New player wanting tips

Recommended Posts

So i am very new to IA, and have been trying to figure out what to buy to make a semi decent list, here is what i have come up with so far. i was told obi wan wasnt very good for the current map rotation, but not sure how i might replace him aside from maybe throwing in Davith or jyn and rebel high command... tips or advice would be very helpful, i havent tried this list yet as i dont have everything for it yet.

I think Obi-Wan is actually pretty good in the current rotation once you learn how to use him correctly (he does a boatload of damage). I actually think Jarrod is the weak link here, and could be replaced with Jyn pretty easily. As for command cards, you don't have many traits in common among your troops, but Call the Vanguard for Ko-Tun and Take it Down for Gideon would be some great additions.

I'd agree with @ThatJakeGuy that Obi-Wan is fairly decent right now. One reality with him in the current meta and maps is that you may encounter many opponents who run inexpensive figures (Alliance Smuggler, Jawa Scavenger, Elite Riot Troopers (figure cost = 3)) for objectives. Obi-Wan can often run up late in Round One and "steal" an objective with his Alter Mind ability (figures cost 6 or less within 3 of him can't interact and don't count for control). If you can swing that on Jabba's Palace stashes or Nal Hutta shield generators for 4 points, Obi's made up half his cost. And it sets up your opponent having to either eat through his 12 hp (black die + evade is a great defense pool), coming in to contest it (let's Obi-Wan swing one of the best natural attack pools/surge sets in the game), or losing 4 more points next round.

Obi doesn't have quite that shenanigan on Mos Eisley Alleyways' "stand on a crate" mission, because each crate is only worth 2, although he can pull it off in the middle corridor, depending on what contests it. The problem here is that it may be Vader contesting that middle, whose figure cost is WAY higher than 6. The upside to that is that with Gideon, you can push Obi 2 squares closer, focus him, and reliably do some damage to Vader. It's going to take Vader two attacks to kill Obi-Wan, which are two attacks not going anywhere else, and meanwhile you've denied your opponent 4 usually-reliable points from Vader. That's probably an efficient-enough game from Obi, especially since Into the Force will focus someone else.

The other three missions are the question. Raining Freight on Nal Hutta is probably his worst: as with other melee figures, you want Obi forward, but that allows your opponent to capitalize their crate placement near him, and you're stuck deciding whether to use a mid-cost melee hitter to pick up 2-point crates or not. The Jabba's Palace crate-grabbing mission is probably fine for him: that mission often turns into a straight-up fight, and the map is close enough that Obi-Wan can probably do some good work. Trouble will be finding where in the round to use him: your opponent may well be hanging back getting ready for a big Round Two. The Mos Eisley pick-up and return mission is similar: small enough map that Obi can probably get some swings in, though his limited speed probably prohibits him from getting a crate back himself (which wouldn't be efficient: 7 point figure getting 4 points back over 2 or 3 rounds).

So he's good on Jabba's Palace, decent on Mos Eisley, and has a clear strategy for one Nal Hutta and a big disadvantage on the other Nal Hutta map.

Otherwise, I'd agree that Jyn > Jarrod in almost every rebel build!

Your list as-is only really has one big hitter (Drokatta), with Ko-Tun and Hera both sort of supporting her. Ko-Tun can do moderate damage and use some trooper cards; Hera has a smaller shot. Jarrod (or Jyn) would be reliable moderate damage hitters, but you have to be careful with them because of their low hp. Basically, your list as-is would look for big Drokatta shots, with Drok shooting with a free damage token from Ko-Tun, a surge or damage from Hera, and possibly the extra pierce from J4X-7 (though having the droid near enough to do that means it's going to take splash damage from Shrapnel.) You're looking at a build that could do one big hit per round, splash some damage around, and follow-up with a few clean-up shots. It will probably be a lot of fun to play, but you'll have trouble hanging in there through rounds 2 and 3, especially if Drokatta gets removed.
