of the pilots along with a "Threat" value.  You just choose the threat level of your game, pick out the pilots that you want to fly, and off you go.

To be honest, I am looking forward to the QuickBuild aspect of the new game. Genuinely casual or infrequent players don't have to bother with the app or any points nonsense. They're going to bust out the QB cards from the core or expansions, get their ship models & cards together and they'll be off and playing within 10 minutes.

"Hey, wanna play X-wing?"

1.0:
"uh... Hang on, I have to get all the cards set up" **goes through binders for 30 minutes trying to make a list**

2.0
"Yeah, Threat level 6 sound good?" **pulls the list out and gets the build ready in 5 minutes**

I love building lists; I get 50% of my X-wing enjoyment from that, but QBs are the way forward if we're going to get more players sucked into our addiction.

Seriously! if Reinforce and Bomblet Generator weren't a clue that they were experimenting & knew 1.0's days were numbered, then releasing the Gunboat and silencing all that crowd should have been what tipped us off!!

I'd noticed the balance had been getting awfully wonky of late, and was worried as to the cause.

Testing resources looking in new directions would definitely do it; here's hoping they'd been taking a lot of notes.

Is the game nowadays really more wonky than let's Dengaroo  Triple Scouts or Parattani?

I'd say the meta is more solidified and that although the lists aren't as OP as all that, if you aren't using the half dozen or so Archetypes that are the top of the meta right now you are going to struggle. It really is a testament to Worlds 2018 Winner Simeon Dellapina's  skill that he got to the top like he did using a pair of IG-88s.
