STAR WARS: RESISTANCE Discussion Thread!

Yeah, I liked them too. The look is great, and one can get used to the animation very quickly and enjoy it. It's a better and more cohesive show than Rebels, though there are similarities between Kaz and Ezra, and has a better start than TCW.

Tbh the animation is spectacular, the higher amount of stylization makes it look less 'cheap' than especially early rebels. The only elements I didn't like were the slightly too high jumpiness of the main character and Poes body language. That is very minor things, though. I really was grinning through that entire intro sequence and the station is a wonderful setting. Oh and the 'tavern brawl' I found to be quite charming!

As someone who very much dislikes/hates the ST, Resistance seems fairly fun. It definitely feels like it has stronger episodes than Clone Wars and Rebels' first episodes.

I do have some complaints. The art can at time look a bit too flat, hopefully they will make shadows a little darker to help better define the bodies. Also, not feeling Kaz too much after the first 3 episodes, not sure if I like him more than Ezra during early season 1 but hopefully Kaz will get some development moving forward to not be well stupid. Might just be me, but I also fell that Poe was acted a little off, like he was going for a more subtle performance while Kaz and the other characters we met were more animated in comparison.

On the plus side. The show seems to have a larger budget that Rebels with the various assets on display, looking really forward to seeing the concept art and asset sheets they put out on Starwars.com. The action scenes with flying were pretty darn enjoyable, hope it keeps that up. Liked Kaz's original R2 unit, sort of hope it shows up again or even replaces BB-8 after the events of TFA, though they might stick him with Bucket instead.

Saw the premiere, really enjoyed it. Quite fun. And it is fun seeing so many cool ships, where the show really shines. I am loving that Red Interceptor.

I'm not sure that Resistance has a higher budget. I am fairly sure that the animation style they are using is cheaper than the 3D they use for Rebels. It looks to use the same process that Roosterteeth has been using for RWBY the past few seasons.

thing is it can often be hard to tell "cheap' animation from "heavily stylized" animation. IMO resistance feels like the later. they went with a cell shaded look, rather than try for realism or the kind of "living painting" style rebels and clone wars went for. all three appear to be using the same 3D animation approach, they just have different texture styles.

usually the visual style can't tell you much about the amount of budget they've devoted to the project.. you can get some pretty high quality visuals fairly cheap. the real signs tend to be in terms of the animation/motion of the characters and setting. low budget stuff tends to have a lot of fixed perspective shots, characters that don't move much or which move stiffly, etc. things that cut down the amount of manhours needed to animate a shot and on processing power to render it.

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet (no disney channel on my cable, and can't access the online version) but from the trailers i'd say they've sunk a fairly good amount of money into the project, because the shots are dynamic and the motions of the characters and vehicles a fluid.. a sign they are using good computers and have devoted a fairly good sized and skilled team of animators to it. and usually trailers aren't using the fully refined footage.

But guys, didn’t you get the memo: Star Wars is dead! ?

But seriously, I really liked it. I like that there is no jedi to be seen. The setting is interesting, and ship racing brings good action. It should also help to give some more background to episode 7.

I hope that we’ll get to see a old Han come and visit the station someday.

This. Its good to have people who have to rely on other skills to get by.

Yep! Star Wars is more than Hokey religion and lasersword!

With Resistance and soon Mandalorian, I’m glad that Disney knows that it doesn’t need to have a Jedi to be good Star Wars.

The animation does seem much stronger than it first appeared in the trailers.

The T-85 looks way better when you can see more angles of it. I didn't dislike it before but it does help the look. Seeing the Republic logo is nice. I hope we do see this in XWTMGSE. Yes, the Resistance doesn't have any of these so far in the current lore but so what? At least one Resistance pilot has flown them, and I'm willing to bet any pilot that came from the Republic to the Resistance also has flown them. Surely they could have found one at some point, perhaps after the Republic was destroyed. There had to have been pilots out on just recon or patrol missions or something, right?

If they do release it, I hope Kaz is a pilot because I mostly doubt we'll see the ships from Resistance in the game (though I'd still be happy to see them). Maybe when he's destroyed, he "isn't" but can no longer be assigned maneuvers or take actions and doesn't count for having ships on the table. Can only attack. Maybe that's a bit much and too silly but depending on Initiative it might be fine. (Probably not, though.) Maybe he just doesn't get removed until the end of the round.

Watching the first three episodes has me pretty stoked that this will be a really solid first season. I hope they keep it going. There's still so many characters we haven't met, and the ones we have don't have entirely clear motives in some way. It's pretty great.

Just watched the 1-hour premiere. It does remind me a lot of the beginning of Rebels. I feel like I will have to wait a while, most likely a full season, before this turns into something worthwhile, but there's definitely potential here.

I agree with the criticism of the main character Kaz though. He pulls too much of a 180 in the first episode, introduced as a competent new republic squadron leader, then turned into a bumbling naive teenager as soon as he steps aboard the CR-90. This character is 28 years old btw, supposedly born right after the battle of Jakku. I don't mind the Kaz we got in the 2nd act which is probably going to be a lot more relatable and entertaining for kids, but Ezra was introduced for what he was, a punk kid living on the streets and used to doing things his way and looking out for himself. It feels like with Kaz all of his character development in the show is just to get him back to what he started out as in the first 5 minutes.

The plot and setting of the first episode also felt like something straight out of a Yugioh 5Ds video game, where the PC is a rookie racer dropped into a society stratified by racing skill, and is forced to go on fetch quests to complete their clunker of a racer so they can race against the local mid-level ace the next day.

first, we don't know his age yet, just that he was born sometime after Jakku. physically he looks to be late teen or early 20's.

second, there is nothing indicating he is a squadron leader. he is clearly in charge of the flight of 3 T-85's, but that doesn't mean he's a squadron leader.

second, on the CR-90 he's coming down off stress from nearly being killed, and fanboying hard over being on a ship that helped win the rebellion, meeting Poe, and finding out he just brought intel for Leia. having seen grown men acting much the same way at conventions when they meet their favorite actors, and knowing i've done it myself, i can relate.

further, from his description of his father, the mention of his father having planned Kaz's whole life, and the later reference in Ep2 about how his father didn't want kaz to be a pilot or race, it seems very likely that he's lived a pretty sheltered upbringing. on the platform he is very much out of his element, and combine that inexperience with the wider galaxy with the fact he really doesn't know how to be a spy or a mechanic, and he is going to make a lot of mistakes and behave oddly. i've seen similar things happen in real life, with people making the transition to living on their own at college or having gotten their first job. the less experience they had living on their own, budgeting their time, etc the more stressed they'd get, and the more often they'd mess things up. especially if they were learning a new professional skillset at the same time.

i find it a nice refreshing change from someone being hypercompetent at all times, even in things they've never run into before. you know, like Luke, Wedge, most of the Legends protagonists.

Since you felt a need to tell me how wrong my opinion is, I guess I’ll respond. So you would agree that he has some kind of leadership role within a squadron. Not sure why you had to nitpick then.

I got his age off of wookiepedia, so if you think wookiepedia is wrong, go fix it, because right now it’s your guess against wookiepedias citation that he was born around 5 ABY.

I SPECIFICALLY said I don’t have a problem with Kazs character traits after the initial scene, specifically that’s he’s clumsy, naive, cocky, entitled, cowardly and lazy. That’s OKAY for a main character to be because it means they have lots of room for character growth. New Hope Luke anyone? But those traits become much harder to bear when first they show us just how awesome Kaz has the ability to be. My problem was that the Kaz we see from the CR-90 onward is completely different from the Kaz we are introduced to acting as a competent TEAM leader (is that better?) who is cool under pressure, decisive in his actions to complete his mission and protect his squad mates. Yes they can both theoretically be the same person showing different character traits under different circumstances, but a good storyteller shouldn’t force the audience to try to digest all of that in the first act when we’re still being introduced to a ton of other characters and a brand new setting! My point is just that the huge change between pilot Kaz and fanboy Kaz was too jarring too soon. And yes it was obvious in ep 1 that Kaz dad was going to be used to explain that he lived a life of privilege and probably hasn’t earned a thing in his life without his dads help, that has nothing to do with what I was talking about.

Its not a bad show, I just feel like their main character got off to a rocky start because for some reason Filoni felt the need to make him look like a “cool hero guy” in the first scene and first impressions are important and now I will always compare Kaz to the first time I saw him as a brave decisive leader in the first scene.

Just watched it.  So far so good; I’m giving it a shot.

I hope they do more with Kaz’s dad; having to watch the old man say I only wanted the best for you as Starkiller base blows up the republic core worlds would be horrible.

The literal alien (can’t remember his name) seems like a mouth breathing (if sincere) moron.  So far, not horribly annoyed.

don't have to, because there is no age listed.

https://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kazuda_Xiono

Quote

Biographical information
Born: Sometime after 5 ABY[1]

1.0 1.1 Kazuda Xiono was born some time after the Battle of Jakku, a battle that, according to Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, occurred in the year 5 ABY.

so no age is listed. and "sometime after jakku" covers a HUGE timeframe. all it means is that he wasn't born before 5ABY.

and i think you are reading things into the show that aren't there. during the battle he doesn't come off as "cool under pressure" or "competent team leader".. if he was cool under pressure he wouldn't have been totally panicking, as his dialog shows, and a competent leader wouldn't have been losing a battle when his force is not only flying superior craft but outnumbering the enemy three to one.

and even if he was, just because he's good at flying (and he is consistently shown to be good at flying) doesn't say anything about his personality or capabilities in his personal life, much less in stuff that is out of box for him like spying or being a mechanic in a grey-market underworld.

I was very uninterested and skeptical when I first heard about this series however, the opening sequence got me hooked. I liked the T-85s and have come to accept T65s are gone. I was really excited with Kaz’s astromech. I’ve not liked the Disney astromenchs like chopper. Their vocalization just seemed wrong. This mech goes back to the originals and it captured me. Unfortunately, it didn’t follow him to the resistance.

Kaz seemed very much Disney like. Hope he matures quickly. I’ll be watching episode 2 this weekend when it hits Directv and will give the series a chance.
