ATST question: Hatch?

All pictures show the hatch on the ATST opening to the rear. Hinge at the back.

The model has the hatch opening to the right, hinge at the right.

what is the right hatch configuration?

I have a hot wheels AT-ST that has been on my desk at work for a dozen years. It has a hatch that opens to the right, hinge on right.

MPC's model from 2007 also had it this way. BUT I see many more reference pictures having the back hinge configuration. I case could be made that slight variances in manufacturing had them in both configurations.

The full size set piece had the hatch open back, while at least the large AT-ST miniature had it hinge to the right. I suppose we can assume both versions exist in the Imperial arsenal--from different production runs or manufacturing plants. 

Bear in mind, also, that the FFG AT-ST is definitely the Return of the Jedi version and not the Empire Strikes Back version, which had a smaller head made of different angles all around.
