Availability?

Hasbro has the license of Star Wars boardgames. Imperial Assault is a boardgame. FFG and Hasbros have an agreement (but we don't know the content). Part of it is that FFG cannot sell Imperial Assault online.

The game is well and kicking, a new expansion was just announced.

see for example http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/262738-is-ia-going-to-die/

The game is 4 years old now so most of it is out of stock.

IA has never been available for purchase on the FFG site since it was first released.

Actually, I'm glad people care enough about the game to ask - I guess that's a good sign.

Same here. I mean it's kind of confusing, so it's hard to blame them. The only thing that's strange to me is that do people actually order through FFG? That's not a rhetorical question either. LOL. I just assumed everyone bought their games from a store or distributor. So, personally I'd check their first.

I have a feeling people use the FFG products page to peruse what products/expansions are available for a game before they decide what to buy, and then they notice that it says unavailable.

It's funny to see a 3 year-old post being revived about how to win mission X while every month we see a new post about products not being available on FFG's website!    But it's so true that we can't blame new forum members.  A quick check on the IA product web page is enough to create a doubt about the state of the game.  I, myself, would probably not go over the whole forum to seek for that info in case the game is really in a bad shape.  It's faster just to ask I guess.  As long as it helps having more posts under the IA forum VS Legion ;)

That's what I always think.

There's not even the "Support your FLGS" argument to be had either.  Ordering directly from big companies like FFG is just usually... cumbersome and slow, or at the very least seems to offer little advantage over ordering anywhere else.

I dunno, maybe FFG has some sort of competitive benefits program for loyal customers.

Perhaps we could have a sticky post at the top of our forum entitled something like FAQ: Why is Imperial Assault not available in the FFG shop? That might spare us a lot of these repeat questions and give some fans a little peace of mind?  :)

That, and a "what do I buy next" sticky would be fantastic.

Maybe a sticky on each IA product page that said - “unavailable through FFG - purchase through your local game store!”

Oh wait, that makes too much sense for FFG to clearly communicate something...

I love this company, but can’t stand how bad in general communication is.

Well in this case it's too be expected.  Most legal documents are confidential and are not to be discussed outside the parties (meaning each companies legal teams and senior leadership in this case) directly involved.

The other thing is FFG's level of communication is pretty standard across most businesses.  The idea being that if there is the slightest chance of a change between now and getting the product to the the consumer then don't talk about what might change.  I learned long ago that no matter how much you preface something with "I think/we're looking to/it's possible" or any other qualifier, there is someone out there that will repeat what you say as though it were hard fact.

However a lot of other companies, board game companies in particular, have begun to hold themselves to a different philosophy.  You can afford to do that when everything is documented in writing, especially if a company is using Kickstarter to get funding because there is already an understanding/agreement of uncertainty with the medium.  I don't supposed anybody here is familiar with the Kickstarter campaign for Far Off Games' first release, Xia: Legends of a Drift System.  There was a weekly update around that game even if it was just to say there was nothing to report.  That was Gold Standard communication.
