Prediction for "Wave 2"

As the setting right now is GCW, I would guess the next place they would go is Rebels, as they already have in other games set in the GCW era. They can get the Rebels, Empire, and even "Scum" armies fully fleshed out from those sources.

Force Awakens does not have the depth of infantry for this game, either in the films or new canon EU. In my opinion, barring some surprise massive land battles in episode IX, the next era would be Clone wars for two new armies.

Agreed - if they ever do breach the GCW era, it’ll be on the prequel side rather than sequel. Nothing exciting going on in Ep7-8 for land battles yet

Don't think that that will stop them from going with sequel era...  Disney really seems to favor their new property rather than the old (I do too personally but that is neither here nor there).

I fully expect to see first order and resistance troopers with rey, poe, kylo ren and phasma.  Throw in ski speeders, first order walkers, guavian death gangers and kanjiklub thugs and you could have a decent spread of units.

That's a LOT of holes in the Force Org, unless they treat them like they do in X-wing with the Resistance part of the Rebel Army and First Order part of Empire. I think that for Legion many people would react negatively to that sort of crossover though. At some point they really should include other armies, so Scum, Republic army, and Confederation of Independent Systems would give them a total of five different fully fleshed out armies.

Bothans.

That depends on if the Story group art department has designed official art for them yet or not. They were removed from the 2017 German printing of Age of Rebellion, and this tweet was eventually sent out about it:

Given Leia/Fleet troops has a later release date (Q2 not Q1) I'm wondering if that's already not just "wave 2", or if just Legion will have such an starting inventory they need to stagger out that "Waves" might not be the appropriate terminology.

Shame about the Bothan things, I was hoping for Bothan Infiltrators with pocket flamethrowers. Guess I have to hope for Wookie Commandos with Time Bombs instead.

Since the minimum is 3 Corps units, I won't be surprised if a third block of those is released so players can field one a unique unit each shortly after launch. I really want to see Special Forces though. Scout Troopers for sure, hopefully Rebel SpecForce/Commandos for the other. Real shocked they won't be available at launch.

From the "Orders from High Command" Article on December 1, 2017

One assumption that I'm starting to develop is that Corps, Special Forces, and Commander units will all be Troopers (the keyword this game uses for models on foot), while Support and Heavy units will all be Vehicles.  They way Matt Holland talks about the various unit slots in the Beasts of War interview really suggests that the Support and Heavy categories are just for vehicles (though perhaps one could hear it as everything in those slots so far is a vehicle).

The logos for the slots are also interesting to me.  The Heavy logo is a Support logo with wings added, just as the Special Forces logo is a Corps logo with wings added (and the Commander logo is the Corps logo with wings and an extra decoration).  I feel like the triangle will denote Troopers and the notched hexagon will denote vehicles, and the wings denote bigger, better, or enhanced versions.

If we're REALLY lucky, Bothans are slated to be in one of the upcoming movies so there will be an official art direction for Bothans created (Han Solo maybe?)

I would rather get something to fill the currently empty Special Forces slots personally. Corps units don't necessarily need tons of options in my opinion, they are supposed to be the rank and file, so some duplication would seem normal.

I didn't think of that, but good point. However, I could see "fixed" weapons like E-web blasters as support units, or I suppose a Specialist unit attachment with the same keyword as the rocket launcher.

Much like Runewars, I don't think they are going to use the term "wave" with this game.  With X-Wing, Armada, and Imperial Assault, a "wave" has been a whole bunch of new content released at once, happening about twice a year.  The interviews make it sound like this game will be more like Runewars in that it will have consistent, steady, small releases.  If new expansions are really released one or two at a time, every month or two, I think calling them "waves" will get silly pretty quickly.  When I talk about Wave 7 in X-Wing, it means a specific set of ships, but to a lot of us, it also means the state of the meta from when Wave 7 came out until Wave 8 came out.  If releases in this game are smaller, quicker, and individually have less impact on the meta, we might be at "Wave 9" by GenCon 2019 and that might not really mean much in the grand scheme of things.

I think that's why FFG stopped referring to the Runewars releases as waves, and I expect the same will be true for Legion.

Well, the only thing I'm fairly sure of is that additional vehicles are quite a ways off, 'cause, really, what else is there left that's military and small enough? AT-DP, Imperial Troop Transport and SC-2M repulsor tank for Imperials? BARC speeder bike, Rebel Troop Carrier and some other sort of tank for Rebels?

Don't forget iconic enough. I expect we will see the TX-225 Occupier tank for Imperials rather than the SC-2M, as the Occupier is central to a scene in Rogue One, while the 2-M only shows up in a couple of video games. As for the BARC, I think a Rebel version of the 74-Z is slightly more likely in my opinion, partially as it is seen in Rebel usage in RotJ (admittedly immediately following stealing it from the Scout troopers, but still), and all they really need to do is sculpt new riders and print slightly modified cards.

If we're hoping/expecting Dewback Troopers, here's something I feel like people aren't talking much about, Rebel Tauntaun Riders. A pair of them could easily be similar to the Speeder Bike troops, with only Comms and maybe an Equipment upgrade, and presumably climbing abilities like an AT-RT.

Don't forget the freerunner!  It's Canon now.

Totally forgot about the TX-225. Not iconic to me, but yes, for the general public it'd be a better choice; fine by me. However, I want the BARC to get as much love as the AT-RT, dammit!

It is? Huh, it is indeed; look at that. Would definitely be a great choice for the third Rebel slot in my above list.

People, people, people... we have Imperial Options for ground forces leaders from Rebels.

Thrawn
Governor Pryce

I do like the idea of Inferno Squad as Spec Ops.

And Gar Saxon!!!

He should definitely come in a "wave" with the Supercommandos.

Even if we don't get Scum/Neturals as their own force (or even a force which can be used with either army), I do hope their assistance of the Rebels means we can get some generic Mando minis in, that'll be good for the painting anyway. Plus then you can re-enact Mando civil war, especially if the game adds RTT (K79-S80) and AT-DPs.
