Tanukifest 2018: Rise From the Ashes, May 18-20

Recommended Posts

Bayushi Jinn-Ja here once again to announce the continuation of Tanukifest.

What is Tanukifest?
From 2011-2013 it was a weekend of l5r events that took place in the greater Philadelphia area. Mostly official, these events combined Winter Court AEG events with 7th Dimension (store in Jenkintown) Level 10/15/20 events. In 2014-2015 we did Tanukifest: Reloaded as a single Doomtown event and 2016-2017 as the unofficial BigDeck and Modern World Championship to keep the spirit of l5r alive before the relaunch. In the last two years we've had artists Drew Baker, Charles Urbach, and Bryon Mutt Wackwitz in attendance.  It was moved to the spring so we can combine it with my favorite beer festival (Yards Real Ale Invitational). Mainly it's a celebratory weekend of flipping cardboard and general comradeship. Our region is proud to continue this tradition that has included Atlantic City and Phoenixville Koteis.

In 2017, Mark Armitage continued his winning streak with the Dark Path of Shadow, and seeks to reign another year as unofficial BigDeck World Champion. Jasper Magnus, representing Dragon, was our unofficial Modern World Championship (Chris Medico won the previous year with Mantis). We are continuing these events, as well as welcoming everyone for our first year Legend of the Five Rings by Fantasy Flight Games (new5r). David Campos will also be presenting a format for testing for old5r.

We've extended invites to new artists and those that have previously been in attendance. We have a vast collection of previous l5r cards, including unreleased promos that were intended for Onyx Edition, that will all be out and available for those that desire them.

Cover charge for facility entry from 9am to Midnight on May 19 is $20. All tournaments and side events are free. Full schedule is pending.

Prize support will include custom Keeper/Seeker cards for all attendees, custom tanuki honor/dishonor tokens for pre-reg (to davidrlapp@gmail.com), tanuki mats and dials for cuts, top of clan dice bags, special trophies, etc. Stay tuned!

Proxies are allowed for old l5r events, no limit, but not for new5r.

Information on Modern can be found at http://l5rmodern.roku-mart.com
Information for BigDeck can be found at http://shirobigdeck.com/

This year we will continue with the event being held at:
Delta Community Support: 2210 Mt. Carmel Avenue, Glenside, PA 19038

We will have one of the events (BigDeck/Modern) the evening of May 18 (full schedule pending). Pending social gathering on May 20. new5r will be in the early afternoon on May 19, with one of the other events being early morning at 9am.

Hotels Nearby (more to follow):
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Fort Washington, 432 Pennsylvania Ave, Fort Washington, PA 19034

It's something more than alt art of Light/Medium Infantry/Cavalry, Doom of the Dark Lord and Shadow of the Dark God and stuff from last promo-pack in koku order

I can't quite understand what you're trying to say in that last sentence, dude - could you clarify, please?

There're some promo cards that were physically printed but not released officialy before game was sold (meant to be 2015 OP Q3 and Q4 support) - Doom of the Dark Lord, Shadow of the Dark God and Light/Medium Infantry and Light/Medium Cavalry with alternate art. I wonder if ther're other we don't know and they're just "unreleased promos" prizes David is writing about in first post.

Gotcha. I'm pretty sure it's the cards you mention there (they were also given out last year), along with the correctly printed foil Spider Stronghold.

Ah, this Side B Fear 3 -> Fear 4 fix. I'm missing this one.

I'll take a look if there's anything additional to the promos listed above.

The format Campos worked on was initially a cube but later turned into a format that uses set legality of a combination of cards from all old l5r using four strongholds from every clan. We toyed with the idea of making this format one of the Tanukifest events, but decided it will be a side activity to test it throughout the weekend.

Interesting. It's something i could test with my online buddies as standard Legacy is a bit overwhelming for many to even start deckbuilding.

Indeed! Just waiting on the art to come in.

A couple more updates

-Honor/Dishonor tokens are currently being worked on. They will be similar to the World's Day 2 tokens, but with a Tanuki.

-I will be applying for the Elemental Champion kit for this event. If approved and it starts later than May 19, the Tanuki Crew will host a separate event for it.

Starting pre-reg process. Event is being capped at 54 players (I do not expect that many, just making sure that is known). You can PayPal $20 to davidrlapp@gmail.com (friend/family option).

The Yards Real Ale Invitational date was cancelled and is being moved to the Fall. We will host a separate event in the Fall. We will either do something in the city on Sunday or continue to flip cardboard. I was just informed of this and brainstorming how to adjust the event for it.

For anyone still on the fence about this, I strongly urge you to give TanukiFest a try. It's a wonderful social event as there are few better hosts than Dave Lapp, and the two Legacy formats are magnificently crazy. I resisted playing BigDeck for a long time, but the work that Tony Calderon and his group have done refining the rule set has been stunning, and I've enjoyed it every time I've played it. Modern is also incredibly entertaining, and perhaps a little less chaotic, but both are so much more than just nostalgia - they're vibrant, diverse formats. I'm sure that there will be plenty of spare decks knocking around for anyone who wants to give them a try but hasn't been able to build something yet (in fact, why isn't there a prize for the highest finishing Cameron deck?), so even if you're mainly planning on playing the L5R LCG, it really is worth seeing what these formats have to offer.

Hope everyone has a great time this year!
