I would choose Imperial Assault over Legion because
1. Imperial Assault is multiplayer (I don't get 2-player opportunities)
2. can get straight to playing (no assembly required)
3. boardgame with grid is exact (and I don't have space for the 180x90cm² terrain)
4. three games in one (multiplayer campaign, 2-player skirmish, solo with the app - less solo without the app)

I would choose Legion over Imperial Assault because
1. I already have all of Imperial Assault

But only you can decide depending on your local community and group.

Imperial Assault.

It's an honest answer, even though I have never played Legion so obviously I'm biased. For me though, IA has some obvious upsides that Legion doesn't (My Legion downsides, may be upsides for others though):

1) IA comes with two play modes: Campaign and Skirmish. Both of which can be played in a relaxed or competitive way, according to your preferences.

2) No range rulers. Squares for movement is so much better. No fiddliness there and while Line of Sight can sometimes be hard to figure, there is a definite answer.

3) You can scale IA as much or as little as you want, and still have hours of play. The Legion box doesn't (as far as I know) have enough for a tournament worthy list - and also, even if you don't play tournaments, I imagine you'll get tired of the few models in the Core box fast (same is true of IA Skirmish though, but you can have plenty of play-hours with the Core Campaign alone).

4) Apart from the Vader miniature, I find IA minis much more engaging and well sculpted thus far.

5) No need for a huge table, and readymade terrain. You 'can' spice your IA with 3D terrain, but it's not needed.

6) IA Skirmish is just a great great game, hands down.

I have both games. I REALLY like both games. If I had to choose, I'd play Imperial Assault Skirmish only.

It is faster, more accurate (grid), less dependent on luck, needs less space, ... it's overall the better game. And in my experience, tabletop games are more likely to attract trolls than board games. IA skirmish is a gentlemen sport.

Obviously the answers on this IA specific forum are going to be a little biased.

ask on the Legion forum and see what they say.

personally, IA gets my vote because I’d argue you get more for your money.

i posted in the both places to get opinions from both users. even there they say IA is the better option

Legion requires painting/Assembly  plus terrain to work. If you want the battles focused more on the grunts than a group of specific characters then I would go with Legion. The gameplay is pretty fun and engaging.

If comparing to just IA Skirmish I would go with Legion, however you do have campaigns with IA which provides much more content than Legion could outta the box. Be it the 1vs4 or the App, IA campaign is pretty fun to play though you don't want a competitive IA player to be your Imperial commander. You want to try to play thematically and fun unique ways.

IA is a way better packaged deal all in all. But I feel like Legion would be a better casual 1v1 game than IA Skirmish so that is my opinion on the matter.

I've been playing IA for a while.  I like it.  It's not perfect, but it has a lot of good.  I've watched a few videos on Legion being played and it doesn't interest me.  As Albert said, IA is three games in 1.  Legion is a game for people who are big into the hobby aspects and want to do table top wargaming.   Without all the terrain, the maps are going to be boring.  It works perfectly for X-Wing, since they are space battles.  The concept of an empty table with just a few barriers is not going to be exciting enough to play very often.  So that raises Legion's price point.  So I would still choose IA to this day.

I can understand comparison Legion Vs X-Wing because that's basically like asking "do you like ground troops or spaceships?". IA and Legion instead are different things. In my case I like board games and I dislike war games, so any poll on this forum is biased :)

Nice! I wrote an Armada campaign a couple of years ago, but we just didn't have the time to commit to it. but i bloody loved coming up with scenarios and an overarching structure. as well as a rpg upgrade approach to pilot / fighter and ship cards.

I just tracked down my old work: (photobucket links unfortuntely, so locked out, but there are chrome plug-ins that can get around that.)

https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/221139-swa-campaign-1-shadows-of-the-maw-cluster/

I sank some serious time in to it, we did an epic session of 3 mission and it was good fun. (Custom cards, print outs, mechanics, the works! I even made terrain for it).

An early draft pdf is here:https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/applications/core/interface/file/attachment.php?id=1764  (from back when I had it alternating between rebel>empire. I ended up just stringing the rebel missions together. All VERY playtesty and a bit Dm'd by myself. Great fun though.

I'm currently starting some ideas for an IA > Armada campaign for my group. Small /mid scale armada missions, landing / boarding / planet missions for IA etc. All very pipe line, wanna get Heart of the Empire on the go for now

Seen this on both sites and agree with what most say.  I love IA and I love Legion but as the OP is talking just the core box, I think IA is the best option.

As a package its more complete.

Im absolutely loving Legion right now, love all the hobby side too but im extremely please that IA just got lovely news too!!

Here's the cool thing about IA-

You can teach the game and get to playing reasonably within about 15 minutes or so if you play campaign.  As long as one player knows the rules well (generally the Empire player) it's a deceptively easy game to pick up and play.  It's borderline a party game even if you have a small party- it still has a ton of depth (especially as heroes accumulate more abilities and weapons) but it's just that easy to get the gist of it.  Sort of a "few minutes to learn, lifetime to master" kind of situation.

Also, just throwing this out there: IA has a ton of variety and content right now.  We have the majority of the big name movie characters, we're getting most of the main characters from Rebels, we've got some stuff from the comics, and even some prequel-inspired units.  There's so much to pick up and collect.

Legion has the walkers and speeders, but there's no guarantee they'll ever be as diverse as IA.  Heck, if Runewars is any indication, you could probably get IA now and see Legion in the bargain bin in six months.  :P

I think that Legion range will go on to be much bigger than IA personally.

Time will tell.

We'll see.

And to be fair, I do expect Legion to fare bigger than Runewars.  But even will all of the expansions that have been announced for Legion, I'd argue that IA's core set alone has more variety.

Absolutely and I agree IA core set i amazing value and a great all round package.

RE Legion/IA/RW...its no true test of course but Legion already has nearly as many posts on the FFG forum vs RW already.  ITs no trues test as I say but its an indication of interest.

Game value: IA.

Hobby value: Legion.

Total value for money: IA.

I was going to say something along these lines. IA is more suited for someone looking for a game that can be an optional hobby, while Legion is more for someone who wants to get into a model building hobby with an optional game that can be played with them.

if with lobby  u guys mean painting , though i like them painted im not going to paint cause i never did and dont want to waist money on that.  Yeah IA as more to offer but come a few years ago while legion come out this year, and they seem to go hard with Legion in future from what i've seen so far. But yeah IA is a better choice and tbh i'm more into campaign and stuff beside i can go skirmish that's almost the same if not simpler than Legion. Though legion looks cool and will be a nice contester to warhammer and other war games.

Legion requires a ton more assembly than IA, even with infantry figures.

In addition, being a hobby game, I'd say there's arguably more of an expectation of painting (lots of competitive IA players don't even have painted sets).

Plus, there's more of a focus on terrain building in Legion, while the tiles/doors/chits suffice for most people in IA.

That's why people say Legion is more of a "hobby".  IA is pretty much "plug and play", you can essentially begin a campaign right out of the box if you want.  Legion, at the bare minimum, requires quite a bit more care, and it's gameplay is more open-ended (and in my opinion, in this case that just means it lacks direction).
