Best Beginner list

Recommended Posts

My 7 year old son would like to come to a tournament with me soon.

He's been to a Kessel run type event (good fun) and has played 100/6 with me at home. He's ok with the basics but doesnt understand the nuances etc.

With that in mind i'm trying to think up a upgrade-light fun to fly list, all i can come up with is a Chewbacca falcon (no face up damage for me) and possibly Leebo (pick and choose) these kind of cancel out any Kylo based lists but still be fun to fly.

So, Help me xwing community! i do have most ships up to the recent waves (i have some Wookies) and can generally probably borrow most upgrades needed (he's a fan of the Rebels TV show if that helps so likes Ghost, X Wings, Tie Defenders etc)

Well, if he likes "Rebels", let him play Kanan/Fenn/Ezra with maul crew? :P

no sheathipede yet :( i really want one though! I have a tasty list that can get someone multiple actions in a turn using it, bit much for my boy though lol.

so far I've come up with this

JACOB 1

100 points

PILOTS

Chewbacca [Push the Limit, "Zeb" Orrelios, Nien Nunb, Millennium Falcon (Evade Version), Engine Upgrade] (52)

Lothal Rebel [Fire-Control System, Dorsal Turret, Plasma Torpedoes, Hera Syndulla, Engine Upgrade] (48)

Quite heavy on the upgrades but large ships, turrets and shenanigans.

Just push that damage through

and there is always the tough and resilient Triple Crack Defenders. Doesnt get much easier. One Glaive could be substituted for Procket Inquisitor, VI QD, or Vader if he wants an ace.

Countess Ryad (34)
Crack Shot (1)
Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
TIE/x7 (-2)

Glaive Squadron Pilot (34)

When I try to design lists for beginners I have one goal: simplify decisions. I try and design strong ships with simple action decisions. That keeps it from getting confusing. I also try and design lists that hit hard. Even when losing it can be satisfying to push damage through.

Something like this would fit that:

Wedge Antilles (29)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Flight-Assist Astromech (1)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Chewbacca (42)
Expertise (4)
Gunner (5)
Hotshot Co-pilot (4)
Millennium Falcon (1)

"Zeb" Orrelios (TIE Fighter) (13)

Total: 100

Wedge with FAA is easy to fly: if no arc, barrel roll or boost. And wedge can wreck low agility ships. I like this chewie with expertise/gunner/hotshot co-pilot because it strips tokens on a first shot and then can push damage through on second shots. And for actions just take evades to stay alive. And Zeb is in there for his love of rebels.

Haven't thought this through but Navigator RAC and Flippy Tie Defenders are always a good bet for new players!

Rear Admiral Chiraneau — VT-49 Decimator 46
Veteran Instincts 1
Rebel Captive 3
Intelligence Agent 1
Navigator 3
Engine Upgrade 4
Ship Total: 58

Rexler Brath — TIE Defender 37
Veteran Instincts 1
Ion Cannon 3
TIE/D 0
Ship Total: 41

What about this? Honestly, it's my favorite list I've ever built, and I desperately want to fly it competitively. I adore it:

Rookie Pilot x 2

Flight Assist Astromech

Integrated Astromech

Blue Squadron Pilot x 2

Advanced Sensors

Linked Battery

4 Ships. Lots of red dice. Respectable HP, and the Xs have respectable agility. The Xs have simple choices - you probably want to focus unless you are very confident you will be out of arc, FAA helps maneuver. The Bs ALWAYS have a reroll, and can VERY reliably get their focus or Barrel Role as needed.

Unfortunately i dont have the sheathepiede or gunboat (i know, HERETIC) but that does look like good fun to fly, might have to prpxy the cards and see if its worth getting.
