Stasy 2,502 Posted March 30, 2018 Just sharing my work so far. It's nothing special, but I've painted way more things than I've played so far. My Rebel Troops: I ended up painting the rims of the bases in black. It definitely helps. I also used a new can of matte clear coat...it turns out not to be really that matte. I really was impressed with how these guys turned out. My Imperial Troops: My white spray can died on me near the end. So there definitely is some grey-er and splotchy parts. That being said, from arms distance, it does well to make them look dirty. The clear coat decided to be less glossy today, so I hit some of the more exposed parts with some ardcoat to get them glossy. Enjoying the bases sprayed in sand/tan, drybrushed Nurgling Green, then shaded with an Earthshade/Cammoshade mix. 16 ImhotepMagi, Thrindal, Sorastro and 13 others reacted to this

Attackmack 526 Posted March 31, 2018 Looking really nice! Although I would suggest trying to rid the rebel troopers of shine, find a matte coat that is truly matt and give them a coat or two! The stormies can have a bit of shine to them, works well! 1 Stasy reacted to this
Stasy 2,502 Posted April 1, 2018 So I kept going over the weekend. 2nd group of Rebel Troops! Yeah, the lighting wasn't the best, as it's dark and I used my flash. Really love the Copper helmets and the Duros I did this time looks much better. And, maybe even more importantly, the matte clearcoat worked with me this time! I think the next piece is going to be the AT-RT. I need a break from doing 7 units at a clip. 10 ShadowKite, BigBadAndy, Nihm and 7 others reacted to this
Stasy 2,502 Posted April 4, 2018 I got a little time tonight to work, so I painted. Finally working on my AT-RT. Waiting for the magnets to come in tomorrow so I can do the weapons right before I begin to glue it together. Really digging the colors, and I even painted the headlights. I may have to try the chipping effect as well demonstrated on Sorastro's video. 4 Basylle, ninclouse2000, ImhotepMagi and 1 other reacted to this
Stasy 2,502 Posted April 7, 2018 (edited) Now Complete: AT-RT. Really impressed with this one. I magnetized the weapons. Also nearly complete are my speeder bikes. Not as impressed as I want to be, but still respectable. Probably the little bit of excess glue has me bummed, but it should hold tight. And I still need to rim them in black. That and the blob of wash that got left on there. My pregnant wife gave me some grief... So I may need to throttle back my work for a few days. Ultimately I'd like to finish what I have before the baby comes. Or at least enough to play the game once or twice. Force Majeure 4,108 Posted April 8, 2018 I feel you. My wife "asked" me to give up going to the game store for a while... One night a week was too much while she was pregnant. Now that the new baby is here, I have no idea how long until I can resume game nights. I'm not complaining, I understand the needs both wife and child require approaching the due date and immediately afterwards, but I miss my game nights. I love painting and creating scenery, so that tides me over for now. 2 Big Easy and Stasy reacted to this
Stasy 2,502 Posted April 15, 2018 Vader was my first Leader I opted to do. I was nervous, but it turns out, using @Sorastro's guide, minus the OSL bits, turned out fantastic. I need to let my base dry (did that separate) but here is Vader complete with varnishes. The only part I'm not thrilled about is the lightsaber. Man that layering is a tough thing to nail down, especially when you're working with a limited selection of reds and oranges. I took one shot with a flash to show the red lenses I added: 8 ImhotepMagi, Admiral Deathrain, Force Majeure and 5 others reacted to this

Stasy 2,502 Posted April 30, 2018 Got my 3rd set of Rebel troops done. Enjoying the "urban" cammo set. Also really digging my work with the Duros (worked with blue and grey vs blue green on the other two). Inadvertantly, my Z6 trooper looks like Scruffy from Futarama. 2 1 EyeSeven, ImhotepMagi and Force Majeure reacted to this
Stasy 2,502 Posted June 18, 2018 So, it's been a while. But I've kept busy...ish. Wanted to share my 2nd set of Speeder Bikes. Now with some basing! I also painted my Leia: I know I did other stuff, I just don't have any pictures! I'll have to shoot the fleet troopers once I finish the Snowtroopers! 4 stainsbury, BigBadAndy, Fort Defender and 1 other reacted to this

I am strongly encouraged to attend by my wife, who wants to maintain a network of friends with kids. The wives of these gamers all get along pretty well so outside of game night there's picnics and stuff with the kids and the same people. Maybe you can find other parents in your area and get something like that going. Man that layering is a tough thing to nail down, especially when you're working with a limited selection of reds and oranges. They all look good. Don't stress out about lightsabers. On the tabletop simple coats of color with a bit of highlighting look fine on them. And sometimes simple lightsabers look better than overly ambitious ones! I tell people not to worry about making the character reflect "glow" from the sabers. Those kinds of lighting effects are great for dioramas. But wargames aren't unmoving like dioramas. Light sources such as saber-glow aren't all that visible outdoors during the day, where most of the battles take place, and, this is maybe more important, the look of a glowing object such as a lightsaber, or the reflected light from such a glowing object, change a LOT depending on the angle of the viewer. In wargames the angle of view changes all the time, so even good looking paintjobs that use those kind of special effects can end up looking weird during games. There's a lot of tutorials out there for people who do want to do that, but, there's also a lot of good reasons not to if you aren't feeling up to it. Your lightsaber paintjob looks good to me. BigBadAndy 640 Posted July 6, 2018 @Stasy I really like your snowtroopers. Especially the shiny helmets and shoulder pads. Sometimes adding a gloss coat makes things look sticky or costed but yours look great. Any tips on how to accomplish that? @TauntaunScout You are right about the difference between tabletop and showpiece painting. I am new to the hobby, having started painting Imperial Assault in January and added Legion st release. I love the availability of tutorials, guides etc but the truth is I am painting the miniatures for my own relaxation and so they look okay when I play the game. It’s great if I can get a good picture to share on here and elsewhere but most of us aren’t trying to recreate movie special effects with miniatures. So do whatever you have fun with. I have an OSL Vader that is pretty mediocre overall but if you photograph it in the right conditions looks really cool. But it’s not especially attractive on the table. So I would encourage people not to agonize. 1 Stasy reacted to this

I'm using Vallejo's gloss Varnish as a last step (after using my matte sealant). Usually straight out of the bottle and just enough to 'wet' the surface I'm trying to gloss. Not sure if there is more that I'm doing unintentionally to get that finish. I actually was on the fence about doing it to the snowtroopers. I didn't think it'd look great with the grime of the wash. 1 BigBadAndy reacted to this
