transport and storage

I have both the P.A.C.K. 352 and 720.  The Small foam trays are half the size of the Large foam trays, so if you stick to the Small trays you can use them in either case.  I currently use my 352 for my X-Wing stuff and my 720 has other things.

Personally I think the pluck foam is a better investment.  Battlefoam doesn't always make the most efficient use of the space on their trays.  A good example is the Rebel tray with the 2 T-47 cutouts.  There are 2 AT-RT cutouts on the same tray which means that it is a 4" deep tray.  You could store the T-47 vertically on its side in a tray that deep yet they have a horizontal cutout for 2 of them.  Lots of wasted space there.

Battlefoam has an option to customize your trays, so if you don't like their layouts you can design your own.  I've done that with a tray for my Warmachine minis.

Having said that, I picked up a GamesPlus bag (it was on sale, 50% off) and a couple trays for Legion, so I'm using that.

I'm diving head first into the battle foam option. I figure in the long run, it's cheaper to rip off the band-aid now rather than getting a budget option now, and going to battle foam later anyways.

They have an imperial wave one set that I ordered. Lots of extra room for future troopers, and a special spot for the ATST, and speeder bikes. I may have to get the odd extra tray down the road, but I'm not too concerned with that.

Do you have your bag yet?

I'm going to get trays for my packplus... but I'm thinking I need something for storage.

No, it hasn't come yet, but it should be here within the next two weeks.

I've played around with the custom tray creator.  I like the idea of it but still prefer pluck foam as I can only use what I need and save "space" for later instead of having to commit to specific shapes/layouts from the get go.  Just personal preference.

I'll admit that the custom cutouts do look snazzier than pluck foam.

It depends on the tray.  https://us.battlefoam.com/custom-foam-trays/

excited to see how it looks. I'm going to hold off on ordering my foam trays until I see yours. If it's small enough maybe I'll just bring both bags instead of my stack bags.

I have GW, Battlefoam and other 'foam' cases. However now I use rare earth magnets for all of my armies, both metal and plastic.  I went away from Target to Lowes for cases because the green closures may not stay closed, dropped a Bolt Action twice in one day (always take superglue along for quick fixes). I like Targets' earlier clasps but not all of those stay closed either. I just don't trust the new ones. Minor drawback is my current cases don't have handles for carrying them around. Other stores also carry plastic cases so find one you like.

I have also put wood (1" x 2") columns to stack a second level of troops on a board with a metal sheet. NOTE: rare earth magnets doesn't work with aluminum.

While I'm using the GW case with a few modifications to fit the larger bases, my eventual plan is to add magnets to the minis and get some sheets of metal work into an old tool box thing I have which has wheels and was intended for several of the small, modular cases. The plan is to add magnets into the runners for the large central area where the cases would normally fit and have metal plates that fit with the minis on them. It's what I used to use in order to haul around my WotC stuff for Saga Edition games and their minis game.

For other things, I've ordered several of the coin protectors (35mm) for the command tokens as well...

I've assembled all my Legion minis (Core x2, AT-ST, Airspeeder) and to my surprise they all fit in the Plano 732. The walkers and airspeeder fit in the top, I have an organizer each for Imps and Rebels and the tokens sit in a smaller organizer that also comes included. I have not glued the ball joint head of the AT-ST to the "torso," I think I will just drill holes into the center of each piece and install rare earth magnets. Once I begin painting I will have to consider foam inserts, but the case holds everything with some room to grow if nothing too big comes out in the next year.

I was thinking this morning of how I could incorporate my woodworking into Legion and I’ve decided I’m going to make all of my own storage boxes. I’ll probably end up modeling most of it off of what battlefoam is putting out and then lining all my slots with foam. First up is a dice box though.

I'll post a video soon, but I put small rare earth magnets under the bases and now they all megnetize to some sheet metal that I screwed into cheap stackable containers from Target. It is totally worth it to magnetize is them as they will never shuffle around. When I get home I'll post better pictures and magnet sizes.

What size magnets did you use? 3x2mm? Also have you had any issues with troopers in base contact on the battlefield?

I'm thinking of doing something very similar with an old baking tray and container.

I’ve been using 10x1.  As long as you don’t exceed 2mm depth (3mm sticks out and unbalanced the base).

For the magnets does anyone have any recommended places to buy them in the USA? Looking at Amazon but a few results say two different sizes.

K&J Magnetics is legit, and they have about everything.  They even have some dedicated articles about using them for miniatures.

2mm depth and I can do up to 6mm width. I was worried if you place two troopers next to each other they would just snap together. Doesn't seem to be a problem though. The magnets behave themselves.

Yeah I did some 10mm wide and is too much... They can nudge each other when on a slick surface and can snap together when lifting...

Yowza, 10mm?! I normally don't go bigger than 3mm, but even 2mm is enough to hold a model in place during transport, provided you don't go shaking the case around.

I haven't tested, but Crabbok on YouTube has a magnetization video using 6x2mm magnets and either sheets or a metal spray that looked legit.  Ordered 100 magnets from Amazon at $.10 per that should be arriving tomorrow.

Any thin iron based sheet should do.  You'll need good snips to cut it to fit depending on your solution, but your local hardware store will be thrilled to hook you up.

Yeah my problem is I had used some magnetic tape instead of steel sheets to make a carrying solution, so I over magnetized the minis...

Is now a todo project (fighting with painting and terrain building) to freeze and pry them off and get new magnets... ?
