[TLJ] Porgs are the best...

Recommended Posts

...of the blatant toybait species in all of Star Wars. Why? They don't look awkward like Gungans and aren't anywhere near as obnoxious with the humor. They aren't as creepy as Ewoks, even though those look a bit more grounded in the universe. Most importantly, though:

They play no role of any significance in the story whatsoever.

No constant obnoxiousness, no storybending to accomodate them in ridiculous ways - no porgs toppeling over an evil empire here! If this is how we sell cute toys in star wars now, I am quite fine with it.

Porgs were the least objectionable part of The Last Jedi for me.

Plus they look really, really tasty.

Porgs are fine. They were put in originally to because of all the puffins on the island. It was easier to digitally alter the puffins to porgs, than remove them completely. It was a creative solution. I have many criticism of the Last Jedi, Porgs aren't one of them.

I too was happy when I read about this! I went back and watched TFA - sure enough, that island is swarming with puffins! I wonder if they'll do a "Lucas update"-type thing to go back and make those all be porgs?

Which is all perfectly fine and good, but...

...but what about the Porgs on the Falcon?  Do the sets at Pinewood Studios feature an overabundance of avian life as well?

Deep fried crispy Porg wings, liberally spattered with Frank's Red Hot sauce... celery and carrot sticks plus blue cheese dip on the side.

Ugh.  Porg wings are FAR too much work for too little meat.

I'll take Porg drumsticks, please.  (Also, could I get mine Teriyaki?)

When they realized how popular their digital puffin replacements were getting in the staff, they saw a potential for greater use, and added the practical effects bits with the falcon getting infested.

So yeah they are kinda a gimmick to sell toys in the end, but at least they are a harmless one that doesn't really effect the film much beyond adding some minor humor at points. Much better than Ewoks, JarJar, and pitdroids..

edit: i think part of the reason the Porgs worked out so well is because unlike Lucas, Disney has done the 'cute animal sidekick' thing since basically day one of doing major films. they have a lot of experience in how to put them in films in ways that don't cause the viewers to hate the character.

I think Chewbacca also helped quite a bit by not really bonding with them overmuch.  Viewers who like the Porgs can laugh at Chewie, while viewers who dislike them can sympathize with his irritation.
